Chapter 27 - stay with me

The next morning, I awoke to a soothing stillness, my legs feeling much improved. Relieved, I whispered my thanks to Ruby and her father, the warmth of gratitude swelling in my chest. I inquired about Liam, and they told me he was still asleep.

"May I see him?" I asked with a hopeful tone, and Ruby's father nodded, gesturing for me to follow him. I stepped into the dim room, where Liam lay motionless, his eyes closed, bathed in the soft light filtering through the curtain. My heart ached at the sight of him. How had he gotten that wound? I felt a rush of emotion as I recalled his brave act—jumping in to save me. I never asked for his help; why had he thrown himself in the line of danger for me?

As I leaned closer, my gaze fell upon his lips, parched and cracked, as if a desert breeze had swept through his body during the night. Gently, I brushed my fingers against them, lost in gratitude and concern. I couldn't help myself—I pressed a soft kiss to his lips, whispering my thanks for his bravery, and I prayed fervently for his swift recovery.

Later that day, I followed Ruby into the garden, the sun casting a golden glow over the vibrant blooms. As we collected medicine and fruits, the familiarity of nature surrounded me like an old friend. Our conversation lightened, flitting from topics of life to boys.

"Ruby," I said with curiosity, "have you ever wanted to escape this place, to see the world and meet new people?"

Ruby paused, plucking a fragrant blossom and inhaling its sweet scent before tucking it into her bag. "Well, Kyra," she began, reflecting thoughtfully, "my dad has offered me that chance before. But like I told him, I love it here. These are really good people, and the beauty of nature feeds my soul."

I smiled at her sincerity, warmth spreading through my heart.

"Okay, it's almost getting late," Ruby said, glancing up at the sky as the sun dipped lower. "Let's gather our things and head back home."
