Chapter 29 - Closer by Each Second

Well… Doyun wasn't wrong. Yejun knew he didn't have any excuses this time, so before he knew it, they were back on the fifth floor again. Alexei, the ghost that usually haunted this floor, was nowhere to be seen. Like, actually gone. Kinda weird… but whatever. Doyun, being Doyun, casually strolled down the hallway and went straight for the door. He tugged at the handle again like last time, but yeah, still locked. Expected. But it felt different being here now, knowing what had happened yesterday… Yejun slumped onto the floor, staring at nothing until he noticed Doyun drifting toward the bathroom door. Right… the bathroom was right next to the main door. How had Yejun forgotten that? He literally used to hang out there to skip class all the time… well, before Nari's words started echoing in his brain 24/7.

But just as Doyun reached for the bathroom door, he paused and motioned for Yejun to stand up.

"...Get up," he muttered, brows furrowed. "I hear something… inside?" Yejun raised an eyebrow, but stood anyway. He figured Doyun was just being paranoid, until he peeked inside and yeah—nope. He wasn't joking. Yejun squeezed next to him to get a better look. Two shadows. Definitely not students. They were tall, one had a beard, and both were wearing work clothes, like actual adult professional looking outfits. Yejun glanced at Doyun. Doyun glanced back. Both thinking the same exact thing: Sneak in and listen.

Just as Doyun started whispering a spell under his breath, Yejun yanked him back, whispering fast.

"Wait—don't they kinda look like teachers? Or is that just me?" Doyun blinked, then nodded. "Yeah, they do." "...Aren't teachers, like… not allowed in student bathrooms though?" Yejun had barely whispered that, but of course Doyun caught it in the dead silence. "That's true," he mumbled. "But who cares? Now c'mon, I wanna hear what they're saying. Bet you it's about the upcoming tests. I need to pass my classes. So move." Yejun side eyed him. What a weirdo. Couldn't he just… pay attention in class? Then again, Yejun never listened either, so maybe this was actually a smart move. If the teachers were talking about exams, they could just— Before he could finish the thought, Doyun grabbed his hand, pulled out his wand, and muttered a spell Yejun didn't catch but it sounded fancy. Way too fancy.

Then suddenly—

Poof. They were invisible. Not movie-invisible, where you could still kinda see outlines or floating accessories or something. Like, actually gone. Fully. Real life magic. Yejun barely had time to process it before Doyun dragged him inside the bathroom. As always, the vibe in there was just… off. Those tall, weirdly decorative windows that barely let in any moonlight, the old broken stalls that creaked if you looked at them wrong, and those overly shiny sinks with big mirrors that felt like they were watching you. Yejun hated this place.

But right then, it hit him

Holy shit

They were skipping detention. Past curfew. Hiding in a bathroom. Eavesdropping on teachers. Teachers who were definitely better at magic and could probably strip Doyun's spell in one snap. If they got caught? They were done. Actually cooked.

But whatever. Too late now.

The two men, teachers, now that Yejun could see more clearly—stood near the sinks, not saying much. It looked like they'd just arrived too. Finally, the bearded one spoke. And oh god. Yejun's stomach dropped. That was the director. Nope. Nope nope nope. Absolutely not.

Yejun was screaming internally. But outside? He looked chill. Stoic, even. Could've passed for a model in a horror movie. Meanwhile, the other teacher standing beside the director looked younger, but still older than them. Probably another staff member. Definitely a guy. And… was he smoking??

Yup. That was Mr. Rinh. Why is it always this dude?? Well yeah he was Yejuns favorite teacher, but he always caused trouble for Yejun too! Mr. Rinh exhaled a thin stream of smoke, his voice smooth and calm. "Well… not quite, actually—" He nodded once, like confirming something silently. "You see," he continued, "I'm sure you've heard about this, but listen… his magic's strong. Like, really strong. You know about what happened with Addams, right? Wild stuff." He started pacing around the bathroom, smoke trailing behind him. Yejun wasn't even focused on the words anymore. He was frozen in place. Because the director was walking.

And not just walking.

Walking toward them.

Closer.

Closer.

And even closer, Until—
