Chapter 11 - Korugar

(3rd Person POV)

Hal looks at the defeated Star Sapphire. He doesn't like that Carol was used like this, as he is well aware of what the Star Sapphire gem does to her. The Star Sapphire is uncontrollable, even for the Zamarons. Their manipulation of Carol, combined with the gem, alters her personality and causes her to want to fight Green Lantern, perceiving him as lesser simply because of the Zamarons' superiority complex. They believe themselves to be more than what they are, especially compared to the male sex and want to prove it. It was for this reason that Carol managed to use advanced techniques and applications of her power, since the Star Sapphire gem is handed from one Queen to the next. So the memories are mixed and change her. But Hal is not your usual Green Lantern. He was prepared for a fight, and while he was impressed and surprised by the power shown, he was by no means at a disadvantage.

*POP*

Star Sapphire suddenly vanishes. Hal creates a compass which shows him what he wants to find most. It is a classic in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and a powerful tool here, now that Hal created it. As soon as he removed his barrier around her, she was forcefully teleported. He understands that the Zamarons are here on Earth and wants to find them. A word might be what they need now. He shoots through the sky, following the compass, when he is suddenly interrupted by someone.

"Hal Jordan. What are you hurrying for?"

"Sinestro? What are you doing on Earth and in my Sector?"

"I was sent here by the Guardians to train you. I told them that I had better things to do, but they didn't care. So here I am. What is going on on this planet?"

"Zamarons have taken chosen a new Queen and made her the Star Sapphire. We just fought, and I won, but they teleported her back. I'm on my way there."

"Zamarons, and here I thought this would be a short assignment. Very well, let us proceed."

The two shoot through the air, flying to where Hal's compass is pointing. As they approach, the signal suddenly changes, indicating that they have just left Earth.

"They left, Sinestro! We just missed them."

Hal and Sinestro reach the desert, where Carol is located, the Star Sapphire lying on the ground in front of her. Hal descends and picks it up.

"A Star Sapphire?! Why would the Zamarons leave it here on Earth?" Sinestro asks.

"I assume they want her to turn back eventually. Although I am not certain."

"Ugh, the Zamarons are bothersome. We have to get the gem to safety; that much is certain. It happened in your Sector, so it is your responsibility, Hal Jo-"

"Whoa, stop using my name. My identity is a secret on my planet."

"I don't understand why you would do that. I am loved on Korugar. You would be jealous seeing it and how clean and orderly everything is."

"Is that so?"

"You don't believe me? I shall prove it to your primitive mind, Hal Jordan. Come, we have training to do." Sinestro says and shoots into the sky.

"Hal?" Carol has woken up and heard Sinestro talk.

"Ugh, listen, Carol. Would you mind looking at this for a second?" Hal says, and he creates a Neuralyzer.

*FWOM*

...

"Ugh ... Hal? What ... what happened? How did I get here?"

"You had an accident with your plane. Come, I'll take you back."

"Thank you. So the knight in green armour also saves me for a change."

"I don't know what you're talking about; I constantly save you."

"One time, that's it."

"That's more than a lot of people get. I think you are a bit arrogant."

"Mhm."

Carol knew about Hal being Green Lantern; she had figured it out when he saved her. He only removed the memories of what happened here today to make sure the personalty of Star Sapphire was gone for good. If Carol wanted to become a lantern, she should do it on her own free will.

.

"Are you finished with your cleaning up?"

"Indeed, let's go. What did you say you were here for?" Hal asks.

"The Guardians think that you shall be trained."

"Why now? I have been a Green Lantern for two years now."

"I don't know how much time that is on Korugar, but I was busy, and the Guardians forced me to come this time. Let us see how much you have learned."

And so the 'training' of Hal Jordan began. It had been two years since he first picked up the mantle, and logically, he should have been trained in the beginning, but the Guardians weren't confident that he could do it. And two years was nothing for a race that was immortal. Sinestro took Hal into deep space, where he first tested his reflexes. Hal had to fly through a meteor storm and dodge all of them while making it through to the other end. Sinestro observed his 'pupil' closely, with a stern expression on his face.

"This is beautiful."

"What? Do you think I brought you here to play wth meteor storms?"

"It was to train my reflexes, wasn't it? I can still find it beautiful though, can't I?"

"You're wasting your mental energy. Your Ring will lead you through such simple obstacles. My purpose here is to train your mind. To teach you the virtues of seriousness, efficiency, precision and perfection in thought and deed. The sort of perfection that creates perfect cosmic order."

"Why would I have to create perfect cosmic order? Isn't my purpose to protect the weak and fight evil? We aren't tyrants, Sinestro, but protectors."

"You speak with the immaturity that comes from a race as young and naive as yours. I will show you the error of your ways."

