"What's up, Jenna? Have you heard from Henry?"
Jenna hated feeling like the bearer of bad news when she saw the agony in Adam's voice.
"Anna's father found her and asked me to let you know."
"He's bringing her back to me?"
"She didn't want to come back. I'm sorry Adam, but she's going with her father to Scotland."
"Where did he find her?"
"She was in England."
"Did she have a lover there?"
"I find that difficult, Adam. She was living in a poor hotel and feeding on broth."
"Where did her father warn you about?"
Jenna turned red, but she couldn't tell him that she had known where Anna was for a week, even if she hadn't been found by Henry yet, but she would give Adam the chance to convince Anna. She missed him too and knew that he needed her like roses needed the sun."
"He called me from the airport here in the United States. He made a stopover here in the States, in Nevada, but Anna doesn't know that."
"Which one, Jenna?" He asked, putting his hands on his head impatiently.
"At McCarran's."
"Do you think they're at the airport yet?" Adam asked distressed, but didn't wait for an answer and ran into the house, where he grabbed his wallet and made phone calls. He had never behaved so anxiously. Caricature was waiting for him inside the car, and was startled when he opened the front door and sat down.
"Be quick, Caricature. Accelerate the car mercilessly."
And so Caricatura didn't spare the car's accelerator and arrived in less than fifteen minutes at the building where Adam's helicopter was located in Nevada. Adam opened the car door and ran out, even before the car came to a complete stop, and ran to the elevator. Back at the penthouse, the pilot was already waiting for him and without much talking, they got into the helicopter and headed for the airport.
Adam didn't know what to do when he arrived at the airport and saw Anna, with her father, and some other people. They were carefully holding a parcel, and Adam stood still as he noticed her hair, a little shorter than when he had been with her. It seemed like years since he had seen her, and Anna was still the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He felt the tears running down his face. Neither of them looked back; if they had, they would have seen him for sure. Adam couldn't help noticing that Anna was thinner, but very well dressed. He was prevented by pride and his promise to Henry from approaching. He knew that if he got anywhere near where she was at that moment, he would do something stupid, like get down on his knees and beg her to stay. No. He wouldn't introduce himself to her yet. He would let her live a few years without him, and then he would bring her back.
Slowly, Adam turned to leave the airport and thought about it. He took out his cell phone and called a detective who lived in Scotland and sometimes did work for him. She loved Maxwell, but she couldn't trust any of the Lens family around her. She had a devastating effect on men and Maxwell would not be immune to her charms. He needed to stay informed about her every move. After the usual greetings, Adam got straight to the point.
"Arnald... my wife will be arriving in Edinburgh and I want you to follow her and inform me of everything you see. For three years, you'll spend twenty-four hours watching over her. You will have at your disposal all my resources, all my fortune and all the support you need."
"I'm going to the airport immediately, boss."
"Do it." Adam hung up, wiped his face with a handkerchief in his pocket, and returned the same way he had left the house. Caricatura was still waiting for him in the parking lot, and stared at him in disappointment when he saw him alone. Adam walked over to him and got into the car without saying anything. He opened the glove compartment and took out his sunglasses. He knew his eyes were swollen from crying so much in the building's bathroom. He promised himself that he would never give his heart away again, and that he would bring Anna back and make her pay for all the suffering she was causing. Something he didn't know. That pain, he had never felt before. He was sure he would find her again. But he hoped she would be a little more mature, because he had to confess that perhaps that had been his mistake. He had forced her into a relationship with him when she was still very young. But in a few years' time, she would be ready to occupy the empty side of the bed again. But this time, he wouldn't let her get away. Nor would he be so generous. She would live imprisoned in that mansion for the rest of her days.
Caricatura didn't ask any questions, but he knew by intuition that as he drove, his Alfa was deciding Anna's fate. He was already regretting it, because from the look on his face, he was going to make her suffer a lot. He couldn't even tell his companions, because they would try to save her right away, and that would be suicide, since Adam would know immediately that the Alpha had turned everyone into werewolves. And he didn't know when the boss would bring her back. He was just sure that he could. Adam was the most determined man he knew. And he wasn't used to defeat.
They arrived at the mansion, and Jenna went to meet Adam. He jumped out of the car, walked towards her at a brisk pace and stopped right in front of her. Without saying a word, he removed his glasses and Jenna pulled him into a hug. She knew that this wasn't the time for him to tell her what had happened, because if he'd come back alone, it was because his plans hadn't worked out. In any case, she would know from Anna's father.
He put his glasses back on as soon as they let go of each other, and she took him with one arm around his waist to the office, where she poured him a vodka and ran to the kitchen to prepare a quick meal for him.
