Chapter 7 - The System

Sitting in his room, Nagata pushed aside tonight's mistakes and focused on the system he hadn't even paid attention to for the past ten years.

"System, explain to me your abilities,"

[Very Well]

[Funtions: Stats: Displays the host's strength and abilities in a rating system that is simple to understand/ Missions: Missions are given to help the host get stronger at an improved rate/ Upgrade points: Used to upgrade the host, other people and items to benefit the host]

"That seems easy enough to understand. Show me my current stats,"

"Hmm...I don't know what I was expecting for a ten-year-old body, and I should have guessed the points scale up every upgrade. But what is that upgrade skill..."

Satisfied for now, Nagata closed the stats and went to the missions tab to see if he had gained any new missions.

[Missions]

[Main Mission: Protect your family from the outbreak: ???]

Seeing three new missions on his screen, Nagata was surprised, but after reading them, he could not help but help, especially the first one.

"Thanks to my memories of the future, I'm already about to finish the first mission,"

Deciding to save his upgrade points for now, Nagata closed his system and went to sleep.

...

Waking up the next day, Nagata got ready for the day and went down to the dining room. Nagata saw his family already eating. Seeing the normally cheery mode gone, Nagata quietly sat down.

Looking at Saya, he saw that her eyes were still slightly red and that she had bags under her eyes. Feeling him staring, Saya looked up at Nagata before looking away and eating her food.

"Nagata, when you finish, get dressed. We will be going somewhere today,"

"Yes, Father," Nagata replied, thinking back to the important person he would be meeting today.

After finishing his food in silence, Nagata returned to his room and changed into more presentable clothing.

He found his father waiting for him downstairs, with his mother standing next to him.

"Father, I'm ready to go," Nagata said, walking to the door.

"Good, I will see you later, Yuriko," Souichiro said

"Yes, you both be careful," Yuriko said, hugging Souichiro and then kissing Nagata on the forehead.

"Bye, mother," Nagata said as they left the house.

Making their way to the car, Nagata and his father sat inside. As the car drove off, Souichiro was the first to speak.

"The person you had me look for. Do you know their situation?"

"Yes, I was able to assume what it would be like," Nagata replied

"...Then why are you looking for them?"

"I need them. They are someone I can't let loose," Nagata replied

"Very well," Souichiro said, ending the conversation.

After another hour of driving in silence, the car stopped near the outskirts of the city in an area that could be considered the slums.

Stepping out of the car, they were immediately hit with the smell of rot and trash. Surrounding them were run-down homes and streets filled with drug addicts, prostitutes, and gang members.

"To think it would be so bad...How could they let our country become like this," Souichiro spoke, clenching his fist.

"I know... it's terrible for people to live in conditions like this. That's why I know you will be able to change it for the better," Nagata replied with a small smile.

As they stood there, they received glances from the residents, but none of them acted due to the armed guards in nearby cars. A few minutes later, a man in a trench coat and hat walked up to them.

"Hey Boss...I have found the boy," the man spoke.

"Good, take us to him,"

Following behind the man in the trench coat, they walked for five minutes before arriving at a half-broken apartment.

"The kid is in there. From what I gathered, he is the only person who ever goes into that building. Well, except for an old lady who will drop off a little bit of food to him," the man explained.

"I see. Thank you. Your payment is on the way,"

"Thank you, Boss," the man said with a wide grin before walking away,"

"Will you be okay?" Souichiro asked

"Yes, Father, I will be fine," Nagata said before walking inside alone.

Walking inside the building, Nagata made his way to the only intact room. Opening the door, Nagata walked into the room. What he saw caused him to halt his movements and his breath to get caught.

Before him was a small boy who was so thin and weak that it looked like his bones would break if he tried to walk. He had extremely pale skin, platinum white hair, and a scar over his right eye, which was blind. Covering the boy's body were scars and bruises that had not healed. The only thing that covered his body was a blanket.

Taking a second, he regained his composure and walked up to the boy.

(I know my last life wasn't the best,t but the saying it could also be worse rings true now more than ever) Nagata looking at the boy

"W-who are you?" the boy asked, lying on his bed in a weak voice that seemed to be struggling with speaking.

"Hello, Anderson...I am Nagata. I am here to help you,"

"...W....Why?" the boy asked

"Because you are a special boy. A child that could have a bright future," Nagata replied

"...You lie...I'm only here to die," the boy replied

"That is not true. You have a purpose, Anderson, and your life is not meant to be thrown away!" Nagata said, holding the weak hand of Anderson

"I-I have no reason to live...My parents said I should not live anymore," Anderson said, his hand slightly trembling.

"Then forget them. Do you wish to live?" Nagata asked

"...I-I"

Hearing Nagata's question, Anderson did not know what to say. As such a young boy, he was told that he should have never been here, that he served no purpose, and that he should have died at birth.

"Look at me, Anderson, forget what those adults told you. Answer with your heart and your heart alone. Do you wish to live?" Nagata said, causing Anderson to break out of his daze and answer without thinking

"Y-yes...I...I wish to live; I don't want to die," Anderson replied as tears began running down his face.

"Good then live, Anderson, Live, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I want you to live for me," Nagata said with a grin.

"I can't...my body is too weak; I can't do anything," Anderson said, his hand barely able to grab Nagata's hand.

"That doesn't matter. All I need you to do is live for me, and I will give you the strength to live for me and yourself. Do you want that, Anderson? Do you want the strength to live?" Nagata replied

"Yes, I want the strength to live," Aderson replied, a new flame of determination being lit in his heart.t

"Good," Nagata grinned.

Holding his hand out, Nagata received a notification from the system.
