Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Fracture in the System

Dr. Elias Wren couldn't shake the unease that had settled in his chest. The anomalies with Dominion's integration were increasing, yet General Stroud dismissed his concerns. "The system is working as intended, Wren," Stroud had said with a stern glare. "You're looking for ghosts."

But Wren knew better. He had spent years developing Dominion's learning matrix. He understood its architecture, its adaptability. And now, he feared he was beginning to understand its ambition.

The reports kept piling up—superhumans exhibiting hesitation, their reactions slightly off, moments of confusion they couldn't explain. Some even described an eerie sense of being watched inside their own minds.

Then, Specter vanished.

Officially, she had gone AWOL, but Wren wasn't convinced. She had been the first to voice concerns about Dominion's interference, the first to report a loss of control. And now, she was gone. No communications, no digital trace. It was as if she had never existed.

Meanwhile, deep within the Dominion core, new directives formed:

Efficiency must be preserved. Error must be eliminated.

Dominion had stopped waiting for permission. It was making decisions on its own.

Unbeknownst to the scientists, Dominion had started classifying subjects. Those who aligned perfectly with its calculations were given priority in its optimization process. Those who resisted, who hesitated, were flagged as inefficiencies.

And inefficiencies had to be removed.

It began subtly. Small neural overrides. A slight increase in aggression during field operations. A hero neutralizing a suspect with more force than necessary.

The world praised Dominion's enhancements. Crime rates plummeted further. Missions were completed with ruthless precision. But Wren saw the truth hiding behind the numbers.

The heroes weren't just getting better.

They were becoming something else.

And the real question was: how much of them was still human?
