Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: The Black Market Exchange & Another Meeting with Brock

Anyone would be as happy as Silas if they had such a fortunate encounter during their morning training. It was like finding money on the street.

And what if the Pichu he caught evolved due to being raised?

Well, in this world, there was an item called an Everstone. It wasn't particularly useful in battle, but its main function was to prevent Pokémon from evolving.

For pet-like Pokémon such as Pichu, owners typically gave them an Everstone to ensure they remained in their cute, unevolved form.

The problem was that Everstones, despite being relatively simple in function, were not common and were quite expensive.

On top of that, Pichu had the habit of accidentally discharging electricity when excited. Without proper training from a professional breeder, it could end up shocking itself. While it wouldn't be painful, it would certainly be embarrassing.

All of these factors meant that raising a Pichu was an extremely costly hobby.

But what did that have to do with Silas?

All he cared about was that the Pichu he had just caught could bring him a solid 5 million in earnings.

"What a great day for an ordinary citizen, truly a joyful occasion~"

Humming a cheerful tune, Silas made his way toward the outskirts of Pewter City.

He arrived at a small wooden cabin on the city's outskirts. From his bag, he took out a mask and put it on to conceal his identity.

Following a specific pattern, he tapped the ground rhythmically with his foot.

A moment later, a hidden trapdoor opened in the floor, revealing a dark passage below. Without hesitation, Silas stepped inside.

The underground tunnel was narrow, with only a faint glow from above providing enough light to see the way forward.

After walking for a while, the passage suddenly widened into a spacious underground hall.

The hall had about ten small, enclosed rooms arranged neatly in the center, and several dark passageways surrounded the area just like the one Silas had emerged from.

A masked figure dressed in black approached him silently and gestured for him to enter one of the small rooms.

Silas pushed open the door and found yet another masked person, also dressed in black, sitting at a table.

"Is this some kind of nesting doll situation?" Silas thought to himself but kept his expression cold and unreadable.

Without a word, he placed the Poké Ball containing the Pichu on the table.

The masked figure released the Pichu to inspect it.

The tiny Pokémon looked around, confused. Before it could react, the figure swiftly returned it to its Poké Ball.

"4.8 million."

The masked figure's voice was odd, almost distorted like an electronic signal.

Silas didn't mind. He nodded in agreement.

It was slightly below the 5-million price he had in mind, but that was expected. Selling directly to a black market dealer would always fetch a lower price than selling it personally to a collector.

Seeing Silas agree, the masked figure pulled out an unregistered card, made a few quick transactions, and handed it over.

Silas checked his wristwatch to confirm the transfer: 4.8 million received.

Without another word, he turned and left.

As he stepped out of the room, another black-clad figure possibly the same one from before, possibly not gestured for him to follow.

Silas walked behind them through another dark passageway, eventually emerging into a different wooden cabin.

Taking off his mask, he stepped outside and immediately noticed that he was in a completely different location from where he had entered.

"Damn, everyone here is dressed in black and masked. This black market is really something. But I have to admit, this semi-randomized exit system is pretty smart."

Yes, the place he had just visited was a black market exchange point.

Each region had only one official black market, but these exchange points were scattered across multiple cities. Some cities even had several of them.

In simple terms, people could sell their goods at these local exchange points rather than traveling all the way to the main black market.

However, the prices offered here were lower than what one could get by selling directly in the main black market of Viridian City.

The key advantage was convenience. Traveling and setting up sales took time, which not everyone could afford.

However, if you wanted to buy Pokémon or Pokémon Eggs, you were out of luck—exchange points only accepted goods, they didn't sell them.

As for concerns about bumping into others and exposing one's identity, the black market had its own security measures in place. While Silas didn't know exactly how they managed it, the fact that the system had survived for so long meant it was effective.

After returning to the Pokémon Center, Silas handed over the Poké Balls containing Combusken and Pidgeot to Nurse Joy for healing.

Meanwhile, he headed to the Restaurant for breakfast his stomach was growling after his morning training session.

He had barely taken a few bites when, just like last night, a hand landed on his shoulder.

Silas paused for a moment before turning his head.

As expected, Brock stood there, holding a sandwich and a carton of milk.

"Good morning, Silas!" Brock greeted him cheerfully before casually sitting across from him.

Silas stared at him, completely speechless.

You're the heir to the Pewter Gym, yet you come to the Pokémon Center for breakfast every day?

Do you live here or something? What kind of joke is this?

Brock, however, acted as if he didn't notice Silas' expression and started eating his sandwich naturally.

For a moment, the table fell into an awkward silence.

Neither of them knew how to start the conversation.

Finally, Brock broke the tension. "I came to see you today for something important."

Silas gestured for him to continue.

"I told you yesterday that I'm the future heir of the Pewter Gym. Yesterday was also my first time assisting with Gym Battle evaluations."

Brock paused for a moment, then looked at Silas seriously.

"After our conversation last night, I thought you were incredibly talented. So I spoke to my father about you and submitted an evaluation report."

Silas smirked. "Oh? And what exactly did your report say about me?"

Seeing that Silas wasn't annoyed, Brock felt a little more at ease.

In this world, it was common for wealthy families to invest in talented trainers from ordinary backgrounds. Many trainers were more than happy to accept such support.

After all, without financial backing, even the most gifted trainers would struggle to grow strong. Of course, in return, they would eventually have to repay the favor or offer assistance when needed.

But for those who became powerful, such obligations were nothing more than a fair exchange of benefits.

There was no situation where one side gave without getting anything in return everything was balanced.

However, there were still plenty of trainers who refused investment.

Some believed they could succeed on their own.

Some didn't want to owe anyone favors.

Others feared losing their freedom.

Although Brock didn't think Silas was one of those people after all, from their conversation yesterday, Silas clearly had a realistic understanding of his own abilities and future there was always a possibility.

His report had clearly stated that Silas had already accepted an initial investment from the Joy family.

But that didn't necessarily mean he would accept an investment from Pewter Gym as well.

That was why Brock had been slightly nervous before bringing up the topic.

This was his first time personally scouting and recommending a trainer for investment, and his father had entrusted him with this responsibility.

But seeing Silas' calm reaction, Brock finally breathed a sigh of relief.

At the very least, Silas wasn't rejecting him outright.

This meant that as a representative of Pewter Gym, Brock still had a chance to discuss the matter with him.

Organizing his thoughts, Brock prepared to continue explaining the details of the offer.
