Chapter 83 - A New Canvas

After an intense week dedicated to the meticulous planning of forthcoming projects, a more sanguine outlook for Irlam begins to crystallize. The blacksmiths, having embraced their role under the aegis of Baltazar, have at last arrived.

With the semi-automation of the steel forge now accomplished, only the execution of requisite tests and training sessions for the adept craftsmen remains.

Upon divulging the innovative method slated for steel production, I discerned a degree of initial reluctance in their demeanor. In his sagacity, Baltazar took the time to expound meticulously, elucidating that, notwithstanding the already high quality of the world's steel, the proposed method holds the potential for further refinement.

Achieving a purity that will surpass even the acclaimed steel of Lugunica.

The process commenced auspiciously, leaving only the anticipation of the initial results as the next step. Concurrently, Rem and Otto have been diligently orchestrating the acquisition of necessary identifications.

An impressive number exceeding a hundred plaques have been forged, with the aim of welcoming Irlam's denizens and assigning them their position within this novel structure.

Today is Wednesday, signifying that we find ourselves at the midpoint of the week. In my office, in the company of Emilia, who has been tirelessly collaborating in administrative management since then.

Though her assimilation has been gradual, she has steadfastly devoted herself to comprehending my methods and contributing her perspicacity, grounded in the observations of the inhabitants.

Her endeavor to lighten my burden is undeniable and deeply appreciated.

"You have made remarkable strides," I remark as I peruse the report, she has presented regarding the gunpowder factory, which has undergone revitalization under his supervision.

The imminent implementation of semi-automation in the gunpowder factory is on the verge of commencement.

To ensure that jobs are not lost, we have decided to relocate some individuals to other gunpowder factories that will also be established. On this occasion, our intent is to produce gunpowder with higher concentrations of the fire's essence, seeking to enhance its effectiveness.

As for the steel, its arrival is imminent, although the preparations and forging process will be more intricate.

We have opted to acquire various steel ingots from the realm, which will be employed in our unique forging process.

This step is crucial to elevate the quality of the resulting steel, as the use of steel in the manufacturing process will contribute to an end product of excellence, undoubtedly surpassing the previous material.

"Are the examinations scheduled for today?" Emilia inquires, to which I affirm with conviction.

On this Wednesday, it is the day when Crusch and Luan will undergo their examination. Initially, challenges arose from the soldiers, but surprisingly, the grievances were not directed toward Luan but toward Crusch.

It appears that in the brief time Luan has been in our midst, she has earned the respect and admiration of all. In contrast, Crusch has demonstrated exceptional prowess in all domains, inevitably evoking a certain sense of envy.

A remarkable tableau, if I may express it so.

Crusch entered as a mere cadet but made the decision to abstain from utilizing her magical abilities. She resolved to act as an ordinary soldier, proving her merit from that perspective. Personally, I harbor no doubts about her capability; she could easily triumph over a Wolgarm chief.

This is Crusch Karsten, and I lack any apprehension concerning her.

Tomorrow, we will commence the documentation process, but today, oh, today is the day to witness a spectacle. Alongside Emilia and Beatrice, we make our way to the venue where the examination will take place. It is approximately three in the afternoon. The examination site is situated in areas that will not undergo expansion.

We entice a pack of Wolgarms and observe their behavior. Given their territorial nature, they tend to remain in the same location. We provide them with sustenance in a regular manner to ensure they do not stray.

The examination itself involves five soldiers engaging in sequence to defeat one of these Wolgarms, accompanied by a few others from the pack.

A trial poised to assess both individual prowess and collective cooperation.

Crusch and Luan appear primed, exchanging words in an animated tone as the army's members commence assembling. By their side stands Alsten, accompanied by a retinue of ten soldiers.

As we draw near, Alsten takes notice and greets us with enthusiasm.

"Miss Emilia, General Marco, Miss Beatrice," Alsten salutes with a subtle smile gracing his countenance.

The military's spirit is at its zenith after the culmination of numerous achievements. Emilia and the army's endeavors have left an indelible mark, instilling a palpable sense of pride among all members.

Despite our limited strength, we stand with just over twenty-nine individuals due to losses suffered in the confrontation with the cult.

