Adam soon returned with the doctor. They approached and the doctor winked at Anna, with complicity, and she returned it with a shy smile. Anna knew that he was acting like her friend, hiding Adam's pregnancy. She still couldn't understand how he didn't get suspicious, because whenever she looked, she could clearly see her pregnant belly.
"Are you feeling any pain?" The doctor asked, staring at Anna as if to warn her. She knew she couldn't take medication unnecessarily, and he was worried that her lies could put the baby's health at risk - after all, she was only a human carrying a wolf cub in her womb.
"I felt a slight pain in my head, but it's gone now."
"Good girl. I'm going to examine your eyes. Can you follow the pen, please?" The doctor said as Anna obeyed, and looked at the faint glow of the penlight.
He seemed satisfied and put the stethoscope to his ear to listen to Anna's heart. As soon as he had finished examining her, he looked up with his sympathetic smile. "I'm going to leave you here, just for another three hours or so... For observation. You're fine, you can go home and recover there."
"How long do I have to wear this cast? Did my leg break?"
"Actually..." The doctor said, looking sideways at Adam. The girl had arrived there with a broken leg, but while he was putting the plaster on, he realized that she was recovering on her own, but he finished so that Alpha wouldn't suspect that the girl was keeping a secret. "You had a slight sprain, but as you were very agitated, we thought it best to put you in a cast. But if you want, and you promise me that you'll rest, I'll have it removed today, before you leave."
"Yes... Please! This thing is already bothering me."
The doctor nodded and left. As soon as he had closed the door, Adam went to the seat the doctor was occupying.
"Anna... Perhaps it would be better if you kept the plaster... It'll stop you forgetting that you've sprained your leg and straining it too much." Adam said worriedly.
"I won't forget... Are we in the werewolf hospital?" Anna asked, wondering if they would travel that long to come to her rescue.
"No. We're close to home, at a roadside clinic set up for emergencies."
"But I've seen this doctor a few times at the werewolf hospital."
"He does volunteer work here at this clinic. That's why I decided to come here. And my hunch was right. Today is the day he comes to see the most needy."
"Very noble of him. I admire him more and more." Anna said sincerely.
"Don't admire him so much, or I might start to get jealous."
Anna smiled. She thought it was just a silly joke from Adam, but she liked it. He was handsome, and as handsome as the doctor was, he would never overshadow her feelings for Adam. However, it was all pointless. If she went through with her plans, Adam would never see her again. Not if he refused what she was going to ask him at that moment.
"Adam, I can't keep accepting Kate into our lives."
"I made a deal with her and you know it. You didn't mind when I told you. What's changed?"
"I think that mansion is too small for both of us. We're two women who want the same thing, the same man, and I think she can play dirty, just like she's done all her life with her client, your father, to win the big prize... She won't fight for you honestly."
"You don't have to fight for me. She'll never have me."
"So you're going to allow her to stay in the mansion?"
"I have to, Anna."
"Is what she offers you more valuable than me? Adam, we can have this child from the will, and anyway, the inheritance will always stay with you and..."
"Don't compare yourself to business, Anna. You're being childish. I'm not ready to see little blonde girls, with the tips of their red hair, running around the mansion. You're not ready either. You're immature. Maybe with Kate around, you'll mature a bit?" Adam said, starting to get annoyed.
"I'm eighteen, Adam. All the maturity I have is that of a teenager. I don't think I'm going to learn anything from her. And I don't want to. I want to be the opposite of her. I want to be a decent, reliable woman."
"Be the way you want to be. Just don't torment me with stupid, unfounded jealousy." Adam said, losing his temper and hurried away.
Jenna approached slowly.
"What are you doing, Anna?"
"Nothing. Adam did it."
"What did he do?"
"His choice."
"You mustn't let Kate upset you. She'd love to see what just happened here. You have to be smarter than her, Anna. Adam feels grateful, because he believes she saved his life. And she... She came along. Giving first aid on the way.
"How could you allow her to touch me?"
"We didn't know what to do, and she seemed in control of everything. She took urgent action... Neither Adam nor I could think straight. You're very important to us."
"Okay. But I don't want her to come back with us. I don't even want her to stay in this hospital while I'm here. Give me some time to digest the anger I'm feeling towards her. Tell that to Adam, before he comes back here with his future wife, believing that we can make up? How many cars came to bring me here?"
"Just three, which were already in front of the house. We didn't have time to think about risks. All we wanted was to save your life."
"Go with Kate to the mansion. I want you to search my room and make sure there are no scorpions under the sheets."
"Don't get carried away."
"It's just a figure of speech. I left... A cell phone I stole from one of the Werewolves, inside one of the drawers. If I'm not there, nothing will stop Kate from getting her hands on it, and Adam will kill me. Remember, Adam doesn't forgive any betrayal."
"What do I say to the boss to justify going home without you?"
"Tell him I taught you how to make a special broth and that you'll prepare it for when I arrive, because it's the only thing I feel like eating right now."
Jenna wondered. The girl was confused. Bewildered. She felt pity.
"All right. I'll go." She said sadly. "Take care. Don't fight with the boss on the way." She recommended and left.
Anna was sad, because this was her friend's farewell. She would never find that cell phone, because it was fried from her creative mind, and she regretted that it had been a lie, her last words to Jenna. Tears began to burn in her eyes, but Anna wiped them away before they rolled down her cheeks. She needed to be strong now. For herself and for her baby. She would miss Jenna, after all, she was her best friend... She would also miss Genevieve. She would miss the mansion and its comfort, and the werewolves and the maids and the cooks... but she knew that what she would miss most in her life was Adam. But he made his choice. And although he and neither Jenna nor the mansion would ever see her again, Kate and Sarah would. She would keep her promise to Sarah.
