Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Desert

"Survive for ten days?" All the children were taken aback. Although Tob said it was "simple", after three months of getting along, everyone already knew what he meant by "simple". No one had expected that this assessment would not be the written exam they had in mind but a practical experience!

Obviously, to survive for ten days, they had to initially master all four courses of the "Foraging" category!

Soon, some people started calculating.

As long as there was a water source, the human body's limit of fasting was between seven and fifteen days. If one had extremely strong willpower, it was possible to live for a month. That is to say, as long as they could find a water source, they had hope of passing!

If they were lucky enough to find some food, there was no problem at all in surviving for ten days!

With this thought, many children became more confident.

Dudian frowned slightly. He wasn't too optimistic in his heart. Given Tob's style, he would never give such an easy test.

"Children, come with me," at this moment, the woman named "Chris" standing beside Tob said with a smile. "Sister will take you to a fun place. I'm sure you'll like it."

Some older boys' eyes lit up when they heard her words.

"Line up," Chris smiled slightly and turned to lead the way.

All the children walked side by side in pairs, forming a long line. Under Chris's leadership, they soon came to the side of the drill ground. There were actually dozens of large black carriages parked here. Each carriage was the same as the one that had brought Dudian here before. The carriage could accommodate seven or eight adults. If it were children, it could easily fit ten.

"Get in the carriages," Chris pursed her lips and smiled.

The coachmen of these carriages were all young men wearing standard soft armor, and among them was the young man in standard soft armor who had brought Dudian here before.

"Dian, come here," Mekin called out to Dudian in front of one of the carriages.

Dudian took a look and walked over.

Besides Mekin, the other two children who lived in the same room as him were also in the carriage. Obviously, under Mekin's call, they had all gathered together, preparing to take care of each other in the upcoming test. After all, the people in the same room were the most trustworthy.

"Hey, the curtains here are all sewn up," Mekin was about to lift the curtain to look outside and immediately noticed this.

Dudian suddenly had a bad feeling in his heart. Could it be that the testing ground this time... was outside the Great Wall?

...

...

The carriage shook slightly, and the sound of iron hooves trampling on the ground echoed. Dudian closed his eyes and listened and calculated silently. It had been twenty minutes since they left the drill ground. At first, he could still hear the voices of some passersby outside the carriage, but later, the noise outside gradually died down. Obviously, the carriage had driven into a remote area, and it was silent all the way.

After this silence lasted for half an hour, the speed of the carriage gradually slowed down.

When it finally stopped completely, Dudian slowly opened his eyes and calculated with his fingers very slightly. "Twenty-eight turns, three short stops in the middle, probably for inspections. The route should be westward..."

He repeatedly recalled the route he had felt before in his mind. The carriage was moving very fast, so the turns were very obvious, and he could feel whether it was a left turn or a right turn.

If Chris knew what was going on in Dudian's mind at this moment, she would definitely be stunned. Although it wasn't difficult to do this, as long as one paid attention, other children could also do it. However, from the moment they entered the carriage, the psychological pressure caused by the black and enclosed environment, as well as the pressure brought by the first test, made all the children feel uneasy and worried. How could they still have the mind to pay attention to these things? This was absolutely a terrifyingly cruel calmness!

Most importantly, this calmness appeared in a child!

With a click, the carriage door was opened. Dudian immediately knew that this was not a inspection but that they had reached their final destination!

All the children quickly got off the carriages from all directions and eagerly looked at the place where they would have to survive for ten days. The next moment, all the children were stunned.

In front of them was actually... a desert!

That's right, a desert full of only sand grains!!

Survive in the desert for ten days?!

All the children felt like spitting blood.

Dudian jumped off the carriage. Seeing this vast and sweltering desert, he couldn't help but sigh deeply. Sure enough, what Tob said as "simple" could never be that "simple"!

"Children!" Chris clapped her hands to attract the attention of all the children. With a charming smile on her face, she said, "Next, you will have to survive here. If anyone can't hold on, just draw an 'X' mark on the ground, and you will get rescued. Of course, while getting rescued, it also means being eliminated. Similarly, it also means that your family must bear the training expenses for this period. I believe you already have a rough idea of this cost. If you don't want your family to go bankrupt, then work hard!"

Having said this, she blinked her eyes and said, "Good luck to you. By the way, this first test is the simplest one." After that, she turned around and jumped onto a black horse that was nearly three meters tall. The horse had pure black fur and was of the same breed as the horse that Dudian had seen pulling the carriage for the hunters.

Obviously, this also indicated Chris's identity. She was likely to be a hunter!

Dudian squinted his eyes and quietly watched as Chris whipped the horse and galloped away. The other carriages also turned around and left in formation, raising a cloud of dust that gradually disappeared from the sight of all the children.

For a moment, there were only more than three hundred children present in this vast desert.

"How are we supposed to live like this!"

"This is simply murder!!"

"I knew it wasn't that simple..."

After Chris and the others left with the carriages, the children present immediately shouted angrily.

"Everyone! Everyone!" A tall and strong child in the crowd shouted loudly. "We need to unite. First, we need to find a water source. As long as we find a water source, we can survive. Unity is strength!" Obviously, this child adapted very quickly.

Hearing his words, the other children stopped complaining. Some echoed his words, while others began to think about how to survive in the next ten days. During the three-month special training before, everyone had already learned not to reason with Tob because you used your mouth, and he used his fists!

"Dian, let's go with them," Mekin said to Dudian. Since the first day when they dried the bed boards and through their interactions in the following days, he had gradually gotten used to asking for Dudian's opinion. In their room, although he was the most influential, the one with the most prestige was undoubtedly Dudian.

"No, the four of us will do just fine," Dudian shook his head without thinking.

Mekin was stunned and said, "Why?"

The other two children also looked puzzled. Unity is strength, which was an absolute truth, and the content taught in the courses also said that in harsh environments, one needed to unite to have hope of survival!

However, the prestige Dudian had established in the past three months made them not question him immediately.

"If there are too many people, it may be easier to find a water source. But this is a desert, not a jungle or a swamp. Water sources are scarce here. Even if we find one, it can only supply the needs of some people. In the end, we will definitely fall apart due to the unequal distribution of resources," Dudian said directly.

Mekin and the other two children were taken aback and immediately understood.

"Let's go. We've already wasted a lot of time," Dudian looked around, found a direction, and took the lead in walking forward.
