Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: "Scavengers" and "Hunters"

"All eight of you, come with us," the thinner young man said indifferently after taking a brief look at Dudian. Then he turned around and left the classroom with his companion.

The old man with a white beard saw that the eight children including Dudian were standing there in a daze without moving. He quickly said, "Hurry up. This is your good fortune. Others would want it but can't get it." Hearing his words, several children exchanged a look. A tall child stepped forward, summoned up the courage to take the lead, and the others followed one after another.

Dudian walked at the end. He observed the selected children and those who weren't selected without showing his thoughts, trying to find the reason why he was chosen through comparison. But soon he found that there seemed to be no common points. At least, there were no obvious differences in appearance, skin color, and other external aspects.

Since there were no differences externally, it must be something internal.

He suddenly thought of the physical examination before enrollment. His eyes narrowed slightly, and it seemed that this was the most suspicious factor!

While he was thinking, he had already followed the other children to the huge playground outside the Law Academy. As soon as he arrived, Dudian saw a black carriage parked at the school gate. The wheels of the carriage were embedded with iron bars and huge rivets, and it looked extremely sturdy at first glance. The horse pulling the carriage was even more astonishing. It was nearly three meters tall, wore a steel helmet all over its body, and stood there like a fierce beast.

It wasn't just Dudian who was surprised; the other children were also stunned.

"Come here and get in the carriage," the thinner young man said, being sparing with his words.

All the children hesitated for a moment. The tall child who had been walking at the front seemed to take on the role of the leader consciously. He summoned up the courage and said, "E-excuse me, where are we going?"

The thinner young man stared at him coldly and said, "Just get in the carriage when I tell you to!"

The cold and sharp gaze made the tall child shiver all over, and his hair stood on end. His face turned pale, and he didn't dare to ask any more questions. He carefully avoided the huge horse and climbed up the steps of the carriage.

Seeing this, the other children also fell silent and obediently followed behind.

The carriage was extremely spacious, more than enough to accommodate eight children. Dudian sat in the corner, next to two nervous children. He quietly looked at the young man in black armor who jumped onto the coachman's seat in front. Suddenly, he felt that he must make something to ensure his safety as soon as possible. This world was more dangerous than he had imagined. Although there were laws, it was obvious that certain existences could ignore the laws!

As for human rights.

In a feudal society where serfs and nobles existed, human rights definitely did not include "equality" and "freedom".

The carriage galloped away from the Law Academy at an extremely fast speed. The buildings on both sides of the road flashed by rapidly. Before long, Dudian saw a high wall. There was a large character engraved on the wall. During the few months he had lived in Jula's house, Dudian had learned a lot of words from Jula, and he recognized this character. It was the Chinese character for "poverty" .

Dudian recognized that this was the high wall separating the residential area from the commercial district. Could it be that this carriage was going to take them to the commercial district?

The other children obviously recognized this too. Remembering what the old man with a white beard had said, the tension in their hearts was immediately replaced by surprise, and their faces were filled with excitement.

Even a child longed to enter the commercial district where nobles and the wealthy lived and see the scenery inside.

Dudian wasn't surprised. Being able to directly take people away from the Law Academy showed that these people had great influence behind them. He just didn't know what their purpose was, whether it was good or bad.

Soon, the carriage whizzed past the concert hall building that Dudian had been to before. Seeing this building, Dudian couldn't help but think of the little girl's sharp questioning words. He suddenly felt a bit amused. Although he had thought that he would sooner or later step into this forbidden commercial district for commoners, he didn't expect to be back here just a month later.

Before long, the black carriage arrived in front of an ancient castle. The thinner young man in front jumped down, opened the carriage door, and shouted at everyone, "Get out of the carriage."

All the children were obedient and got out of the carriage obediently.

Dudian was still the last one. However, just as he was about to get out of the carriage, the thinner young man suddenly said, "You don't need to get out." After that, he went back to the coachman's seat in front, cracked the whip, and drove the carriage away at a gallop.

Only the seven children who had gotten out of the carriage were left standing there, looking confused.

Dudian's face changed slightly, and his heart skipped a beat. He lifted the curtain at the back of the carriage and looked out. He saw the figures of the seven children gradually moving away. Just before they disappeared, a middle-aged man in a black suit suddenly walked out of the ancient castle and came up to those children.

The carriage passed a corner, blocking his view. Dudian withdrew his gaze and sat alone in the empty carriage, his mind racing.

Escape?

Resist?

Obviously, with the other side's influence, he could only be at their mercy.

Soon, the carriage stopped in front of a manor. This was an extremely vast manor. There was a white-painted wooden fence outside, and the green lawn inside was neatly trimmed. At the moment, there were several gardeners watering the lawn.

The carriage door was opened. The thinner young man looked at Dudian in the carriage. A smile appeared on his usually cold face, and he said, "Little guy, you're quite calm."

Dudian was slightly taken aback when he saw his smile. The nervousness in his heart gradually eased, and he directly asked, "Is it because of the radiation value?"

The thinner young man seemed like a different person, wearing a smile on his face. He said, "You're quite smart. That's right. They all barely passed the assessment. Even after training, they can only become 'Scavengers'. As for you, you have the hope of joining our 'Hunters'."

"Scavengers? Hunters?" Dudian's heart stirred when he heard these two terms. Seeing that the young man seemed more talkative now, he asked, "What are Scavengers?"

"Get out of the carriage first," the thinner young man said. He reached out and lifted Dudian out of the carriage, then took his hand and walked towards the manor. As they walked, he said, "Scavengers are responsible for searching for available resources in the safe area developed outside the Great Wall."

"Outside the Great Wall?" Dudian was extremely surprised. So they were working outside the Great Wall? The old man with a white beard obviously knew this. He had said before that there were demons and plagues outside the Great Wall and that one must never go out. Yet, in a blink of an eye, he had sent them out without hesitation and even said it was their good fortune... What the hell!

Although he didn't believe in demons, there was no doubt that it was extremely dangerous outside the Great Wall. At least, the radiation in the air was much higher than inside the Great Wall. Wait a minute, radiation? Dudian suddenly had an epiphany and understood. No wonder the radiation value was used to distinguish between Scavengers and Hunters. Most likely, the environment outside the Great Wall was extremely harsh with high radiation. So, people with high radiation in their bodies would easily reach the saturation point if they went outside the Great Wall. That's why only those with low radiation values were selected to go.

Realizing this, he couldn't help but take a deep breath in shock. So, this so-called physical examination was actually a secret assessment implanted among the commoners by those above?
