Chapter 73 - Chapter 74: The Net Team, Sacrificial Pawn, Iroha Kiriyatani’s Perspective

We're the inhabitants of internet forums—what people often call the fact-checkers or sacrificial pawns.

Our role? To verify the rumors and fake news swirling online. Even if it's clearly bogus, we'll go out of our way—on our own dime—to test it, fail, and suffer the consequences. That's why they call us "human pillars," the ones who willingly take the fall.

Think of us like the first penguin to jump into the ocean.

If things go well, we're the first to score a meal. But if something's lurking beneath—say, a shark, or an orca, or a sea lion—we're also the first to get eaten.

"Don't push me! I said don't push me! Seriously, do NOT push me!!"

Even if we scream like comedians, someone's gotta step on that obvious landmine first or we'll never move forward. And honestly? It's not even fun if no one dives in headfirst. Every day is an adventure. To truly enjoy life, you have to be sensitive to the scent of chaos and be the first to leap into it. That's the way we sacrificial pawns—the Legion—choose to live.

There's no "leader" among us. Just a bunch of similar-minded individuals acting on their own. The world runs on personal responsibility, so the ability to laugh off failures and false leads is crucial. No point whining about it—there's nothing to gain.

I may have made that sound philosophical and highbrow, but it's not a job. It's just a game. In this world where men are absurdly scarce, dating feels like a pipe dream. So while we're still in our teens or twenties, with youth, energy, and libidos to burn, we want to live it up however we can—even if it's messy and wild.

If someone posts "Hey, I found a free guy," the swarm that descends out of nowhere gets compared to Kurosawa monsters crawling from beneath the floor, or locusts. It's a full-on army—a shining example of our Legion spirit.

That said, criminal behavior and public nuisance are strictly off-limits. Crashing servers with too many inquiries, bothering locals—that kind of unladylike behavior is bottom-tier.

So, as a true woman of action, I booked a room and submitted my time-off request overnight. Come morning, I was on the first bullet train to the location.

There was an open slot on the same day—probably because responsible working adults couldn't clear their schedules in time.

Sure, the transportation and lodging costs hurt my wallet, and my vacation days and work deadlines took a hit, but even if this trip's a bust, I believe that one day I'll get to talk about it and laugh.

Every failure becomes material—something I can turn into manga, novels, and maybe even anime or movies!

If you're the writing type and can turn your experiences into words, you kind of get a free pass for everything. At least, that's the vibe. I'm still just in the doujinshi scene, though!

I expect failure going in—that's how many times I've gotten burned. But I'm not about to back down. Not yet.

You can slow down when you hit thirty. Or after you've had kids. For now, while the world still sees me as "just a kid," I'm gonna take advantage of it and go all out!

I crave romance. I crave that lovey-dovey fluff!

If you want to grab the forelock of Kairos, the god of opportunity (yes, the one with hair only in front), you gotta reach for it yourself. Otherwise, he'll just pass you by!

The girl currently here on assignment? She's someone who landed her job through one of our wild info-hunting runs. We run into each other a lot on-site, so as fellow writers, we've become pretty familiar.

I tried contacting her on a whim and, sure enough, managed to catch her at the inn.

We've shared a few drinks here and there. I know her handle name, her pen name, and her email—but not her real name or age.

She always posts updates on social media before heading out. If she comes up empty, she posts: "No results!" But when something does happen, she suddenly goes silent—probably for NDA reasons. Ironically, that makes her super trustworthy. Like a canary that stops singing when danger's near.
