Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: Calm Before the Storm

The soothing, regular crash of the waves against the hull of the ship was the lone sound that filled the air as the Solar Rift Pirates continued on their way towards the Grand Line. The sun was beginning to set below the horizon, bathing the ship and the sea in a golden glow.

Solian was at the bow of the ship, his hand resting lightly on the rail, his eyes gazing out into the limitless sea before him. It had been another sea day with nothing much to do, much like the previous days. The crew had been pushing themselves hard, working themselves to new limits. But today, time had moved slowly.

The peace was almost suffocating. Solian could feel it—everything else had stopped, like the sea itself was in suspension, waiting for something. Maybe it was waiting for what they were going to discover out there. The Grand Line, the final test any pirate would ever face. It ran across the horizon, but far enough away that it seemed unreal. They lived for now in a time of suspension.

Solian's hold on the railing grew tight, his knuckles paling. The silence was oppressive. He was used to movement, to training, to fightings that made his heart thump. But here, there was only the slow passage of time.

"Is this what the calm before the storm feels like?" he breathed, the words being carried away by the wind.

He had spent the last month of training learning how to cultivate his Haki, working himself harder each day. But there was only so much more he had to learn. Armament Haki, Conqueror's Haki—the possibilities were endless. And yet, at that moment, he was considering how a feeling of reluctance was creeping into his mind. Was he truly ready to face what lay before him?

His eyes drifted over to the crew behind him. Vance sat on the deck, sword across his knees, looking out to the horizon. Kael was lost in books, as always, but there was a tension in his posture as he glanced up at the sea from time to time. Jorin, being the perfectionist that he was, was practicing punches, each one more accurate than the last.

Despite their training, despite their growing strength, Solian couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. They were training, but there was a sense that they were training for a fight that they had no control over. The Grand Line would push them to their limits, and there was no use in denying this. The world was vast, and they were infinitesimal by comparison.

The Slow Pace of Growth

The subsequent days passed in much the same manner. Training had become routine now, each member of the crew practicing his own skills. Vance had grown more proficient with the sword, his blows faster and smoother. Kael, less physically gifted, had become more nimble, his mind weighing each potential move as he studied the beasts and obstacles they would face. Jorin's attacks were getting even sharper, and his endurance was now one that rivaled the greatest warriors.

Solian, however, focused on something else—Haki. The more he trained, the clearer it was to him that his body and mind needed to synchronize. Observation Haki was getting better, but Armament Haki was still beyond his grasp. It required a greater sense of unity, something above physical strength.

He sat for hours without moving, his mind on his breath, feeling the pulse of the world around him. Every wave, every wind, every fluctuation in the air—it was all contained. Gradually, he felt the pulse of the energy inside him. It was weak, barely detectible at first, but as he continued, he felt it becoming more distinct. There was a tension, an unseen force that ran through his frame.

"Armament Haki." he growled, focusing. "Focus."

It was a feeling of buzzing through his body, of heat spilling out from his core. But it was not enough. Not yet.

He had found that it wasn't so much about focusing his power; it was about recognizing it, having control over it. The harder he focused, the more he realized that true strength was about balance.

Kael's Quiet Wisdom

One evening, after another long day of training, Kael joined Solian on the bow of the ship. He was unusually quiet, his glasses catching the light as he looked out over the sea.

"Solian," Kael began, his voice soft, "you've been pushing yourself hard lately. What's going on in your mind?"

Solian glanced at his crewmate and sighed. "I'm not sure. I've made progress, but it doesn't feel like enough. The Grand Line. it's going to be a whole new world, and I'm still trying to figure out what my true potential really is."

Kael smiled weakly, his gaze remaining on the horizon. "It's the same for all of us, you see. We're all learning, but we can't rush it. We all have our own path, our own journey to embark. And you're correct—there will be danger to come. But that's why we train. So that we keep moving, no matter how glacial the pace. It's about perseverance."

Solian stood in silence for a moment, absorbing Kael's words. The slow speed of their progress was finally beginning to get under his skin, but maybe that was the point. Sometimes the greatest progress did not occur by rushing towards the next great fight, but through the quiet breaks in between.

"You're right," Solian said, his voice firm. "I suppose I just feel like I have to be more, do more. all at once."

Kael laughed. "We all feel that way at some time or another. But believe me—there's no hurry. We'll all get where we're going when we're ready."

Jorin's Determination

That evening, Jorin went to speak to Solian as the latter stood on the bow. His expression was as stern as always, fists still tightened even when he was not practicing.

"Captain," Jorin explained in all seriousness as always, "I've been thinking. We are growing stronger, but our teamwork needs to improve. We need to trust each other more."

Solian faced him, surprised at Jorin's sudden change of heart. "What are you talking about?

"I've been pushing myself harder," Jorin continued, "but I know now that I can't do it alone. We're a team. I need to be able to count on you all to have my back. We need to get in sync, coordinate our movements in battle. We've got power, but power isn't going to get us the Grand Line. We need strategy."

Solian smiled, nodding. "You're right. It's not a question of personal strength. As a crew, we need to learn to fight together. That's something we'll work on in the next phase of training."

A Time of Quiet Growth

The days went by in a slow, reflective pace. Solian, Vance, Kael, and Jorin continued to train, each growing at his own rate. Solian's Haki was beginning to form, but he knew that he had a long way to go. His Devil Fruit abilities, though powerful, were not enough on their own. The training was necessary, but more so were the moments of contemplation—the minutes alone with his mind clear that enabled him to really grow.

And as they crossed over to the Grand Line, they did feel the change happen, but it was a subtle one. The winds shifted, the seas smoothed, and between the tranquility, they knew the world would test them soon enough. They were ready, yes, but only so in the sense that people ready themselves when they are aware that their journey is now finally about to start.
