Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Defeating Brock

Combusken used the recoil from striking Graveler to perform an aerial flip, landing outside the lingering smoke while staying on high alert.

Soon, the smoke cleared, revealing Graveler's spiraling eyes completely knocked out.

"Graveler is unable to battle! The challenger, Silas, wins!" The referee immediately raised his flag, announcing the result.

Brock retrieved Graveler into its Poké Ball with a wry smile.

"An excellent Combusken extremely fast, incredibly strong, and with powerful fire-type moves. Its Fighting-type attacks are seamlessly chained together, making it highly effective against Graveler."

Brock reflected on the battle. At first, he had thought Silas' command for Combusken to keep up with Graveler was absurd.

After all, once Graveler gained momentum with Rollout, most Pokémon would struggle to match its speed, especially after using Rock Polish.

However, Brock had been taught from a young age never to underestimate a trainer's strategy his opponent wasn't foolish. They wouldn't give a pointless command.

If Combusken could keep up, then Graveler wouldn't be able to evade. Rather than attempting to dodge, Brock chose to counter with Endure and strike back.

Unfortunately,Combusken's speed was absurd. Graveler didn't even get the chance to execute its move before being sent flying by a Low Kick.

What followed was a relentless assault, leaving Graveler no chance to fight back.

As these thoughts ran through Brock's mind, he wasted no time in sending out his second Pokémon.

"Would the challenger like to switch Pokémon?" the referee asked Silas.

Silas shook his head, indicating he would continue with Combusken. The referee then signaled for Brock to send out his next Pokémon.

"My second Pokémon is this one go, Dugtrio!" Brock declared, throwing his Poké Ball.

"Dugtrio, huh? Heat Wave, give it a warm welcome," Silas commanded, seizing the opportunity to weaken the opponent.

"Duuug~" Dugtrio had barely settled into battle stance when it was struck head-on by a scorching wave of heat, letting out a pained cry.

Silas assessed the situation.

"It's stronger than Graveler, but not by much. Looks like I won't need Pidgeot for this."

He wasn't surprised Gym Leaders generally used Pokémon with a strength level comparable to their challengers.

Graveler had been around level 29. This Dugtrio was likely about level 35, roughly equal to Silas' two Pokémon.

But in terms of potential, neither of Brock's Pokémon could compare to Combusken.

That was why this battle was so one-sided. If a normal trainer had challenged the Gym, they wouldn't have had such an easy time.

"Besides,Combusken is only getting stronger," Silas smirked.

Brock had no idea what Silas was thinking at that moment he was simply in awe of Combusken's performance.

"Dugtrio, Dig! Approach from underground!" Brock commanded.

Dugtrio quickly burrowed underground, vanishing from sight.

"Keep moving at high speed and stay alert for any signs from below," Silas instructed. Without a move likeEarthquake,Combusken currently had no direct counter to Dig.

However, dragging out the battle wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Brock frowned at Combusken's movements. What was the point of aimlessly running around? Dugtrio had the advantage, waiting in ambush.

Combusken's strategy seemed like a waste of stamina. If this dragged on too long, it might even be considered a loss due to lack of battle intent.

But after watching for a while, Brock realized something was off.

"Why is Combusken getting faster? It's moving with even more force…force its stamina shouldn't be draining this quickly.

Could it be the Speed Boost ability?!"

Brock immediately recognized the danger. While running in circles could normally be seen as a stalling tactic, a Pokémon with Speed Boost was different it wouldn't be considered avoiding battle.

Unless it hit its speed limit, the referee wouldn't intervene. Meanwhile, Dugtrio could actually be penalized for failing to attack.

"Use Sand Tomb!" Brock ordered, attempting to slow Combusken down.

But it was too late. With both Speed Boost and Agility stacking together, Combusken's speed had already far surpassed Dugtrio's reaction time.

One moment,Combusken's feet were being pulled into a swirling pit of sand.

The next, it had already broken free and dashed to safety, suffering only minor damage.

Dugtrio had no way of restraining the already accelerated Combusken.

"Tch." Brock clicked his tongue in frustration. His chances of winning had suddenly plummeted.

He had underestimated the lack of information. But recognizing an opponent's abilities was a key skill for any trainer he simply hadn't done a good enough job.

Besides, a Gym battle wasn't just about winning. The real purpose was to evaluate a trainer's strength and teamwork with their Pokémon.

Silas had already met Pewter Gym's standards for earning a badge.

But Brock wasn't going to give up so easily.

Gritting his teeth, Brock gave his next command. "Dugtrio, Sucker Punch, then follow up with Tri Attack!"

"Use Counter, then stop it with consecutive Fire Punches," Silas ordered. He was in control of the battle and intended to end it quickly.

Dugtrio's silhouette blurred as it rushed forward at extreme speed, landing a Sucker Punch squarely on Combusken.

Combusken endured the hit and retaliated with Counter, slamming Dugtrio with double the force.

Dugtrio staggered but attempted to use Tri Attack. However, Blaziken's Counter had disrupted its movement.

Despite the pain, Dugtrio forced itself to launch Tri Attack, trying to restrict Combusken's movement.

But Combusken effortlessly sidestepped, moving at a speed beyond Dugtrio's perception. In an instant,Combusken had appeared behind Dugtrio, completely evading its attack.

Flames ignited around Combusken's fists as it unleashed a flurry of Fire Punches on Dugtrio's exposed body above the ground.

"Duuuug!" Dugtrio let out a pained cry.

"Don't give up, Dugtrio! Use Reversal!" Brock shouted.

Dugtrio, summoning the last of its strength, charged toward Combusken with Reversal.

But Combusken, maintaining its composure, simply relied on its superior speed to dodge from afar, skillfully avoiding Dugtrio's desperate attack.

"Duuuug…" Dugtrio struggled to land a hit, but its efforts were futile. Soon, its energy was completely drained, its eyes spiraled, and it collapsed onto the battlefield.

"Dugtrio is unable to battle! The challenger, Silas, wins!" The referee immediately raised his flag, declaring the result.

Brock sighed as he recalled Dugtrio into its Poké Ball.

From the moment he realized Combusken's Speed Boost ability, Brock knew his chances of winning were slim.

But for the battle to end so quickly still left him a bit dissatisfied.

Silas, in turn, recalled Combusken as well.

The two trainers walked to the edge of the battlefield and shook hands.

"Congratulations on your victory. The Pewter Badge will be available for you at the Gym's front desk. Once your information is recorded, you can claim it with your Trainer ID."

Brock smiled as he congratulated Silas.

Losing wasn't exactly enjoyable, but as a Gym Leader, he was used to wins and losses.

Besides, Silas was an exceptionally strong trainer losing to him wasn't surprising at all.

"I should get to know him better," Brock thought to himself.
