"This horny phoenix really can't shake his old habits," Ning Tian muttered under his breath, shaking his head in disdain. Without wasting a single word, he summoned his Azure Bamboo CloudSwarm Sword into his right hand. Before Ma Hongjun could even unleash his flames, Ning Tian flicked his wrist, sending the blade upward in a swift, graceful arc.
The sword's light flashed brilliantly, cutting through the air like a streak of lightning.
"So fast!" Tang San, Xiao Wu, and Zhu Zhuqing gasped in unison. They'd witnessed Ning Tian's sword qi before, but its sheer speed still left them dumbfounded.
Ma Hongjun wasn't Dai Mubai—he didn't boast the same high soul power or defensive skills like the White Tiger Barrier or White Tiger Vajra Transformation. Before he could even process what was happening, a sharp, searing pain erupted in his chest. "Agh!" he screamed, his body hurling backward through the air. He flailed helplessly, tumbling several times before crashing to the ground like a lifeless mutt.
Nearby, Ma Hongjun's girlfriend, Cui Hua, saw him get flung back and rushed to his side in a panic. His flames flickered out as he clutched his battered chest. With her support, he staggered to his feet, groaning.
"Are you okay?" Cui Hua asked, her voice trembling with worry.
Ma Hongjun didn't respond. His wide, terrified eyes locked onto Ning Tian. 'Is he really a human?!'
"Hongjun, please, just go back. Stop fighting," Cui Hua begged, tugging at his arm.
Ma Hongjun winced, the wound on his chest burning as blood oozed out. "No… if you want to leave, go by yourself." He wasn't about to swallow such a humiliating defeat without a fight.
"What's going on with you two?" Xiao Wu asked, her brow furrowing in confusion. Earlier, it looked like Ma Hongjun was harassing Cui Hua, but now she seemed genuinely concerned for him.
With a sharp zing, Ning Tian twirled his Azure Bamboo CloudSwarm Sword, executing a flashy sword flourish before slinging it over his shoulder. He answered for Cui Hua, "What else? They're probably a couple having a spat, and you all misunderstood. Still, this fatty got some nerve, attacking without a second thought. He's lucky he didn't get himself killed."
Cui Hua nodded quickly. "This little brother's right. Hongjun is a good guy, but we're not right for each other, so I wanted to break up. Please, don't fight anymore."
Ma Hongjun snapped, "Stay out of it." Despite his harsh words, he made no move to strike again. He wasn't an idiot—outnumbered and outclassed, especially by this sword-wielding maniac. If Ning Tian hadn't pulled his strike, he'd be cleaved in half by now. If he wanted payback, he'd need Dai Mubai.
"Hey, Fatty, Ning Tian, what are you all up to?" Dai Mubai strolled over, sporting a crisp new white outfit, his hair combed neatly into place.
He'd been scouring the academy grounds for Zhu Zhuqing.
"Boss Dai, you're finally here!" Ma Hongjun lunged toward him like a drowning man grasping for a rope, but Dai Mubai swiftly stepped aside.
"Get off, don't ruin my new clothes," Dai Mubai said, eyeing the wound on Ma Hongjun's chest. He didn't need to ask who'd done it. Glancing at Zhu Zhuqing standing near Ning Tian, he added, "There's gotta be some misunderstanding here. They're new Shrek students, just like us."
"They're Shrek students too?" Ma Hongjun blinked, finally catching on.
Dai Mubai nodded.
In an instant, Ma Hongjun's scowl melted into a fawning grin. "No wonder you're so strong! Fellow Shrek students, huh? Nice to meet you, Ning Tian! I'm Ma Hongjun, Martial Soul Evil Fire Phoenix, level 28 Assault System Battle Soul Master. From now on, we're all brothers!"
The others stared, speechless. This guy flipped attitudes faster than a pancake—one minute he was ready to fight, the next minute calling them family.
Dai Mubai stepped forward to clear things up. It turned out Ma Hongjun and Cui Hua were indeed a couple, but his martial soul's influence cranked his… 'urges' to a level Cui Hua couldn't handle.
She wanted out but he wouldn't let her go. In the end, though, CuI Hua took off anyway.
Soon after, the six of them– Ning Tian, Tang San, Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, Dai Mubai, and Ma Hongjun headed back to Shrek Academy, making way for the cafeteria.
The vibe was tense. Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing stuck close to Ning Tian—Zhu Zhuqing quietly reserved, Xiao Wu practically buzzing with energy, as if scared someone might snatch him away.
Dai Mubai, Tang San, and Ma Hongjun, meanwhile, felt like outsiders. Tang San and Dai Mubai's faces grew darker by the minute.
Watching Tang San glance at Xiao Wu and Dai Mubai fixate on Zhu Zhuqing, Ma Hongjun thought, 'Looks like they've both picked their targets. Ning Tian's gonna be a tough rival, though.'
The so-called cafeteria was just a few villagers Shrek hired to whip up basic meals, nothing fancy. When the six arrived, Ning Rongrong was already there, playing the sweet, obedient girl. She flashed smiles at Ning Tian, Xiao Wu, and Zhu Zhuqing but ignored Tang San entirely, dismissing him as an ugly weakling.
Oscar hadn't shown up yet, but since the five newcomers already knew him from the day before, Dai Mubai didn't bother waiting. After dishing out the food, he introduced Ning Tian and the others to Ma Hongjun, rattling off their names and martial souls.
"With you five, the academy's got eight students now," Dai Mubai said. "From here on out, we're all brothers and sisters. I'm older than you all, so Oscar and Fatty call me Boss Dai. You can just call me Mubai. Oscar's Little Ao, and this guy's Fatty. Ning Tian, Tang San—I've heard Xiao Wu call you Little Six and Little Black. Mind if I do the same?"
"Call me Ning Tian," Ning Tian replied.. He wasn't here to play chummy games with them.
