Chapter 5 - Job Interview

Friendlier and more peaceful than his old world. That was his conclusion so far. In his old world he didn't interact much with people, but when he did, it seemed like cultivation and strength were the only important traits.

Meanwhile, in this world with a lesser density of spiritual energy, cultivation didn't seem to be the main focus of people. Another thing he noticed was that there was no violence to be found at all so far. Maybe the city lord or the imperial family of this nation made it impossible for violence to occur.

Anyways, this money seemed to be much more important than in his old world, where, with sufficient strength, acquiring spirit stones wasn't a problem. Now that I learned how bandits look and what trading antiques is like, let's see how to earn money.

While walking through the streets, he heard a lot about finding jobs and wondered what they looked like and what he needed to do.

The next day arrived, and the mountain lord left his room to find one of these jobs. Last night he watched some TV and realized something that left him completely confused. The most powerful person within this country, the president, is an ordinary person?

Yes, the spiritual energy was slim, and people didn't seem to interact with each other with the others strength in their minds, but the most powerful person had to be the strongest, right?

There was no way that there were no cultivators in this world; he might not be able to make any progress with his advanced cultivation, but this amount of spiritual energy should at least yield some cultivators, right?

Anyway, this person shown on TV last night as the president didn't even look like an ordinary martial artist; he was overweight and couldn't possibly be the strongest person in this world. Truly a strange place...

While thinking, he walked aimlessly through the jungle of skyscrapers, cars, and people looking for a place where he could find a job. Luckily enough, he overheard a conversation between daughter and father, stating something about the daughter being headed for a job interview in a tech company; he didn't understand everything, but a job is what he wanted, so he followed the woman to the company.

As he got closer, he saw more and more young people, some nervous and some with confidence, heading to the same building as the woman and him. Luckily there were no controls, so he, along with the others, arrived in the waiting room for the job interview.

One after another, names got called, and the person walked into one out of five different rooms where the interview was conducted. Approximately 15 minutes later they would come out and leave the building, mostly looking unsure about the outcome.

The mountain lord wasn't sure if everyone had an appointment and decided to wait in meditation, even after receiving a lot of strange looks due to people wondering about someone coming to a job interview in robes one would see in cultivation movies.

The interviews continued, and the woman he followed came out looking quite pleased with herself. Meanwhile, only five people, including himself, were left uninterviewed.

Soon he was the only one waiting, and some of the interviewers had already left their rooms. "Why is there still a person remaining? Did we forget to call someone in?" One of the interviewers asked.

"No, everyone on the list arrived and got called to be interviewed. This individual is not on the list. And to be quite frank, he didn't seem to be cut out for a position," the secretary responsible for the list of participants said, with some disdain due to the mountain lord's disrespectful clothing choice.

"Well, let's see, this one seems interesting. Hello, what are you doing here?" She addressed the mountain lord.

"Hello, I look for one of these jobs. Can I take an interview?"

The secretary was about to respond until the other woman responsible for interviewing laughed. "Yes, this one is definitely interesting. Since we finished up early anyway, I can take one more interview. I will conduct this one personally; that shouldn't be a problem, right?"

"Yes, of course, Miss President," making the mountain lord's ears act up. Is she a president too?

He followed her into one of the five rooms used to interview the other young candidates looking for a job. Once inside, the door closed behind them, and the woman sat down and gestured for the mountain lord to sit across from her.

A gesture that the mountain lord didn't understand, so the woman said, "Please take a seat," to which the mountain lord sat down.

"So you came here for a job even without going through our official means? First, let's start with the basics: what are your name, age, and desired position? My name is Miss Yan, by the way. Nice to meet you."

The mountain lord was somewhat taken aback; his name again and now even his age? "I recently had amnesia and can't recall my name or age, and for the position, I don't really care as long as it earns money," the mountain lord answered.

"That's sad to hear. Losing one's memory, I couldn't imagine something like that happening to me. But for a job here, you need qualifications. Do you have some, or did you forget them as well? Because if you don't have qualifications, I obviously can't hire you for anything."

"Qualifications? Well, I am good at martial arts and fighting, arrays, and some alchemy. That should be all; is there a job that fits these?"

The woman looked somewhat stunned and looked at the mountain lord for any signs of sarcasm. "Yeah, sure. Martial arts, fighting arrays, and alchemy, was it? Yeah, judging by your outfit, these would be your qualifications. Well, unfortunately, we do not have any jobs fitting for these qualifications. The only thing I could imagine is a bodyguard, but we don't hire bodyguards," Miss Yan answered with a wry smile.

"Bodyguard? What would I do as a bodyguard?"

"Well, I guess if you were one at this company, you would protect the most important person of the company. The president, so me. But once again, we don't hire any bodyguards for now."

"You are a president, right? Is it like the president on TV? Do you rule over this city?" The mountain lord couldn't hold back. Another president and another non-cultivator? This had to be investigated.

"Just how much did you forget from your amnesia?" Miss Yan asked, baffled. "I'm the president of this company. I founded it, and I am the boss here, but only in this company. I don't rule this city or even have any kind of relevant influence within the city."

The two of them talked for some more time, and the mountain lord received some valuable information. Strength was not valued highly. If you were strong, you would join the military and fight for your country under the command of powerless people, or you would be a personal guard for someone earning more money.
