Chapter 162 - Abandoning a Profession

"Are you looking for that, Genevieve?" He asked quietly. "I saw it through your eyes, Kate taking it." He explained and started looking at Genevieve's privacy. "WOW! Genevieve. I've never heard you say such... vulgar things." He said and threw the phone at her, who caught it in mid-air. "What were you planning? Are you going to meet your lovers together? Please don't let me miss something like that." He said with a smile and turned to Genevieve. "Since you're back, why don't you visit Ryan in the green house? To reminisce about old times? I hear he's been very... horny."

Genevieve looked at the door and then at Adam.

"So he won't care if the ass he's sticking his penis in is hairy. You should try it, Adam!" Genevieve said and ran out of there urgently, heading for the solitude of her bedroom.

Adam cracked a rare smile and turned to Kate.

"Maybe it's time you stopped being a werewolf, Kate. I'm starting to get interested in your secrets..."

"You'd be bored, Adam. I don't need to be a werewolf for you to know what I think. Just come to my room at night and watch me and Caricature."

 Adam grimaced.

"No. I already see it through Caricature's eyes... But haven't you ever thought about being one of us?"

 "Is that an offer?"

 "What if it was?"

"My answer would be no, but I'd still be grateful for you offering me something like that."

"I have yet to meet a human who knows our secret and doesn't want to be one of us."

"I want to die as a human, Adam. I love you, but that doesn't change what you are. You are cruel monsters. Your souls won't be saved."

 Adam became pensive.

"All right. I'll never force you to be what you don't want to be, but you'll live here, forever. I don't want to kill you."

 Kate stared vacantly at him.

"Do you need to tell me anything else?"

Adam looked at her for a few more seconds, then left without saying anything.

Perhaps, if Kate were a werewolf, he would have seen through her eyes that the message had been sent to Jenna and then deleted.

Kate sat back smiling. For once, she had fooled the powerful Alpha.

 ...

The phone rang five times before someone answered.

 "Jenna? Where are you?"

"Henry, Adam's going on a trip to pick up Anna."

"When does he plan to do that?"

"In three days he leaves the United States."

There was a sigh from the other side.

"How did you know?" He asked after a while.

"I got a message on my phone from Genevieve, telling me."

 "Where are you now?"

"I'm with the kids, at the mall. Ian, you want to see Harry Potter at the movies."

"I'll send a few more men to reinforce security."

"And what are you going to do with Adam?"

 "Nothing. Let him come."

"Are you going to warn Anna?"

"No. She has unfinished business in the United States. It's about time she avenged her mother. If I tell her, Maxwell will try to hide her."

"That won't be good for anyone. Anna mustn't go back to that place. Adam is dangerous and he won't forget the many ways he's planned to punish Anna over the years..."

"It's going to be a bloodbath, and I have no doubt about that, but things have to happen. Anna, to this day, hasn't developed the mist inside her. And that's why I want her to go back with him as soon as Adam leaves. To his side, where she belongs."

"She loves Maxwell. Her place is with him and his children. You can't decide these things for her, Henry. Maxwell's mother will kill you if she finds out you've helped Adam."

"I'll take care of my protection. Don't worry. If Adam doesn't get what he wants, he'll kill Anna and the children. Perhaps a little help will quell his rage once he finds out what we've all been hiding from him. Let's not forget that he's Alpha, Jenna. A kind of werewolf that hasn't been born for over a hundred years and we don't know much about what they're capable of. Adam is unpredictable."

Jenna then remembered Ian. It was so easy to forget that he wasn't Maxwell's biological son...

"You're right. I'll go home as soon as the movie's over.

 "Do it."

"Henry... Don't you think you should cancel Ian's party?"

"I wouldn't know how to explain that attitude to Anna."

They hung up and Jenna looked around. She would miss those children, that country, the house she lived in and everyone she lived with, because she had no illusions. Adam would change that reality as soon as he got there, but she understood that she would never see the children again if she didn't become a sigma and run away. And she needed to do that immediately. She couldn't say goodbye."

 ...

Maxwell hurried into the hospital, spotted his sweet Anna sitting in the reception room, and went over to her. She looked at him with swollen, red eyes. He felt like hanging the culprit for his beloved's pain. He sat down next to her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders.

 "Explain to me what happened."

Anna said, giving him all the details.

 "And what's Beth's situation?"

"I don't know. They don't want to tell me."

"Wait here and I'll find out some information." Maxwell said and got up, walking over to the receptionist.

Anna sat watching, but realized that Maxwell had authority even outside the courtroom, because the woman, to whom she had begged many times to say something, refused, picked up the phone, and after a few minutes, a doctor appeared, talked to Maxwell for about ten minutes, and then left. Maxwell then returned to his side.

"The projectile didn't hit any organs... She'll be fine. But Anna, you're right. You were the target."

"Why are you so sure of that?"

"Because the doctor said that if Beth were facing forward, the projectile would probably hit her in some organ, which he said, I didn't pay attention, would kill her before help arrived..."

 "Maxwell, I've made a decision."

 "Say it."

 "I'm giving up my studies."

"But it's your career, Anna. Why would you want to abandon your dream?"

"It's not my dream. It's Dad's dream, and yours. My dream is to see everyone I love protected."

"But it's good to have a career..."

"I don't want one anymore. With just the money Dad sends me every month, I can live comfortably for all the years of my life. I've had enough, Maxwell. I'm not going to put the lives of innocent people at risk any more."

"I won't try to convince you. You're still young, and if one day you want to go back to school, I'll make sure there are no obstacles."

"Thank you." She said, running her hand gently over his face. "There's something else I want you and Dad to do."
