I felt his eyes on me before I even turned. That stare-unreadable, heavy, something more than just curiosity. Something forbidden.
"You're staring again," I murmured, not looking up from my book.
A long silence. Then, a chuckle. Low, familiar, dangerously warm. "You noticed."
Of course, I did. I always did.
I closed the book, finally meeting his gaze. His dark eyes flickered with something unreadable-anger, jealousy, something in between. But it wasn't about me. It was about him.
"You don't have to be like this, you know," I said softly.
He exhaled sharply. "Like what?"
"Like you're losing something you never had."
A muscle ticked in his jaw. His fingers curled into fists, knuckles whitening. For a second, he looked like he had something to say, something that could break us or fix us, but then-
"Never mind," he muttered, standing up.
And just like that, he walked away.
I should've let him go. I should've ignored the way my heart clenched. But instead, I whispered the one thing that would ruin us both.
"Come back."
And he did.
