Chapter 63 - Someone to trust

Kate and Sarah exchanged glances and, without saying another word, left. Genevieve didn't make threats if she wasn't willing to carry them out.

"I need to talk to you, Genevieve." Anna said as soon as only Jenna, herself and Genevieve were left in the dining room.

"Make your confidences known to Jenna. For the time being, the two of us can't be friends." Genevieve said and sat down at the table, serving herself dinner.

"I don't know if I should talk about what you said to me with her." Anna bit her lip, hoping that Genevieve would understand her plight.

 Genevieve poured herself some wine.

"What do you want to know?" She asked after a few minutes of tasting the food.

Anna looked at Jenna, who, realizing that Anna didn't want to say anything around her, got up and left.

"I... The creature, monster child, she... What form is a werewolf born with?"

 Genevieve smiled amusedly.

"Do you want to know if you have a small dog in your womb?"

 "Do I?"

Genevieve put down her cutlery and picked up her glass of wine.

"You should get closer to Jenna. You can ask her these questions. She was born this way."

"I don't know if Adam can understand through her..."

"She's learned to block him out. What makes you think he's not hearing and seeing both of us right now?"

Anna felt an icy hand squeeze her heart.

 "Is he listening to us?"

 Genevieve looked at Anna thoughtfully.

"I shouldn't talk about this with you, but... The Alpha can't hear a werewolf woman if she's pregnant."

 "I'm not a werewolf."

"No. But the baby is. It prevents the Alpha from listening to you."

 "Why?"

"As I said before, Jenna will be able to explain it better."

"I cut my wrists and when I woke up, there wasn't even a scar." Anna said, wanting to understand, but was surprised when Genevieve suddenly stood next to Anna, lifted her up and slapped her face.

Genevieve let go of Anna and smoothed her hair.

"You stupid girl!" Genevieve hissed angrily. "Don't do that again until Adam returns. If you die in my care he won't be merciful to me!" Genevieve said and looked at the door. "You need Jenna's advice. The only thing I can do for you right now is keep your secret." She said and disappeared from Anna's sight.

Anna was left alone at the table. She got up, and with tears falling from her eyes, gathered up the plates and took them into the kitchen. Jenna was sitting with an apple in her hand and when she saw her, she stood up.

"What's wrong, Anna?" She asked, approaching and hugging Anna.

Anna let herself be hugged until she was ready to say something.

"Shall we go to my room? I need some information and... I'm sorry for the way I treated you today. You didn't deserve it."

"Don't worry about it. Let's go to your room."

 The two went upstairs together.

Jenna helped Anna into her pajamas and once she was in bed, she sat down next to her.

 "What's worrying you, Anna?"

"I... Genevieve hit me because I told her I cut my wrists..."

Jenna took Anna's hands and checked that there was nothing there and let go.

"You dreamed it. If you'd cut your wrists you'd be dead or at least scarred."

"I didn't dream it. You saw the blood on the scissors..."

"Anna, your mother was a very... special person. We still don't understand her mysteries very well, but Adam knows everything about his maternal family. Maybe you should talk to him about your doubts..."

"If Adam can send commands to the werewolves through telepathy, why would he call?" Anna asked strangely.

"Not everyone here is a werewolf, Anna. And it was his way of saying that he trusts your judgment in his absence."

 Anna started biting her nails.

 "Jenna. I think I'm pregnant."

Jenna remained silent, but as Anna didn't continue, she decided to ask.

 "Why do you think that?"

"Adam... He never used a condom with me, he didn't ask me to take any medication, and yet he said he didn't want to have children. Not with me, anyway, and..."

 Jenna smiled at Anna's conclusions.

 "Is your menstrual cycle late?"

"Yes. Ever since I started... You know." Anna said, turning red.

"You're in a house with a lot of werewolves and it's hard to sort everything out for you, maybe it's the effect of some drinking..."

 Anna looked at Jenna angrily.

"Do you think I'm not carrying a wolf cub inside me because I'm human?"

 Jenna laughed.

"Yes. Have you ever seen different species have children?"

 "Tomorrow I'll know."

 "Tomorrow?"

"I had a urine test and... I need four hundred dollars." Anna said, remembering the mercenary pharmacist.

"Have you gone mad? Four hundred dollars for a pregnancy test?"

"Eight hundred. I gave him four hundred dollars to do it discreetly, I don't want Adam to know. He'd kill me."

 Jenna frowned.

"So that's why you wanted to go to the pharmacy?"

"Yes. I didn't know how to tell you without Adam watching us."

"You don't seem worried about that now."

"Genevieve told me that the child prevents Adam from listening to us."

Jenna stood up and walked away with a frightened look on her face.

 "Does Genevieve know?"

"Yes. She's the one who told me."

Jenna moved closer again and touched Anna.

"I can't feel another life inside you, but... Even if Genevieve wasn't a werewolf, she's never been wrong when it comes to pregnant women..."

 "What does that mean?"

 Jenna smiled.

"It means that if you're really pregnant, your child doesn't want anyone to know."

 "So... Is it really possible?"

"Yes, Anna. A werewolf can have children with humans."

 "Why did you lie?"

"I didn't hear the child and... It's not natural for a human to give birth to werewolves. It's rare. That's why Adam didn't take precautions with you."

 "What do I do?"

"What do you want to do?"

"I... I'm not ready to say goodbye to Adam. He won't accept this child and... I don't think I want to be a mother either."

"Tomorrow, I'll go with you to the pharmacy where you ordered the urine test."

"Thanks... Can you lend me 400 dollars?"

"Yes. I can." Jenna said with a mysterious look. "Now go to sleep, Anna. You need to rest."

"Jenna! Wait! I saw Adam carrying a gun. If he hasn't gone to war..."

"Anna, he's not going to abandon the fight with Ryan without making his cousin pay for his betrayal."

"Is he going to kill Ryan?"

"No. He's going to make Ryan suffer."

"Do you feel pain with firearm projectiles?"

"It depends on the ammunition." Jenna said and left, turning off the light.
