Chapter 28 - Ruby

As we made our way back, I lent a hand to Ruby with some chores under the bright afternoon sun. Once we completed the necessary tasks, we settled down near the warm glow of the campfire, where the rest of the tribe gathered around. The elders, with their weathered faces and wise eyes, began to weave captivating tales about their ancestors and the ancient traditions that shaped their lives. Their stories painted vivid images of the past, revealing how their tribe had thrived against the odds in this rugged landscape. I couldn't help but notice the broad, proud smile on Ruby's face; she radiated warmth as she embraced her heritage.

As the night deepened, we sprang to our feet and danced to the rhythmic pulse of the drums. The lively beats filled the air, and our bodies moved fluidly, swaying and twirling around the flickering firelight. Being with Ruby and her family enveloped me in a sense of belonging; I felt a comforting ease that I had rarely experienced. In that moment, it seemed like everyone around me understood and accepted me just as I was. Joy surged within me, and I realized how truly happy I felt, surrounded by people who embraced their culture so wholeheartedly.

Later, as we found a quiet spot to rest, Ruby turned to me and inquired, "So what do you think?" Her genuine curiosity sparked a bright smile on my face.

"Ruby, I really feel like I belong here," I replied, my voice brimming with delight. "Thank you for everything you've done for me." I clasped her hands, grateful for her kindness and warmth. "You know, I have two best friends who would be thrilled to experience this with us. It's been three long months since we last spoke, and I worry that they might resent me for it, but I know how to mend things with them."

Ruby nodded, her expression earnest. "I'm sure they're wonderful friends."
