Chapter 64 - Extortion

Anna woke up early the next morning to loud, insistent knocks on the door. When she opened the door, one of the men was ready to knock again and when he saw Anna he was startled and stopped himself. Anna. She couldn't resist and smiled amusedly.

 "Did something happen?"

"The phone will ring in five minutes." He said turning red and left.

Anna washed her face and ran to the office. She entered just as the phone started ringing.

 "Adam?"

The breathing on the other end sounded like relief.

"Anna... You mustn't leave the house until I get back."

"Why? I need to... Shop for lunch." She said, thinking of the pharmacist.

 "No. Send Sarah or Kate..."

"I sent them away." Anna said and became anxious.

"This isn't the time for jealousy, Anna." His voice sounded tired.

"It wasn't that, they..." Anna stopped herself. She didn't like Kate, but she didn't want Adam to kill her and Sarah... Sarah she wanted to have the chance to kill with her own hands one day. "They refused to obey my orders."

The silence on the other side was screaming.

 "What orders?"

Anna hesitated. She wasn't a good liar and feared that Adam would realize it over the phone.

"You let me call the shots. So trust my decisions."

 "I'll have them taken back."

 "No."

"That wasn't a request, Anna. They need to stay close to..." Adam was interrupted just as Anna heard a loud bang. Was it a bomb?

"Adam? Talk to me!" The call dropped on the other end and Anna sat up. She was in shock. Suddenly her mind was filled with an enormous clarity, as if it were a strong light that prevented any thought, any reasoning.

Genevieve arrived a few minutes later, wearing a robe and yawning.

"What's happening now?" She said and reached for the phone, put it back on the hook and looked at Anna. "Honestly, I wasn't born to be a nanny."

 Anna looked at Genevieve.

 "Adam's dead."

 Genevieve stared at Anna indifferently.

 "Go back to bed, Anna."

"Don't you care about him? I thought you loved him!" Anna started to get angry. It was her way of reacting to the pain of loss. She didn't say goodbye to Adam.

"Adam didn't die. Haven't you understood what it means to be a werewolf?"

"All was a werewolf and where is he now? All I've learned about you is that you're not immortal!"

Genevieve looked absent-mindedly at her own fingernails.

"Allister died because of you. It makes sense that the same would happen to Adam, but it hasn't happened yet."

 "All was poisoned."

"Any werewolf can sense when something isn't right with their own body. Allister was distracted, neglectful of himself."

Anna stood up and started walking towards the door, but stopped before she left and turned to Genevieve.

"How did you know I was here?"

"Your baby is very inconvenient. You should talk to him to stop calling me. I don't know why he chose me..." Genevieve said thoughtfully.

"My baby? You've gone mad, Genevieve. I can't be pregnant by a wolf, can I? Jenna's going with me to the pharmacy today to get my urine test and I think I know the result."

Genevieve rolled her eyes, now with an unmistakable gleam of interest.

 "Urine test at a pharmacy?"

 "It's a long story."

 Genevieve smiled.

 "Does Jenna know about this?"

 "Of course she does."

"I'm going too." Genevieve said and walked past Anna, leaving her perfume in the air and the light rustle of her dress.

Anna went back to her room.

 ...

The three women left escorted by a caravan of eight cars. Anna considered it an exaggeration, but Jenna and Genevieve didn't seem bothered by their presence.

When they pulled up in front of the pharmacy, they waited for the men to get out of the cars and wait, armed, to get out of the car.

Anna entered the pharmacy, but Jenna and Genevieve stayed outside to wait. She approached the pharmacist.

"I've come to collect my test results."

The man looked at her and took out an envelope.

"I want another six hundred dollars for this."

Anna felt lost. That was all the money she had in her wallet. Jenna had given him four hundred dollars and she had two hundred dollars saved.

 "That's not what we agreed..."

The man threatened to tear open the envelope.

"I have three options. I can tear it up, I can sell it to your father or..."

"Or you can resolve this situation with me." Genevieve's sensual voice sounded behind them. As soon as Anna turned back, Genevieve and Jenna were smiling amusedly. "Anna, Jenna will walk you to the car."

Jenna approached and dragged Anna out of the pharmacy.

"Let me back in, Jenna! I don't want Genevieve to kill that man. He's cruel, ambitious and dishonest, but he doesn't deserve to die because of it."

"Have you ever thought about how many young people he's extorted? He deserves death, yes. But don't worry. That's not what Genevieve went to do." Jenna said and opened the car door and Anna got in.

They were silent until Genevieve got into the car and it started to move. She handed Anna the envelope.

Anna opened it. Negative. She leaned back in her seat, relieved. Until Genevieve handed him four hundred-dollar bills.

 Anna looked at Genevieve inquiringly.

"The pharmacist apologized and returned your money." She explained as if it were obvious.

Anna kept the money in her wallet after trying to give it back to Jenna and her refusing to accept it.

"You were wrong, Jenna. Genevieve was wrong this time."

Jenna looked at Anna with a serious expression.

"We're going to a supernatural hospital, Anna. An ordinary scan can't detect a werewolf. You need a special ultrasound."

 "And how much is that?"

"It doesn't cost anything... By the way... A urine test like the one you had is no more than twenty dollars."

"Oh!" Anna realized that the man was stealing a lot of money from her.

"You're the stupidest human being I've ever met." Genevieve said when the car stopped, but smiled amusedly. "You could have claimed that you needed a gynecological exam and Adam would have sent you to this hospital, without suspecting a thing, because he knows that humans need this medical attention." She said and went downstairs.

Anna looked at the large hospital painted light green with a very unique and unobtrusive name. 'Adam Wolf Hospital'.
