At the hospital, she was seen immediately as soon as Jenna handed over her documents at reception. Anna Adam Lens. She didn't know that he had changed her name, but she thought it was polite. She passed other pregnant women, and a reception with patients and their carers. When they could no longer hear her, Anna whispered her doubts to Jenna.
"Are all these people werewolves?"
"No. We can't be that obvious, can we? This hospital is one of the most sought-after in the world. Our medical specialists are highly sought-after because they are superior in intelligence and practice high-tech medical knowledge. An advance that has not yet reached other hospitals. Sometimes we need to control ourselves. In ultrasound, for example, our devices are more effective and can detect a baby at a few weeks old, while humans can't see more than a speck."
"I'm going to see my baby?" Anna said and stopped in astonishment.
Jenna stopped and so did Genevieve, and they stared at her.
"What's the problem now?" Genevieve asked and pointed to a door in front of her, indicating the office.
Anna grabbed Jenna's arm.
"I can't do that."
"Maybe you're not pregnant, but there's no other way of knowing." Jenna said, trying to calm Anna down.
"You don't understand. I don't want to see. I can't. Because I don't want this... creature. Adam doesn't want to father a child with a human."
"You can close your eyes." Genevieve said quietly. "Come into the office, Anna."
Anna took a deep breath and passing them both, entered the room, and heard the door close behind her, but Jenna and Genevieve remained outside. She was alone with a doctor in a lab coat, who was pressing a few buttons on the ultrasound machine and when he saw her, he smiled and pointed to the gurney in front of her.
"Can you lie down, please?"
Anna obeyed quietly.
"Lift up your blouse and open your pants, Mrs. Lens."
Anna did as he said, still in silence. He stood up with a pot and rubbed a cold gel on her belly.
"Can you turn the ultrasound monitor the other way, please?"
"Mrs. Lens, if I do that, you won't be able to see your baby..."
"I don't know if I have a baby and if I do... I don't want it."
The doctor stood there looking at her in confusion.
"Is the father of this child Alpha?"
Anna turned red.
"Of course it's my husband's child!"
"I didn't mean to offend, Mrs. Lens... Does he know?"
"You're an animal, but you should have some ethics and not reveal your patients' confidential information!"
The doctor turned red and Anna knew she had offended him, but she was afraid. She had to put an end to all this, even in that room.
"Mrs. Lens, we 'animals' do value ethics, but I must inform my patient that no one has yet discovered a way to abort an 'animal', the child of a werewolf, from the womb."
Anna sat looking at him with a terrified expression.
"Are you saying that I can't get rid of this condition? If I'm pregnant, do I have to see this through to the end?"
"It's good that you understand so quickly."
Anna thought.
"Nobody told me, but... I need to know if I'm going to see a wolf cub on that screen."
The doctor laughed amusedly.
"It doesn't matter what you see. You don't want him, you don't need to see his birth. We have advanced resources to bring him into the world without affecting your health or his."
Anna lay back down.
"I want to see him." She decided.
He put more gel on her belly and spent a few minutes moving the device around, before pointing to the monitor.
"That's your baby."
Giovanna looked. He was still small, but she could see his little hands in a praying position and his whole body curled up, as if he wanted to hide. The doctor seemed impressed by the baby's rapid formation, and kept praising and commenting as he pointed at the screen. But Anna couldn't hear a word he was saying. Her baby was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen in her life. And she knew something disturbing at that moment. She would protect him with her life. Tears ran down her eyes. She needed to leave. She never thought she could love someone with such intensity. And she had to hide with her baby. She had to save him from his own father.
The doctor allowed her to get up.
"You'll forgive me for the way I spoke to you, but... I think Alpha might know a way to kill this child in my womb, am I right?"
"Yes. He probably does. When an Alpha assumes leadership, he naturally receives ancient knowledge from his Alpha ancestors. Mr. Adam slept for a week to assimilate all the information."
"I... This child in my womb, could it be born in any hospital, or is only a werewolf hospital prepared for it?"
"No. Any hospital, or even at home, this child can be born without any danger. The problem with ordinary hospitals is the lack of justification for what they see in the tests they carry out on babies as soon as they are born. The physiology of a werewolf has some glaring differences compared to humans."
Anna looked thoughtful.
"Please... Don't talk about this child with anyone."
"I won't."
"Thank you."
"One more thing, Mrs. Lens..."
"Anna. I won't be Mrs. Lens for long."
"Anna. You've got two werewolves outside that door, how do you intend to fool them?"
"Haven't they heard a word we've said?"
The doctor smiled.
"No. Using privileged hearing in a hospital is forbidden."
"Good. Now I have to go."
"I'd like to bring this child into the world, but something tells me you have other plans..."
"I need to protect this child."
The doctor nodded, as if he had understood everything with just one sentence from Anna.
Anna left the room and Jenna approached.
"Well?"
Anna smiled.
"It was a mistake. I've got worms." She said and her gaze met Genevieve's. Jenna believed her, talking about various recipes she knew for her problem, but Genevieve knew the truth.
