Chapter 7 - Scene 4

"There it is!" the swordsman says. He pointed to a strange structure at the base of the hill. The three of them have been skimming down the hill for several minutes.

THe structure is actually the ruins of a temple. Gold pillars and marble walls sat in pieces around a tall idol statue. Strange writing and art depicts a mighty beast with bird wings.

The three of the hunters rush down the hill. At the very center of the ruins is a floating item over a pool of glowing silver liquid.

The mage crouched to study the pool. "Be careful." she says. "This is mercury."

The swordsman winces. "We should be quick then."

Staring out over the pool, they realize how far the item is from them. At least twenty feet of space separates them.

"I can grab it." The lancer pulls the green gem from his pocket. "I have the LEAP skill at level 2. It can let me leap up to fifty feet."

"Cool." the swordsman gasps.

"But how will you get back?"

The lancer winces. "I didn't think that far," he admits.

The item at the center shines brightly. Silver-white light radiates from it. It comes embedded with red gems the size of US quarters.

"What if I use FREEZE on some CONJURED water over the pool?"

"Huh?" the swordsman says.

"I know conjure water. What if I freeze it long enough to let the lancer stand on it?" They stare at her curiously. "It will only work for a few seconds if I use the skill freeze space. But it should be long enough to let you reactivate leap."

The lancer bobs his head, weighing his options. "It could work."

"We need to be sure." the swordsman says. "If that stuff touched you, you could get sick."

The lancer scratches the nape of his neck. "That'd be a drag."

QUiet falls over them.

"And if you fall in, we wouldn't be able to get you out. I don't know LEAP, and a mage can't learn that skill."

The mage's eyes fall to the ground. She shuffles her feet out of discomfort.

"And if we can't get you out, we'll fail this. And if we fail we don't graduate."

"That would really be a drag."

"Yeah."

The mage perks up. "Then we need to do this right." the others turn to her. "Our futures depend on this moment. We've trained so hard to get here. We may be from different schools, but I think all of us deserve to graduate. Sponsor Adam wouldn't have chosen to be our sponsor if he didn't see potential in us!"

The Lancer smiles big. Leaning on his spear, he nods. "Hell yeah I worked hard to get here! If my epic story of my rise to the top ends with me drowning, I'd be pissed as hell."

THe swordsman grips his sword. "My family is depending on me. If I can't be a hunter, the higher paying job globally, I won't be able to provide the cushy life I promised them."

The mage puts her hand out. "Then let's do this. Together."

The swordsman puts his hand over the mages. Then they wait for the lancer.

He rolls his eyes. "God, why is everybody so cliche!" he places his hand over the other two's. "Anyway, let's do this."

"Right!"
