Chapter 125 - Deep Sorrows

Kate saw when Jenna went out to the kitchen, as she had been watching them since Adam arrived.

She took advantage of this and sat down opposite him. You couldn't see his eyes, but you could sense that he wasn't well. And even though she feared it was a bad time, she needed to support him, whatever he was doing. She believed it was something about Anna, because after talking to Jenna, he left in a hurry, looking lost. Maybe something bad had happened to her, and that would be the gift Kate would sell her soul to hear.

"Adam... I want you to know that you can count on my support, in everything. I'll always be there for you.

"I appreciate that, Kate. But... Today I intend to have my meal only in Jenna's presence... I'm not belittling her, but I have business with her."

"Don't you want me to make something for you?"

"Yes, I do. Go to the kitchen and tell the cooks and my men that your lunch will be served on the balcony table today. You must tell Caricatura that the kitchen door that leads into the house must not be opened under any circumstances once Jenna has served our food.

"Are you putting me with the peons to eat outside?"

"They're the ones who should be outraged at sharing a table with you. Sometimes, Kate, you're very inconvenient and arrogant with your phrases. Haven't you realized that those men, all of them, are my family?"

Kate stood up and prepared to say something, but he was quicker.

"It's only for lunch. I'll talk to you later. Now go." He said, dismissing her and took a sip of his drink, feeling the burning in his throat with pleasure.

Kate stared at him for a few seconds, but did as he asked, and then went after Sarah. She knew that they were no longer friends and that the woman had a desire for revenge against her. But she also knew that Sarah would do anything for extra money. She was a person who had no loyalty to anyone but herself. She was a person who had her price. And that could serve Kate very well. And she ended up thinking that Sarah was a necessary evil.

 ...

After a few minutes, Jenna brought her and Adam's meal. She heard what Kate said and knew that he wanted to speak to her alone. She only regretted that it was a useless move on his part, as she couldn't reveal more than Anna's father had allowed. He had his chance. She still didn't understand why Adam had let the girl go. Anna wouldn't have resisted his request to stay. Anna loved Adam, and that was as clear as daylight.

Adam began to eat slowly and uneasily.

"Jenna, do you know where they're staying?"

"Yes, but I'm not authorized to give you that information. I'm really sorry, boss. You had your chance. Did she refuse to come back to you? I thought that when she looked into your eyes she would run into your arms. I've never seen a love like yours and I confess that I feel all werewolves have lost with your break-up.

"I saw Anna, but I didn't let her see me."

"Why not?" Jenna asked in surprise.

"When I got there, her back was turned. At no time did she look sideways or backwards."

"She wasn't expecting you, boss. I told her the location to...

"I know you didn't. But that made it easier to watch her and think about things..." Adam spoke without emotion and Jenna realized sadly that he was back to being the tough, ruthless boss and that he would deal with Anna that way.

 "And what have you decided?"

He was thoughtful for a few seconds and started eating again.

"She was very thin... She must have been in situations I can't imagine. And looking at her, she looked like a child traveling with her father... But none of that compares to the pain I'm waiting to see in her eyes. It's good that she suffered. I felt... reciprocated. She wasn't well, while I acted like a weak human in front of my werewolves. I feel more shame than pain. Anna made me turn into a cowardly creature and that will never happen again." Adam said it as if it were business, but his countenance didn't show his pain, and he didn't hide the tears that flowed down his cheeks. "I realize how rash I was with her. I should have waited for her to mature. I felt at that moment, looking at her, that Anna must have been imagining herself married to me all along. She didn't see how dangerous it was to have a deeper connection with me. I don't think she would have minded the risk, but I should have talked to her more. A naïve, innocent girl. I took her and turned her into my private whore. And she didn't know that's how I saw her and worse, how I referred to her when I was with friends. I didn't introduce myself, because I think it's only fair that now she has a chance to mature. I'll leave her alone for a few years, and then I'll come and get her. I'll let her live quietly with friends her own age for now. She deserves that. And when she thinks she's free and will live a lifetime without shackles, I'll come along and take everything away from her. I want her to make lots of plans and envision a bright future for herself, so it'll be a lot more fun when I throw her in the green house and watch what happens. My mistake, Jenna, was treating her like someone special. I offered her things that no other woman could get with me."

 Jenna stared at him paralyzed.

"What if Anna doesn't agree to come back with you? You won't be able to bring her back from Scotland against her will." Jenna didn't even want to think about what he would do if he found out that on top of everything else, Anna had taken his son and was hiding the child from him.

"I never gave her that option. Anna belongs to me, and I have the resources to pick her up and bring her kicking and screaming from Scotland to here, in Nevada, without anyone interfering."

"How long will you give her?" Jenna asked sadly. She felt Adam manipulating her will at that moment. She would never be able to warn Anna or Henry about Adam's plans.
