The guard proudly raised is nose to Drake, "Of course I do, only a fool wouldn't know the infamous trash of the Black clan."
"Then you know that anyone with permission can go outside right?"
"I know the rules, but that doesn't mean you can go."
"Why not?"
"Because I didn't let you, since you don't have my permission."
"Can I leave?"
"No!"
"But I just asked for your permission. Why can't I leave?" Usually in situations like this the guard should not have anything to refuse anyone, as long as you had a clean record. As far as Drake was concerned no one should have a cleaner record than him right? That's if they even have a record of him going out. So he was curious as to why this guy wouldn't let him leave even with permission from the clan.
"Because you didn't ask nicely, trash. If you want my permission you'll have to beg for it." he sneered.
Drake shook his head with a smile on his face "You're probably new to the clan aren't you?"
"Humph! So what if I'm new. Brat you better get back inside or I will arrest you right now!" He shouted loudly drawing attention to them while leveling an oppressive glare at Drake.
Drake was however not affected by the guards oppressive stare. "Are you sure, you don't want to look at the permit." He asked calmly.
He was a new guard in the Black clan, as a guard it was part of his job to know everyone in the clan and he knew that Drake was someone he could push around and get away with it. Leaving the clan grounds for whatever reason was something of a luxury, but it was something one could be deprived of if the guards did not approve.
Being somewhat full of himself, he decided he would use this as a way to bully Drake, if he could use this method to curry favor with some higher ups in the clan maybe he could get a promotion. If Drake wanted to leave he would have to beg for it. what he didn't know however was that thanks to his uncles special permit Drake was exempted from this rule. He was the only one that wasn't at the guard's mercy.
"That's it you've been warned. Now you are under arrest for refusing to comply to my orders." He grinned evilly. He had felt insulted that Drake dared to talk back at him. But he was also very happy that Drake had refused to comply, this way he could legally arrest Drake.
'Hehe… looks like I'm getting that promotion I've been dreaming of after all, and so soon too.' He thought.
"What's going on here? Wayne!" just as he was about to arrest Drake another guard walked out of the guard tower that was just beside the gate.
He was a slightly older man than the first guard, he walked with measured strides giving with an air of stability and balance he emitted an intimidating aura.
"This little punk refused a direct order and now I'm taking him in." Wayne the first guard explained lightly. This was his superior that would soon be promoted to head guard, so he didn't dare to be negligent in front of him.
"Taking him in?" he turned his gaze over to the offender and instantly recognized Drake he was startled. "Black Drake! You refused a direct order, Why is that?"
"It's not that I'm refusing a direct order, it's just that this colleague of yours is being unreasonable."
"Unreasonable? What's this about?"
"Ignore him! I'm taking him in. Brat will you come quietly or do I have to use force?"
"Stand down now, that's an order!" he growled at Wayne before turning back to Drake. "Drake, explain yourself."
He wasn't foolish! He knew this newbie was a bully. But before you bullied someone you had to make sure you were safely within the rules or things might just get out of hand.
"I tried leaving the clan. But even though I have a permit he denied it." Drake said slowly.
"Denied?"
"Yes, and even though I recommended he take a look at the permit, he refused. Instead he's adamant about arresting me. Tell me is this unreasonable? I haven't broken any rules set by the clan, yet he wishes to abuse his power to arrest me, tell me is this unreasonable?" Drake spoke calmly.
The guard frowned. It wasn't something new for a guard to deny someone exit at the gate. And even though no one would normally go against this, that didn't legally apply to everyone, it was only considered legal by clan law under special circumstances. But Drake was not someone that these circumstances applied to.
"Let me see the permit." He demanded, he needed to confirm something. Unlike his colleague that was more overbearing, he was careful. He had been working for the Black clan for long and knew the kid was a careful one. There must have been a good reason if he did something, so he wanted to know. Thus was both for protocol sake and to keep himself out of trouble. He knew that even though Drake was deemed the trash of the Black clan. he was taken very good care of by the clan master and the old butler.
"What do you need to see the permit for? I denied his exit request and he refused what's there to confirm." The first guard complained in displeasure.
"Shut up!" Benson scowled at the man.
Drake handed the permit over to the guard for examination and he paled instantly the moment he saw the permit. It was a small palm sized circular badge with golden inscriptions carved on it. He recognized it. He had worked for a long time in the Black clan and he knew a lot of things as a guard. There were some specific things that usually didn't show up but those things were attached to the written and unwritten rules of the clan, this ornament was one of those things.
There were only two badges like this in the Black clan held by the two people that stood at the top of the clan. One was the clan master and the other was the old butler. Anybody that carried either of these two badges must be allowed unrestrained entry and exit anywhere in the clan that was a written rule. For anyone from the Black clan to break a written rule was paramount to courting death, punishable by execution on the spot.
"The permit is legit! You may leave." He said and quickly returned the badge to Drake.
"What! But…"
"You shut up!" he immediately shut down the arrogant guard who was about to protest.
"Black Drake has a legal permit, and so nothing prevents him from leaving whenever he wants. For you to stop him would mean you are going against clan regulations. Are you sure you want to face the punishment for breaking clan rules?" he scowled. 'This idiot is going to get himself killed but he better not drag me down with him.'
Drake accepted the badge and left quietly. He knew Benson had recognized the order badge and knew the consequences he would face for refusing to let him leave. But he wasn't interested in pressing charges with the discipline hall, after all he wasn't very popular with the higher ups in the clan and whatever judgment should be given might end up overruled and he would only attract attention to himself while the guard might only end up walking away with a light punishment. It wasn't worth it, he had better things to be doing.
Seeing Drake leave, Benson sighed in relief before turning to the other guard that was bristling with discontent.
"Why did you let him go? I had him!"
"You idiot do you have any idea how lucky you are he left quietly?"
"Lucky?! Isn't he the trash of the Black clan? What could he possibly do to me?"
"Trash? So what if he's trash, you almost got yourself killed! Do you know what that badge represents, have you ever even read the clan rules?"
"The badge? Wasn't that just a regular permit?" Wayne was a bit flustered, 'What could be so special about a Badge?'
"If you had looked at it, you would have known that it was an Order Token!"
"Order Token?! But that's impossible. Why would the clan trash be in possession of the Order Token?" he was both shocked and frightened. He might not have read all the rules of the clan so he did not recognize the order badge. But that didn't mean he didn't know a thing or two about the order badge and the special privileges its holder enjoyed and the consequences that came with depriving and refusing an order badge. When he remembered the things he had heard about the Order Token and what he had just done, he felt a chill creep up his spine and sweat covered him.
"That is none of our business. Humph, lucky for you he left without saying anything. Now get back to work, pay attention and don't cause me trouble!"
"Yes sir. Thank you sir!"
…
Drake continued on his way after leaving the clan, he was not at all interested in reporting a guard, he couldn't waste his time on that nonsense. He had better things to be doing with his time.
He already had plans.
Now that he had magic power, the only thing that mattered was developing it, which means he has to get stronger and to do that the first thing on the list would have to be joining a Mage academy.
