The memory stone's fiery light engulfed Kael and Elara, the collapsing chamber fading as a vision unfolded. Kael's orange eyes widened, his embered veins pulsing in sync with the glow, the phoenix scar on his chest searing. Elara gripped his arm, her green eyes sharp, her leather coat singed. The Veil's whispers softened, replaced by a deep voice: "Witness the fire that birthed the dark…"
They stood on a scorched plain under a sky ablaze with stars, a massive star falling like a comet, its light igniting the ground in flames. A figure emerged—a man with embered veins like Kael's, his eyes glowing orange, a phoenix soaring above him. He faced a growing shadow—the Veil, its ghostly faces forming, their hollow eyes hungry. The man roared, his flames clashing with the Veil, but the shadow fed on his fire, growing stronger. The voice echoed: "The embered flame sought to purify… but it only fed the curse."
Kael's heart pounded, anger flaring as he watched the man's flames betray him. "You idiot—I've lost everything once already—I won't let it happen again, even if I have to destroy the world to stop it!" he shouted, his voice cracking with rage. His flames surged, a fiery wing sparking behind him, but Elara's grip tightened, her voice sharp. "Kael, it's a memory—control yourself!"
The vision shifted, the man falling to his knees, his phoenix fading as the Veil consumed him, its whispers chilling: More… give us more… Kael's anger turned to sadness, his orange eyes glistening, Mira's hollow gaze flashing in his mind. "Mira… There are things worth more than my life. I'll sacrifice anything to take back what was stolen from me," he whispered, his voice trembling with longing.
A single spark flew from the man's dying flames, soaring into the sky—the star Kael chased. The vision faded, the chamber snapping back, its walls cracking, black water flooding in. The Veil's whispers roared: You'll burn… like he did… Kael staggered, his flames flaring, but a wild grin broke through, defiance sparking. "I'm not him—I'll rewrite the flames' fate, even if the Veil devours the sky!" he declared, his tone carrying a fiery joy, the thrill of a challenge. "I'm doing this because I want to!"
"We need to go—now!" Elara shouted, her journal glowing faintly with the phoenix sketch. She pointed to a tunnel, but the black water surged, Veilspawn forming within, their red ember eyes glinting. Kael's flames surged, but Elara grabbed his scarf, her voice sharp with betrayal's sting: "You're going to get us killed! I trusted you to hold back! This world is cruel… and yet so beautiful. I'll keep fighting for it, even if it breaks me." Kael's guilt flashed in his eyes, but he followed, the Veilspawn closing in.
The tunnel sloped upward, runes pulsing, the air scorching. The Veilspawn's shrieks echoed, water rising, but the tunnel ended at a jagged ledge, faint light above—the surface. Kael's scar burned, guiding him, and he leaped, grabbing the ledge, his flames flickering despite Elara's warning. He pulled himself up, then reached for Elara, hauling her out as the tunnel collapsed, the Veilspawn's shrieks cut off.
They emerged on the black sands, the Great Veil looming closer, its ghostly faces snarling. The star shone brighter, but the Veil's hunger pressed harder. Kael's grin returned, a mix of hope and defiance. "The Veil can hunger all it wants—I'll feed it flames until it chokes!" The emotional swing—from anger to sadness, defiance to guilt, and finally hope—left them breathless, the path ahead clearer yet more perilous.
