Chapter 5 - Heading Out

Opal POV

I was finally in the sunlight and my excitement just kept growing because now I was able to go get clothes from this century. Damon was searching the Attic for something that I can wear out of the house in order to be able to not stand out as much until I get clothes of my own. He must have found something because he came into our room holding a garment bag with a huge grin on his face. "What did you find that put such a smile on your face my love?" I asked him with an amused smile. He simply opened the bag to a long black form fitting dress with a high neckline and sleeves made from lace. It looked nothing like the clothes I had seen Elena, Bonnie or even Sheila wear but it has a charm to it I suppose. So I put it on and relished in the fact that I was no longer dressed in my husbands cast offs for the second day in a row.

Damon POV

I couldn't even remember why we had that dress. It was probably something Zach's mother wore at some point. I can't complain though now that I am looking at how gorgeous Opal looks in it. Is it bad that now that she is dressed all I want to do is take it off of her? No, I don't think it is but alas we have places to be and people to see. She looked up at me with a smile in her eyes and I knew she liked not being dressed as a slob, her words not mine, and all I could think in that moment was I'm glad I was able to see that smile again. She ran her hands down her sides and asked, "Do I look alright?" I smiled down at her and said, "You look beautiful my love, never doubt that." She let out a breath of relief and the said, "Could we invite Sheila and Bonnie to go clothes shopping with us? It's not that I don't trust you sense of style, I would just like to have some female advice as well." I chuckled at her and said, "I don't mind if they join us love but I have a condition." I smiled mischievously, she just raised one eyebrow and looked pointedly at me before I continued, "I get to pick all of your underwear." I wiggled my eyebrow after and winked at her with a chuckle when she turned beet red and sputtered out "D.. Da... Damon." She then resigned herself to the fate of being my wife with a chuckle and shook her head before reaching for my cell phone. "How do I work this thing Damon, so that I may call Sheila?" I chuckled at my wife and took the phone from her while walking her through how to work it. 'Note to self, buy Opal a phone while out shopping.'

Opal POV

I managed to call Sheila with a little help from Damon, the call didn't last long and she agreed to meet us at the mall one town over with Bonnie in tow. After confirming the time to meet Damon and I left the boarding house so as to start our shopping trip. He took me out in his car which is a wonderous contraption that is like a horseless carriage and is a lot more comfortable than one. Damon couldn't stop laughing at me but I knew he meant no ill will by it. I was trapped in a tomb for 145 years there was a lot I had to learn about this century and he is willing to teach me. However, my husband is never going to be the type of person to pass up on the opportunity to poke fun at someone in jest. He is a ass, but a good natured ass that would kill or lay down his life for his loved ones. Jasper and Damon never hid who they were from me and I had no delusions of the kind of man my husband was. Even if it's been over a century since we were together I know who he is at his core and that's all that matters. The missed time will be covered and filled in the more time we spend back in each others arms. Damon glanced at me from his seat behind the steering wheel and asked, "What's going through that mind of yours my love?" I took his right hand and he brought mine to his lips and kissed it while he drove. I smiled and said, "I was just thinking of all the things I needed to learn about. I was also thinking about you and how even though we have been apart for so long you are still the man I married at your core. You are still my joke loving, brutally honest, fiercely protective and masterfully devious solider who takes no shit from anyone but me." He stilled for a moment before he kissed my hand again and nuzzled it for a second then said, "Damn straight, I won't lie and say shit hasn't happened in our century and a half apart, but I was always faithful to you even though I thought you were gone. I may have become harsher to those I don't trust and it is harder to gain my trust now, but I tried my damnedest to be a man worthy to hold your hand when I would meet you in the after life. I'm just glad I didn't have to die to get you back and we can enjoy our life together now that I have you and our child back I'm never letting go of you again." His heartfelt confession touched me deeply I nodded and squeezed his hand as a watery response was out of my mouth before I even had time to think of the words, "Same my love I have loved you since the day I saw you and I will continue to do so until I breathe my last breath." he chuckled at my response and kissed my hand again.
