Chapter 10 - Escape

The Blake family was also one of the twelve great families. They were one of the three great families that occupied the southern region of the floating cloud continent alongside the Thornes and Vyre.

They conducted regular trade with the Thorne family, and both sides were on relatively good terms. The biggest reason was that his fiancée was a member of the Blake family.

Adrian believed that as long as he could obtain the help of the Blake family alongside the sage's inheritance, it would only be a matter of time before he would be able to rebuild the Thorne family.

This thought finally relieved him of his burdens, and he was finally able to get some sleep while still sitting in the chair.

However, reality would prove to be far crueler than he imagined, as he wouldn't expect the next turn of events.

After waking up early as usual, Adrian did some light cultivation to prepare himself for the day as it was going to be a long one. He knew that they had to leave the city today. The residents were starting to suspect something was up as they hadn't seen the people from the Thorne family since the previous day.

Even though they could see evidence of activity within the residence, no one had come out. The black robes men were becoming increasingly disruptive and were causing problems within the city.

However, after thinking that no one could take action without the approval of the Thorne family, the residents decided to hold it in until they could complain to the Thorne family.

In the house of Thorne, the people from the demonic faction were becoming increasingly restless. They had already been here for more than a day without anything to show for it. Despite their seemingly foolproof assault plan, they knew that they were walking on thin ice.

They could only stay in the city for so long before someone discovered something was amiss. Their plan was already delayed by a whole day. This brought a sense of unease and anxiety among the members still in the House of Thorne.

Deep underground, Elder Crow was furious. The two individuals he had sent to look for those Nascent Soul cultivators couldn't find them. What was worse was that upon searching for the toke of the Patriarch, they found out that it was missing.

In his fury, Elder Crow ruthlessly killed those two individuals. Everyone around him became tense. They didn't even dare to breathe loudly for fear of drawing his attention.

Meanwhile, Elder Crow was also in a dilemma. He had been entrusted with this monumental task, and failure wasn't an option. If he were to return without any results....

He shuddered as he didn't want to think about that possibility. He was of a fairly high rank among demonic cultivators, therefore, he knew of some secrets others did not.

The higher ups were searching for a particular item, which they believed the Thorne family was in possession of. In fact, it was solely because of this item that this attack had been orchestrated.

He didn't know what it was, but he guessed it had to be special for it to warrant mobilizing the strength of the entire demonic faction to attack one of the twelve great families for it.

However, he was a smart man and didn't inquire into matters he shouldn't. Right now, he was stuck in a lurch. The item they came to retrieve could not be found, and they also could not break into the treasure vault. The only good things they had found were in the rings of the patriarch of the Thorne family and other high-ranking members.

However, this was not enough to make up for their losses. The number of members that they lost was numerous, and they paid a huge price to destroy the Thorne family. They could not keep up the illusion array for long, as people were already suspicious. This frustrated him to no end.

His mind drifted to those two Nascent Soul realm cultivators. Right now, they were the only ones who could shed light onto this matter. Therefore, he mobilized the strength of everyone still left in the House of Thorne and ordered them to search for them. This was all he could do for now.

When the kids woke up, Adrian prepared breakfast for the three of them. After breakfast, Adrian told them that they were leaving the city. Upon further explanation, the kids knew that there was no hope for them in the city currently.

They became a bit upset, especially Jayson, but they didn't make a fuss. They packed up and changed into black robes to hide their identity. Adrian debated whether to rent a carriage to speed up their journey.

They were currently in the inner regions of the city and would have to make it to the outer regions quickly. In the end, he decided to risk it. They rented a carriage with a rank 2 magical beast and continued on their journey.

Luckily for them, they were able to avoid attracting any attention and made it to the outer regions in the afternoon. They stopped at a restaurant where they rented a private booth and had lunch.

If Adrian were alone, he wouldn't have bothered with this. However, he did so out of consideration for his siblings. Ever since they figured out they had to escape, their moods had been down.

While he wasn't exactly alright as well, he had to put on a brave face for them and ensure their safety. The restaurant was just to take their minds off the recent events.

It seemed to work as the children temporarily forgot about their sorrow when faced with the delicious meals in front of them. Adrian only ate a little to maintain an appearance in front of them.

Since they were moving in secret, Adrian and the children had their cloaks on throughout. This made the waitress a bit uneasy, but since he was a paying customer, there was nothing she could do about it.

They finished their meal quickly and made their way into the streets on foot. They had ditched the carriage since it would have been far too conspicuous in the outer regions.

Adrian was moving with a purpose in mind. He led them towards the house that he had previously used to sneak into the city. Situations like this were exactly what it was intended for.
