Chapter 137 - The Value of a Promise

Maxwell looked curiously at Anna, while all the men stopped and stared at her without fear.

"I didn't hear your apology to my husband."

Maxwell's face immediately turned red and he had a feeling that something bad was going to come out of this confrontation.

"Let them go. I don't need that. Let's forget it..." He said between his teeth, obviously annoyed, but Anna seemed possessed by a bad spirit.

"We're waiting." Anna said to the men, ignoring Maxwell's plea because she wouldn't let them humiliate her husband again. She knew that if she allowed them to get away with everything, it would happen again.

The men looked debauchedly at Maxwell.

"Excuse us, sir." The other two spoke at the same time, debauched, and turned to walk away from her, but the man who had been brash and arrogant remained silent.

Anna looked at them with a raised eyebrow.

"May I ask what the joke is?" She asked fiercely.

"The joke is on you, Anna. Here in our country, despite the symbolic kilt, it's usually the husband who wears the pants at home. We don't hide behind our wives." One of them said and everyone laughed.

No one, not even Anna, knew that Maxwell was calm and even happy about the men's audacity, because he had just found what he needed to celebrate and toast his position as a father. He would kill those two men.

"You two can go, but first I want to know something..." Anna said and walked over to them, whispered something in the ear of one of them, who quickly whispered it back in her ear and they both left. Anna then turned to the other security guard and looked at him questioningly.

"Go to hell, bitch! I'll never apologize to that ridiculous little cushion." The man said and walked away.

Anna stood by and watched him drive off in the direction of the mansion, very angry. But her thoughts cleared when Maxwell took her hand and smiled happily.

"Are you going to tell your father about the pregnancy?" Maxwell asked as they entered the foyer door and heard a great hubbub coming from inside the house.

"I think it's best to wait. I want to know first if it's a boy or a girl, so that we can tell you all the news at a party. I want this pregnancy to be different from Ian's."

 Maxwell looked at her mysteriously.

"You have no idea how different it will be, Anna."

Anna stopped and looked at him suspiciously.

"Max... You said it like it was bad."

He seemed to come out of his thoughts. He had remembered some of the things his mother had said about his pregnancy and was very excited.

"It's going to be different because I'll be by your side the whole time." He said what she needed to hear.

"Do you prefer a girl or a boy?"

"I prefer him to be perfect. But if it's a girl, we'd have a couple."

"I think so too." Anna said and stood on tiptoe to give Maxwell a quick kiss on the lips. And even then, he had to bend down for her to reach him.

They arrived in the dining room, where the table was huge, and Anna saw with extreme displeasure what Maxwell had told her about the powerful boss. At the table were several men fawning over her father and calling him godfather. She knew they were mobsters. But what irritated her most was the sarcastic smile on the face of the man who had humiliated her husband outside. He wasn't a security guard. He was one of her father's godchildren.

When Anna's father saw her, he stood up and greeted her and Maxwell. He had left seats next to him for both of them. Jenna was with the others, and Anna wondered where her son was. She sat down and asked the first question.

 "Where's Ian?"

"He's with the nanny in the garden park. Don't worry, he's safe." Jenna said reassuringly.

Anna then chatted politely with everyone at the table, while Maxwell didn't seem at ease and barely touched his food. Before they had finished their meal, Anna looked at her father, and he, feeling watched, turned to her.

"Daddy... Who is that man sitting to Jenna's left?" She asked quietly, so that only he could hear.

"He's a newcomer. I don't like him because he's very arrogant, but I had to invite him because he's the son of one of my allies who couldn't make it because he has the flu."

 "I want him dead."

Anna's father stared at her with wide eyes.

 "Why is that, my child?"

"He disrespected Maxwell. He humiliated him." Anna said and told him in detail what had happened.

Her father listened quietly, and then told her to distract Maxwell after dinner and meet him in the basement. Jenna would help her get there. She would be waiting for her in the office. Anna agreed, and during the day, she let the mobsters flatter her son, and even her and Maxwell. They knew how important Maxwell was and treated him with deference. This pleased her.

At dinner time, they gathered at the table again and Maxwell, saying he hadn't slept the night before, apologized and left. Anna went after him.

In the bedroom, Maxwell got into the bath and Anna helped him. But that help didn't go unpunished. Maxwell became aroused and penetrated her hard, standing under the shower.

Exhausted, they lay on the bed and Maxwell closed his eyes. Anna waited for his breathing to even out, to make sure he was asleep, and got up. She hurriedly put on her clothes and went to the office, where Jenna was waiting for her. Anna was so excited that she didn't notice the silence in the house.

Together, they went down to the basement. She wasn't surprised when she saw the man who had disrespected Maxwell, tied to a chair, his face bloodied, with several men around him.

Anna's father approached her and handed her a gun.

 "You must avenge your husband."

Anna raised the gun and the man closed his eyes, tears streaming down his face. She then remembered the promise she had made to Maxwell, that she would never kill in this country, and that she would only kill the two people who had done her wrong in the United States, and lowered the gun.