Nonetheless, I am confident that new recruits will soon join, a prospect that does not give rise to any concern. I position myself before the two valiant candidates and, with a solemn expression, announce:

"We shall commence the promotion examination."

The military attire adorns Crusch impeccably, as always, but Luan also captivates with her presence. The contrast between the ivory hue of her hair and skin against the ebony tone of her military uniform is notably elegant.

Both maintain serene expressions, demonstrating readiness for any challenge that may befall them. While my influence in their selection may have curtailed others' opinions, I am certain they will substantiate their worth.

"The trial will involve confronting a Wolgarm alfa, accompanied by forty to fifty lesser mabeasts," I solemnly inform both.

Elite battles necessitate the skill to both lead and fight. Those designated as elite must demonstrate competence in both domains, rendering leadership prowess crucial.

That is if you don't believe you have the strength to face it on your own.

In this context, Luan will assume leadership of a squadron comprised of those who did not pass the standard examination. Emilia, Beatrice, and I will be vigilant, ready to intervene if the situation requires, preventing things from spiraling out of control.

On the other hand, Crusch will opt to undergo the examination alone, showcasing her individual prowess. This is a strategy I employ to quell any potential complaints or doubts. Although she remains largely unknown to others, that will soon change.

According to her own words, Crusch will not employ her sword or magic unless deemed necessary. She will carry a kukri and her rifle with a bayonet, tools she deliberately chose.

This choice instills even more confidence in her.

While I am not entirely aware of her abilities, the potential that the mana within her body represents could provide significant advantages. I am eager to witness her actions on the battlefield and discover how she will fare. In a respectful tone, I call her attention:

"Cadet Crusch."

As she requested, I omit her surname. Crusch is no longer just Crusch Karsten; she has transcended the labels that bind her. Her dream has not vanished; rather, it has evolved. Our gazes intersect, and in that moment, we share a mutual understanding.

Her desires are clear, and determination reflects in her eyes.

"To thrash that beast." Precisely that.

Before us unfolds the forest, its entrance guarded by an advanced array of pyroxene crystal matrices that prevent the emergence of mabeasts. The crafting of these crystals requires Yang magic, and in that regard, we have the assistance of Roswaal.

Once created, it is only necessary to recharge them with mana, as Emilia does. However, their effective range is limited, justifying the use of several of these crystals together.

Mabeasts have proliferated in the forest like a plague, depleting natural resources and causing significant damage to the surrounding ecosystem. Recently, the appearance of a different type of mabeast has been documented, but this situation is still in the research phase.

We move along the expanse of the terrain, with a vigilant squadron while I keep Crusch at the forefront.

Emilia is a constant presence in these examinations, ensuring that everything unfolds as it should and ready to address any issues that may arise.

I elucidated to both the significance of Crusch to me, how she lost everything due to Gula, and how they must treat her with kindness, trusting that she will adapt swiftly. Evidently, my words had an impact, as both Emilia and Crusch have forged a friendly bond.

Regarding Beatrice, though she is cautious with newcomers, I am confident that she will acclimate over time.

"Cadet Crusch, advance to the designated area," I instruct. Before the crystal matrix stretches an open field with approximately ten meters in diameter. Yet, it is not merely a smooth field; it is filled with strategically placed obstacles.

Pieces of logs, clear areas, debris, and other elements are arranged to create a varied and challenging terrain. Crusch takes her initial position, ready to commence the trial.

I issue the command: "Release the bait."

Mabeasts are drawn to living beings emitting mana more intensely, making them an attractive target. We keep the Wolgarm chief close, but it is crucial to carry out this step to ensure the proximity of the mabeasts.

I employ my Murak magic to hurl the deer, placing it about seven meters from Crusch.

"Will you allow her to do it alone, General?" Alsten inquires, displaying concern.

Soldiers observe with a blend of anticipation and excitement. We form but a small congregation, no more than ten individuals, with Captain Oslo also in attendance. All are eager to witness the skill demonstration about to unfold, orchestrated by Crusch.

"She engaged in hand-to-hand combat with me. If I may opine, her strength is not something to be underestimated," I remark, avoiding mentioning that she surpasses my own strength, as that would be counterproductive.

"Watch and learn," I add, making it clear that I have full confidence in her ability and have prepared everything correctly.

