Chapter 32: Who is Counseling Who
After Darren's mocking remarks, Eleanor Vance immediately began searching for information about this person.
In the internet age, a lot of information wasn't hard to find.
She quickly dug up information about this person.
"So he's a streamer too."
She had a feeling of 'this is as I expected.'
This Darren was also a competitive streamer in the amateur circle.
However, this person had been a maverick in the circle since his appearance. The number of people he had offended was far more than just Arthur.
In fact, he initially debuted by dissing people.
A little over a year ago, when he first started streaming, he was extremely high-profile, throwing out map-wide mockery, saying that the older streamers who had been stuck in the amateur circle for seven or eight years were all trash.
Although this method of trying to get famous by attacking prominent streamers was despicable, this person wasn't completely devoid of skill.
Not long after the mockery, he won a championship in his first semi-professional event.
However, that competition wasn't very prestigious, and no professional clubs sent him invitations at the time.
Even so, he persisted in his persona of being a crazy person, continuing to trash talk everywhere. He showed contempt for the seniors in the amateur circle, even making bold claims that he would enter the professional level within two years!
Although this style was quite annoying in the circle, it was undeniable that it made him famous quickly.
As the saying goes, being hated is also a form of fame.
Initially, quite a few people supported him.
But now, as the two-year deadline drew closer, he had failed to enter the professional level several times. His popularity gradually declined, and his reputation completely backfired.
When Eleanor Vance searched for his information, she saw comments like these everywhere:
"Just wondering, is this streamer a professional player?"
"This person is so arrogant, he must be professional, right? What? He's not? Never mind then..."
Seeing these, she couldn't help but smile wryly.
"This is really an unexpected misfortune."
Coincidentally, at this time, Arthur, having finished his interview, returned to the sidelines and found her.
"Eleanor, there are no more matches for me this afternoon, should we go back now?"
Only then did Eleanor Vance look up, half amused and half annoyed.
"You idiot, you still recited the advertisement slogan after meeting such a crazy dog, aren't you ashamed?"
In her view, Darren was definitely a "crazy dog."
However, Arthur just scratched his head innocently. "We took the deal, right? Can we go back on our word?"
Having been a combatant, his understanding of a mission was always that once you take it on, you have to complete it, and the difficulty of the process was never an excuse.
However, Eleanor Vance had a completely different view.
"You're at least a well-known internet celebrity with hundreds of thousands of followers now. You don't have to be so rigid sometimes."
"Oh."
Arthur obediently agreed.
But Eleanor Vance had a gut feeling that this kid probably didn't listen.
After issuing the warning, she didn't forget to show concern. "Your match is tomorrow, right? Be careful not to let your opponent affect your mentality. Just play well.
Your main direction isn't as a competitive streamer anyway. Even if you lose, you won't lose much popularity with proper management, so relax."
However, she found that she was only halfway through speaking before Arthur started to space out again...
What's popularity? This kid has never cared about that.
He's supposed to be an internet celebrity!
The annoyed Eleanor Vance couldn't help but flick his forehead.
"Are you even listening?!"
Arthur hugged his head innocently.
"I'm listening, I'm listening. My mentality is fine, I wasn't affected, thank you for your concern, Eleanor."
Taken aback by this, Eleanor Vance was speechless.
"And if training goes well, I'm confident I can win."
The fact that the match was scheduled for tomorrow was excellent news for Arthur. It meant he and Froakie had half a day more to train.
With the current progress, given another half-day, he was confident that he could get Froakie to fully master the "Thief" move, adding another trump card he didn't have during the preliminary selection.
"The best way to respond to mockery has never been silence, but victory, right?"
Arthur asked back with a smile.
At that moment, Eleanor Vance was momentarily stunned.
It turned out that this kid wasn't so slow-witted that he couldn't hear Darren's mockery.
Even though Arthur didn't understand what "hype" meant, he still understood that Darren's previous words were blatantly insulting him for not having the skills worthy of the main competition and only being in it for the advertisement money.
He understood, but he still recited the advertisement slogan.
Not because he was dull-witted, but because he saw through things more clearly.
Silence was just a temporary retreat. Winning the match was the best way to prove them wrong.
For a moment, Eleanor Vance didn't know who was the adult and who was the fifteen-year-old kid.
How could this kid be so rational and calm?
This mentality even made Eleanor Vance feel ashamed.
"You... it's good that you understand, but... don't push yourself too hard."
She said awkwardly, trying to comfort him.
In a daze, she had a strange feeling – it felt like this kid was counseling her instead?
Nonsense!
It must be nonsense!
She shook her head to dispel this embarrassing thought and quickly tried to regain her dignity as an adult.
"Let's go, I'll take you out to eat. Lunch is on me today, I'll treat you to a big meal."
"Uh, Eleanor, I still have to take Froakie for training this afternoon, I can't eat too much."
"Croak~"
Froakie, on the side, also chimed in.
Because Arthur had promised to make him a special snack after training, and to be honest, the more he ate, the more he felt that his owner's cooking was more to his taste.
Eleanor Vance, feeling her authority as an adult being ignored again, glared at these two annoyingly.
"You guys talk too much!"
But despite her complaints, Eleanor Vance didn't insist in the end.
She took Arthur out for a simple meal and then drove him to the training center.
Before leaving, she didn't forget to tell him, "If you finish late, don't rent a Dodrio to ride back. Call me, and I'll come pick you up."
Arthur didn't act polite and declined, simply nodding and saying, "Okay."
As they spent more time together, his relationship with Eleanor was gradually no longer limited to manager and internet celebrity but became closer to that of a true older sister and younger brother.
Although he didn't know if this kind of development was normal, at least, Arthur didn't dislike this change.
"Well then, do your best, kid. I look forward to your performance tomorrow."
"I will, Eleanor."
...
After that, Eleanor Vance returned to the venue to watch some matches, and by the way, record Arthur's matches for later analysis.
As for Arthur, he spent another afternoon and evening at the training center.
Until after 9 PM, Arthur called Eleanor Vance to pick him up.
The next morning, he uncharacteristically let Froakie sleep in, allowing him to fully restore his energy.
It wasn't until the afternoon that Eleanor Vance drove him to the venue again.
On this day, the last match of the day, he was finally about to step on stage.