They continue their training in space. Sinestro has Hal deal with all kinds of natural phenomena. He tells him to fly through the asteroid ring of planets. First, he was told to dodge them and fly around the planet as fast as possible. It was a challenge for Hal, but he devised a method of simply using his willpower to move around all obstacles, regardless of their size. After that, he simply sped up and dodged everything automatically. It was a useful experience for Hal, as he found another method of using his ring and will, by creating passive commands. He basically created a code made out of willpower that affected his own reality. And that was a tremendous step.

After finishing that task, Sinestro told Hal to get through the field forcefully and not dodge but to fly through all the debris. This was far easier than the first test, as Hal had been working on increasing his own durability and that of his suit. Whenever he got into a fight and had to coordinate attacks or defences, he would create a helmet for himself to multitask and use his power like a computer to have various screens in front of him; if not, he would use a face mask to protect his identity, since he had a barrier that protected his entire body at all times. He didn't have a cape, as he didn't like them. He preferred to have as much freedom of movement as possible.

Finally, Hal did something else. He used his willpower to fill out all the billions of gaps between the debris of the ring around the planet and build a highway around it. Then he created a nice ride for himself and rode the highway around the planet. Needless to say, Sinestro wasn't happy with Hal for 'wasting his ring's energy. ' But Hal liked it, and that was all that mattered to him.

Apart from that, Sinestro tested Hal in various other things. He had to stop a massive fire from reaching a city on a distant planet. He created massive fans to push back the fire and then created large clouds in the sky, making it rain and putting out the fire.

Then he had to save a space train from being swallowed by a black hole, which was by far the hardest challenge to date for Hal. Not that he couldn't do it, but he hadn't ever attempted to do something like that yet. And Hal solved it rather ... surprisingly, according to Sinestro. What is a black hole? Well ... a hole, right? Well, no. These objects aren't really holes. They're huge concentrations of matter packed into very tiny spaces. A black hole is so dense that gravity just beneath its surface, the event horizon, is strong enough that nothing – not even light – can escape. Hal knows this, but who says that he can't solve this using a child's logic?

Sinestro watched as Hal created a massive drain plug and stopped the gravitational pull entirely. Was this possible? According to physics, the answer would be a clear no. But that's not how a Green Lantern ring works. Hal used his infinite willpower to make it happen. However, there were consequences for this. The gravitational forces collided, creating a singularity that resulted in the mother of all bombs. Hal was ready to contain it, of course.

[Warning. Willpower exceeding Power Ring capabilities.]

But Hal didn't listen and protected the space train and contained the massive explosion at the same time. When all was done, Hal noticed a crack in the ring and knew that he had pushed it a bit too far. The truth was that he hadn't reached the limits of his willpower; he never would. However, the ring was only capable of doing so much, and Hal's willpower was simply infinitely too great. He understood that he would have to create a new ring, made of his own willpower and soon.

.

"Hal Jordan, I may have a situation on my home planet, Korugar. Twice a day, I send a beacon, simply to reassure them that if I cannot be there in the flesh, then I am in my spirit. The last three beacons have gone unacknowledged. I've been busy with the Guardian's discussing your training, but now ..."

"Then let's go to your planet, Sinestro."

"Of course we are; that wasn't a question. I've been assigned to keep you insight, so the Guardians ordered me to take you, and the worst of it, whatever's wrong on Korugar wouldn't have gone wrong if I hadn't been busy teaching someone who's passable already. The people of Korugar are like children. Essentially, they are good, but they need to be closely monitored. Follow me!"

The two fly through space and move from Hal's Sector 2814 to Sinestro's 1417. Sinestro doesn't talk the entire way, and neither does Hal. He knows what is coming, and while he doesn't know what Universe he's in, Sinestro usually ends the same way all the time. He prepares himself for the inevitable confrontation.

"That is Korugar, just in front of us. That is what every synapse of your tangled brain should be concerned with, to achieve the same with your home planet."

"Is that so? Well, then why don't you tell me about Korugar?"

Instead of answering himself, Sinestro allows the planet to speak for itself. But Hal doesn't react the same way as Sinestro expected. As they reach the capital, Hal is disturbed by the fact that the citizens obviously worship Sinestro. Large posters with Sinestro's face are hanging all over the city, and Hal sighs, understanding what this means. Sinestro had subjugated his planet, as Hal knew he would.

"What is all this, Sinestro? Why are there so many depictions of you around? And is it always this deserted?"

"They love me, obviously. As for your second question, it certainly is not. Normally, there would be a rally, parades, and orchestras anytime I fly in. But this is a disaster. I knew this might happen when the Guardians forced me to train you."

"What did you do, Sinestro? Why would they love you this much?"

"I bring order to their chaotic little-"

*BOOOOOOMM*

Both Hal and Sinestro are suddenly attacked by beams of energy fired at them from the ground. The people of Korugar are shooting at them. They waited for Sinestro to return to the planet and ambush him, bringing him down.

"DEATH! DEATH! DEATH TO GREEN LANTERN TYRANNY!"

In case it isn't clear. Hal doesn't have a cape, he's a Green Lantern. He uses the helmet like Tony Stark would, in case he does research or coordinates his constructs as he did in Gotham.