The bait, a deer, begins to emit cries when wounded, swiftly drawing the attention of the mabeasts. Crusch takes cover behind a log, though it is evident she doesn't need it for her strategy.

She gracefully leaps over the obstacle and charges towards the mabeasts, leaving everyone in awe.

As the Wolgarm mabeasts detect her, they start howling, alerting others in the area. Crusch's agility and determination are striking; her skill goes beyond the ordinary.

A resounding bang echoes through the air. A precise shot travels straight to the head of the Wolgarm that was howling, immediately silencing it.

Crusch closes the distance rapidly, facing two of these creatures. With an agile maneuver, she unsheathes her kukri and launches an attack while the Wolgarm attempt to bite her.

Crusch beheads one of them and, in a swift motion, impales the bayonet into the head of the other, bringing an end to its existence.

"That is..." murmurs of astonishment fill the air. While everyone expresses their surprise, I smile, aware that this is just a small glimpse of her capability.

With a quick motion, she cleans the weapons from the blood of her fallen foes. She remains serene, displaying patience as a more challenging situation approaches.

Growls multiply, and in the blink of an eye, red eyes begin to gleam among the bushes. The massive paws of the Wolgarm mabeasts emerge simultaneously, surrounding her with ease.

The issue with the Wolgarm lies in their number. One alone is manageable, but in quantity, they become formidable.

Crusch has only four bullets remaining, meaning she must carefully manage her ammunition during the impending confrontation.

Reloading in battle is intricate, so she must find an opportune situation.

The Wolgarm demonstrate cunning and begin to attack in coordination. They form a circle around her, while others climb trees seeking opportunities for surprise attacks.

At that moment, Crusch chooses a direction and darts in that path, taking advantage of the fact that some Wolgarm jumped toward her. With agility, she shoots two of them and, with a kick, pushes away the one closest.

She moves away from the center of the attack to create space for a reaction.

Swiftly, wielding her kukri, she assaults one of the Wolgarm, cleaving its head in half with a seamless motion. In a matter of seconds, she dispatches more than seven of these creatures, leaving everyone astounded.

"Incredible!" exclaims an excited soldier.

"She is truly astonishing!" adds another.

In an instant, the atmosphere shifts from envy to excitement for Crusch. I smile with satisfaction, sharing the enthusiasm of others as she continues to dismantle the mabeasts.

"Crusch..." Emilia seems surprised. Despite their conversations, this is the first time she has witnessed Crusch in action.

Crusch exhausts her last bullets to take down three approaching mabeasts. Seeing they are overmatched, the mabeasts retreat. Over time, they have learned tactics from generation to generation, with the survivors passing their knowledge to the next.

She seizes moments to reload, tearing through everything in her path with her kukri when she cannot use her firearm. In the end, only a few remain. The ground saturated with blood, creating an ominous atmosphere.

The way they reproduce is still not fully understood, differing from common living beings in many aspects.

Crusch seizes a moment of respite to reload her weapon. She moves to the center of the area, positioning herself on a log for a better vantage point.

Surprisingly, she doesn't seem even remotely fatigued.

"It should have appeared by now, shouldn't it?" Alsten remarks, indicating they await the appearance of the chief Wolgarm.

Those who have borne witness to these trials are already acquainted with some of the behaviors of the mabeasts. Though circumstances may vary, certain aspects remain constant.

From the ground, the trunk begins to ascend. Crusch gracefully retreats with a nimble leap, precisely as the trunk splits in two, propelled by a pillar of earth. Dust rises into the air, and from that cloud emerges a figure.

What would typically be a harmless pet now regards Crusch with profound animosity, growling as its eyes gleam in intense crimson.

A brown puppy, its ordinarily tender appearance transformed into a hostile gaze. Crusch aims her weapon, but the dog employs the ground to generate earth-shattering explosions, deflecting Crusch's shots.

The mabeast packs have learned; their communication ability surpasses that of common animals.

They likely use their horns as antennas to transmit information. I have been investigating this peculiarity, although the results have not been conclusive. This is partly why I sought to obtain the whale's horn.

The Wolgarm mabeasts begin to emerge in increasing numbers. Typically forming packs of twenty, this figure may rise depending on circumstances.

