Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Whispers in the Attic**

**Chapter 3: Whispers in the Attic**

**Blackthorn Manor — Midnight**

The whispers began at dusk.

Eleanor stood at the foot of the attic stairs, her flashlight trembling in hand. The door loomed above her, warped and sealed with a rusted padlock engraved with sigils that pulsed faintly in the dark. Agatha had barred her from this place as a child, claiming it was "full of bad air." Now, the whispers slithered through the cracks—voices young and old, pleading, laughing, *begging*.

***"Eleanor…"***

***"She's here…"***

***"Open the door…"***

The grimoire burned in her satchel, its heat searing her hip. She'd stuffed Abigail's locket inside it hours ago, muffling the girl's ghostly sobs.

"Shut up," Eleanor muttered, not sure who she was addressing.

The padlock fell apart at her touch, disintegrating into black powder.

**Agatha's Workshop**

The attic was a cathedral of decay.

Moonlight seeped through grime-coated windows, illuminating cobwebbed trunks, jars of pickled roots, and a taxidermy raven with garnet eyes. Dust motes swirled like agitated spirits as Eleanor stepped inside.

At the room's heart stood a workbench. Tools of a witch's trade lay scattered: bone-handled knives, vials of mercury-thick liquid, and a brass astrolabe crusted with dried blood. Above it hung a mural of the Blackthorn family tree, its branches ending in hollowed-out portraits. Abigail's face was scorched away.

Eleanor's gaze snagged on a leather-bound journal. The cover read:

***AGATHA BLACKTHORN — 1998-2023***

***DO NOT OPEN.***

She opened it.

**Journal Entry — October 31, 2010**

***Eleanor tried to read the grimoire again today. I caught her tracing the spiral tree with her finger. She doesn't understand—the Veil watches through those pages. It hungers for her. I burned my own copy, but Mercy's original is still out there, buried where the roots are deepest. If it calls to her…***

***God help us all.***

**Journal Entry — September 12, 2022**

***The disappearances have started. Three hikers from the college. Sheriff says it's coyotes. Fool. I felt the Veil stir when their blood hit the soil. It's growing stronger, impatient. The 7th generation is coming of age (Eleanor turns 22 next year). The pact demands an anchor… or a sacrifice.***

***I won't let it take her.***

**Journal Entry — October 29, 2023**

***Too late. The crows brought me a feather soaked in rot. The Veil has marked her. They'll come for her now—the Hollowed Ones, the sheriff, even the damned town. My time is up. I've hidden the keys to the well where the Veil sleeps. Eleanor, if you're reading this: I'm sorry. Burn this house. Run.***

***And don't trust the grimoire.***

---

**The Deputy's Ghost**

A cold hand closed around Eleanor's wrist.

She whirled, dropping the journal. A man stood behind her—mid-20s, wearing a deputy's uniform, his face a mottled blue. Crow feathers protruded from his lips, his throat slit ear to ear.

***"Found the sheriff's missing deputy, didn't you?"*** a voice giggled.

A girl materialized beside him, her cheerleader outfit caked in mud. One of the missing teens.

***"He tried to warn you too,"*** she said, twirling a crow's feather. ***"Now he's part of the chorus."***

The deputy's mouth stretched open, feathers spilling out as he rasped: ***"Leave… while… you… can…"***

Eleanor stumbled back, knocking over a jar. It shattered, releasing a swarm of bioluminescent beetles that swirled into the shape of a woman—Agatha.

***"GET OUT!"*** the specter roared.

The attic exploded in chaos.

Trunks slammed shut. The raven screeched. The grimoire burst from Eleanor's satchel, pages fanning open as it wrote:

***THE WELL. GO NOW.***

Eleanor ran.

---

**The Well**

The moon hung low, bloated and red.

Eleanor knelt by the well at the forest's edge, its stones slick with moss. The grimoire lay beside her, glowing faintly. Agatha's journal had mentioned keys hidden here—but to what?

She lowered the bucket, the crank squealing. When it hit water, something *gurgled*.

Pulling it up, she found no keys.

Only a human finger, ringed with a Blackthorn seal.
