Chapter 55 - Something More Important to Investigate

Mo Xiuchen cast a cool glance at Qin Mu and asked in return, "Where were you just now? Why did you let Cheng Jia deliver the documents?"

Qin Mu curled his lips into a playful smile, pulled out a chair, and sat down in front of the desk. Feigning mystery, he said, "I was handling something very important."

Seeing the disbelief in Mo Xiuchen's eyes, he shrugged and confessed, "Actually, Cheng Jia said that delivering documents is too trivial for an assistant like me and that it should be handled by a junior assistant like her. So, I gave her the opportunity to train."

His explanation earned him a cold glare from Mo Xiuchen, who said indifferently, "She told me you were busy, so she brought the documents instead. You take her to the lunch meeting, and before returning to work in the afternoon, report to Wen Pharmaceuticals."

"What? Why?"

Qin Mu looked at him in astonishment. The lunch meeting was supposed to be Mo Xiuchen's responsibility, yet now he was handing it off to his assistant and a junior assistant.

He stared at Mo Xiuchen's cold, unreadable face for a while before realization dawned. "Wait… you agreed to let Cheng Jia attend the lunch meeting, didn't you?"

Just then, the computer chimed with an email notification. Mo Xiuchen opened the message, and his expression immediately turned icy.

Seeing the sudden change in his demeanor, Qin Mu asked with concern, "What happened?"

Mo Xiuchen's sharp features hardened as he spoke in a low, frigid voice, "Ah Feng just sent word—the two of them have escaped."

"Didn't you already take every precaution?"

Qin Mu's face also darkened. Mo Xiuchen had spent an entire week in H City personally tracking down the people who had tampered with the pharmaceuticals. How could such crucial witnesses have escaped?

Before Qin Mu could say more, Mo Xiuchen's frosty expression twisted into a mocking smirk. He let out a cold chuckle. "I let them escape on purpose."

Qin Mu exhaled in relief and scolded, "You should say things clearly from the start! That was terrifying—I thought all your efforts had gone to waste. So, have you found out who's behind it?"

As he spoke, he got up, leaned over the desk, and tilted his head to glance at the email.

"Let them enjoy their freedom for now. I have something more important to investigate."

A dangerous glint flashed in Mo Xiuchen's deep eyes as he spoke with certainty.

"I see."

Qin Mu nodded in understanding. He had known Mo Xiuchen for years and understood exactly what he was doing.

This was all part of Mo Xiuchen's calculated strategy—to push Xiao Wenqing into revealing her true colors. And eventually, to obtain the evidence proving that years ago, she had hired men to abduct him, intending to kill him.

At the thought of this, Qin Mu couldn't help but ask, "If, in the course of your investigation, it turns out that Cheng Jia really is the girl who saved you all those years ago, what will you do?"

After all, if it weren't for that little girl's help back then, Mo Xiuchen wouldn't just have been injured—he might have been permanently crippled.

Before Mo Xiuchen married Wen Ran, both Qin Mu and Gu Kai had assumed that the girl from back then was the one he cared about. They had believed that once he found her, they would naturally end up together.

Mo Xiuchen's fingers tapped rapidly on the keyboard, typing out a message. He sent the email, deleted it immediately, and set the mouse down before responding with certainty, "She isn't."

He had always trusted his instincts. Even if all the evidence pointed to Cheng Jia being that girl, he still refused to believe it in his heart.

His thin, sensual lips pressed into a firm line before he added in an indifferent tone, "Until we confirm otherwise, just treat her as if she is."

Qin Mu furrowed his brows slightly. He doesn't even believe Cheng Jia is his savior, yet he's asking me to treat her as if she is?

What kind of logic was that?