The bodies of the cultists seem to be a preferred source of sustenance, possibly contributing to their population growth. Over fifteen of these creatures emerge from the bushes, encircling her.

Our stance delineates the sole sanctuary within the vicinity. Crusch, in an unwavering demeanor, observes the mabestias, exhibiting no trace of motion. Soldiers stand in silent contemplation, cognizant that this ordeal has proven more formidable than customary.

More mabestias surface, yet Crusch remains steadfast. Abruptly, a gunshot disrupts the still air.

A resounding "Bang!"

Crusch fires upon the approaching Wolgarm with nimbleness as they encroach. With agility, she strides directly toward the pack's leader.

As earth pillars emerge, Crusch discerns a subtle distortion in the ground preceding each pillar's appearance. She astutely employs this observation to deftly evade the pillars, even positioning herself atop one.

Bowing at the precise moment, she seizes the elevation of the newly formed pillar to strip away the cover from the Wolgarm leader, unburdening it from hindrances.

"Crusch is..." I exclaim in astonishment, witnessing her ascend a few meters.

She takes aim with her weapon and fires just before her descent.

A resounding "Bang!"

Nevertheless, the Wolgarm leader metamorphoses into an even more imposing entity, absorbing the shot with only a minor injury. The pillars around him dissipate, and the leader advances toward Crusch, endeavoring to bite.

"Take this!" Crusch exclaims, brandishing the kukri and hurling it directly at the mabestia's eye.

An explosion of blood and a harrowing cry ensue the impact.

Crusch descends to the ground, repelling another Wolgarm with a forceful kick. In a swift motion, she plunges her kukri into the neck of a beast, hurling it towards the pack, impeding their advance.

The Wolgarm congregate around their leader, gearing up for a coordinated assault. My smile endures, for deeming this trial comparable to facing one of the three great mabestias would be imprudent.

Crusch is proving her mettle.

She positions herself in front of us, distancing herself from the mabestias. With unwavering determination, she asserts, "I am Crusch!" while steadying her rifle. "This is nothing to me."

Mana begins to accumulate, a blue light forming around her rifle as the beasts regard her with hostility. Even the largest mabestia appears somewhat intimidated by the gathering power but advances fearlessly.

Crusch continues to gather mana, summoning winds around her. Wind blades emerge, and everything around her ascends, compelling us to seek refuge.

"She's a wind user!" they exclaim, marveling at the unfolding spectacle.

But Crusch is more than that. The accumulation of wind blades and the intensity of the light reach their zenith. As the beast and the Wolgarm advance, Crusch creates pillars in front of her to distract them.

However, at this moment, nothing seems capable of halting their progress.

"It's over!" she shouts, squeezing the trigger.

A resounding "BANG!"

A thunderous gunshot reverberates, imprinting its echo in the ears and hearts of all in attendance. A sphere of wind-blades unfolds across the field—its advance, though gradual, undeniably potent.

Upon colliding with one of the earth pillars, it disintegrates into countless fragments, allowing the sphere to continue its relentless course.

The beast desperately erects more pillars to impede it, but to no avail. The bullet precisely reaches its head, causing a crimson explosion and disintegrating its skull.

A cloud of blood ascends, followed by the beast's body plummeting to the ground, crushing nearby Wolgarm.

Only part of its torn neck remains, expelling blood.

Crusch appears scarcely fatigued, barely sighing as she watches the remaining Wolgarm flee in panic, having lost their leader.

"The examination has concluded!" I proclaim with a satisfied smile.

Soldiers stand astonished by Crusch's feat, and understandably so. However, that is inconsequential. Even if her memory has been altered, reality is malleable.

It can be reconstructed.

"She was part of our forces, a lieutenant commander," I declare, capturing everyone's attention. "She fought alongside me against the Archbishop of Gluttony, who stripped her of her name and, consequently, her presence in this world. She was entirely isolated, but I remember her."

I fix my gaze on everyone with determination.

"I remember her because I am the sole individual capable of eradicating those accursed members of the cult," I declare with fervor imbued with disdain. "Hence, I implore you to embrace her. Her proficiencies surpass adequacy, and her exceptional leadership skills are undeniable."
