Chapter 8 - The Welcoming

Nora's pov

"What did Lyra mean when she said you need me?" I asked as we neared his pack grounds.

"Do you intend to keep on ignoring me?" I asked after a moment of silence.

"A room will be given to you in the pack house. You are to keep to yourself, attend your training and try to make yourself useful" he said instead.

"Training?" I stopped walking as I stared at him in confusion.

"Yes. As Lyra mentioned we have to train both your mind and your body. We have to ensure you are ready for whatever is coming" he replied.

"Could both of you stop making it sound as though I am some sort of robot or a machine to be controlled" I groaned as the pack house came into view.

"I'll show you to your room and Emma will show you around" he said, ignoring my words as usual.

Ronan was one of the most infuriating men I had ever met and as I stared at his side profile, I wondered what he could possibly be thinking. I had so many questions but knowing I wasn't going to get any answers from him I remained silent as he led me up a flight of stairs before pulling open a wooden door.

I silently walked into the cream coloured room, unsurprised that the bed was made and the sheets were a matching cream with the wall. Everything in the room was squeaky clean and I turned back to Ronan to find him already staring at me.

"Do you like it?" He gestured towards the room.

"Do I have a choice?" I rose a brow.

"No, not really" his lips twitched as though he was trying to suppress a smile.

"The room is adequate" I said ensuring to keep a blank face.

"I have no clothes though" I pointed out.

"Emma will help you with that" he shrugged.

"So I'm a member of the rogue pack, who would have every thought" I mused as I plopped down on the bed.

"You aren't a member of my pack, you are simply under my protection" he retorted.

"Same difference" I smiled to which he returned with a frown.

"It wouldn't kill you to crack a smile Ronan" I teased.

"I'll have Emma bring you a fresh set of clothes, change and come to the gym" he commanded, leaving the room before I could come up with a response.

After a much needed shower, I wore the simple black tank top and matching shorts Emma laid out on my bed before I made my way out of my room.

"She's the one" a voice by my right caught my attention. I turned to find two young women looking at me with keen interest.

"He gave explicit orders no one is to harm her" one of them said, their eyes never leaving me.

I sucked in a breath before I continued on my way to the gym, following the directions Emma gave me and hoping I wouldn't get lost.

"Are your pack members always this nosy?" I asked as I closed the gym door behind me. I turned towards Ronan and my breath hitched. He was clad in nothing but loose shorts, his strong toned abs on full display and for a wild second my fingers itched to run themselves alone the hard plains of his chest, tracing his firm muscles as they contracted underneath my touch.

"Are you going to stare all day or should we begin?" His voice snapped me out of my thoughts and my cheeks heated in embarrassment as I wished the floor would open up and swallow me alive.

"I was merely taking in the room" I cleared my throat before walking towards him.

"It is a well equipped and...lovely gym" I trailed off when his unflinching gaze remained on me.

"Everyone is curious as to who you are and why you are here. Just try to ignore the stares" he told me and I nodded silently unwilling to speak and make a fool of myself once more.

"This should have been an outdoor training but most of my pack members are making use of the training field" he continued.

"So why am I not training with them?" I asked.

"You would be a distraction to them and I don't need distractions in my pack" he retorted.

"I'm flattered" I replied sarcastically.

"Besides I need to test your strength and agility" he added.

"Alright, so what do I do?" I asked, crunching into a fighting stance.

Ronan merely stared at me, amusement sparkled in his eyes for a second before he masked it.

"For now just shift" he said.

"What?" My stance slackened.

"Shift into your wolf" he clarified as though I didn't understand him the first time.

"I...I can't" I looked anywhere but at him.

"What do you mean?" He scowled at me.

"I've never shifted" I admitted, swallowing down my embarrassment.

The room felt stifling as we both remained silent.

"How is that possible?" He asked after a moment.

"I don't know, my wolf just isn't ready to grace the world with it's presence" I tried to joke.

"This is going to be tougher than I thought" he commented to himself.

"I can do literally everything any other wolf can do except shift. I'm very swift on my legs so that has to count for something" I scowled.

"I think we should kick-start tomorrow" he said gruffly, turning his back towards me.

"No, I'm here already we might as well begin" I protested but Ronan merely gazed back at me for a few seconds before he continued on his way.

"Don't do that" I called out to him but he ignored me.

"Ronan" my voice rang into the empty room but the damn man didn't even miss a beat. Out of sheer instinct I took off one leg of my slipper and threw it straight at him. It struck his head before falling helplessly to the ground, making him freeze before he turned back to me.

"So that's what it takes to get your attention" I mused as I tried to stifle a giggle.
