Chapter 9 - Key

Jack waited for hours until Rielle woke up. In those long hours he thought a lot about what he was going to do in the future.

He wondered about the Galaxy Order and why they wanted Watts dead, and how he would destroy them after he got his gift and gained superhuman powers. He thought about where he would go next with Rielle and who they would meet along the way.

Jack also thought about the past like when he was left alone with Luka only coming to check on him at noon every other day. Jack had to find food and gather water all alone. He taught himself how to do everything because Watts used to do everything for him right until he left without warning.

So while Jack thought for hours Rielle finally came to.

She awoke in a jolt and started to hyperventilate, her body was shaking from the lingering fear Andromeda had left imprinted on her soul.

'Where am I? Where's Jack? Where's that creepy statue?' She started frantically looking around the hall. Many thoughts were rushing through her head, some of concern and some of fear.

Rielle locked eyes with Jack, and right has she saw him tears welled up in her eyes as her concerns didn't come true.

Jack slides closer to her and tires to comfort her even just a little bit.

After Rielle calms down Jack explains everything that the voice told him and all of the things he thought about while she was unconscious.

"So gifts have a price?"

"Yeah, but I have absolutely no idea what that means. Like, what do I have to pay to get my gift."

"I bet it's not a good thing. I mean prices are paid with things you have so maybe you have to give it something important."

"Yeah that sounds..... Right, maybe."

Jack nods in agreement as he stands up and tells Rielle to get up as well.

"Let's start going down to the lower floors."

Rielle agrees and follows him to the stairs on the side of the prayer hall that lead down to the 7 lower floors of the cathedral.

The stairs spiral for a long while. Jack and Rielle step on the crumbling stairs and start their descent. Every step echos throughout the small spiral stairway ending the silence that hasn't been disturbed for a very long time.

After a few minutes pass by, a small light is seen coming from around the corner of the stairs—they made it to the first basement of the grand cathedral.

Jack steps off of the last step and walks through the exit that leads into the small chamber. In this chamber is a single four-sided lantern hanging from the ceiling. It's just barely bright enough for Jack and Rielle to see without their flashlights on.

Jack looks at the walls but they're just flat walls with nothing special about them, so he decides to go to the second level.

"Wow, this room is so boring. I thought we'd at least see something cool but this is just—"

"Just shut up, and let's go down to the next floor."

Jack interrupts Rielle while she criticizes the plain, stone gray room.

He walks across the hall to the next set of stairs and begins his descent once again.

The next floor was similar to the first but it had more decorations spread out randomly in the room as well as an extra four sided lantern hanging from the ceiling.

Jack and Rielle move down to the next floor which looks more like a room for rich people with some small gold plated arches on all four walls, and a third lantern.

The fourth floor gets more expensive and bright with more gold adorned objects being placed inside of it. The lanterns also increased to four.

The fifth and sixth floor continue the pattern of more and more gold and other precious metals being used as decoration for the walls, floor, objects, and the lanterns.

Jack and Rielle became more and more silent the further they went down because of how much gold they saw being used for nothing but decoration.

In their village they don't use money but they know the importance of money so they both became speechless by how the people of this cathedral used it.

While Jack and Rielle were stuck in awe they subconsciously moved down to the seventh floor.

The seventh floor was like a completely different world compared to the rest of the building and outside world. When they walked through the door they saw fields of tiny green plants covering everything their eyes could see.

"Wow."

Rielle subconsciously expressed her surprise of how beautiful this new and different world looked.

"What am I looking at."

Jack was at a loss for words he had never seen anything like this before. He thought that sand was what supposed to cover the ground. He never thought he'd see a plant—which is very hard to keep alive and green—cover anywhere that he looked.

In the middle of this new world was an alter. The alter was had an offering platform with a stone slab behind it. The slab had a circle of six four sided stars with a five sided star in the center. Underneath the stars were words that read.

"This key will unlock the doorway that leads to the entity."

Jack walked close to the alter and started to inspect it, so he could find the key Watts had wrote about in his letter.

After looking at the alter for a bit Rielle started to look as well.

"Jack, doesn't this part right here look a little suspicious?"

Rielle pointed to the star that had five sides instead of the others with four.

"Yeah it does seem a little weird that only one has five sides. See if you can touch it."

"Alright."

Rielle got excited because she would be the one to uncover the secrets of the alter. As soon as her finger got close to the star it started to shine. It became so bright that Jack and Rielle both shut their eyes because if they didn't they feared they would go blind.

The light shone for a few seconds and then it slowly dimmed until it stopped shining completely.

Jack slowly opened his eyes only to see that the star had lost its fifth side and now only had four, and floating in front of the star was an ancient key made of an unknown black metal.

While Jack was looking at the ancient key his hand moved on its own and grabbed the key that was suspended in air.

Right when his hand touched it he started hearing ominous whispering coming from all around him. Jack looked around but only saw Rielle whose mouth wasn't moving—she was only looking at him with a puzzled look on her face.

Jack looked down at the ancient key while trying to ignore the whispering that was assaulting his mind.

"I'm going to turn the key, but I don't know what will happen after so just be prepared. Okay."

"Okay."

Rielle nodded and acknowledged Jack's warning.

Jack stood up and pushed the key forward like he was putting it into an invisible lock. The key forcefully stopped moving.

'Now all I have to do is turn it and I'll get my gift.' Jack thought when the key stopped moving.

Jack took a deep breath and turned the key to the right.

Click!

Right when he turned the key Jack disappeared from the unknown underground world.
