Chapter 20 - The Ashes We Rise From

Aftermath of War

The smell of blood and smoke lingered in the air, heavy and suffocating. The bunker had become a tomb—a place where both physical and emotional wounds would take time to heal. The walls, once solid and unyielding, now felt fragile, cracked by the events that had unfolded.

Olivia stood by the window, gazing out at the empty horizon, her thoughts swirling like the storm clouds gathering in the distance. It was over. Jace was dead, but the victory felt hollow. A thousand emotions churned inside her, none of them comforting.

Damon stood behind her, his presence a steady anchor in the chaos of her mind. His hand rested lightly on her shoulder, a silent reassurance.

"We did what we had to," he said, his voice low but firm. "He was a threat to everything."

Olivia nodded, but the words didn't reach her heart. Yes, Jace had been a danger, a shadow that had loomed over them. But killing him—ending his life—had come at a cost. A cost she wasn't sure she was ready to face.

"Why does it feel so wrong?" Olivia whispered, her fingers gripping the cool glass of the window.

Damon stepped closer, his hand now resting on her back. "Because it is wrong. There's no glory in taking someone's life. But sometimes, it's the only way to protect what you love."

Olivia turned to face him, her eyes searching his. "Do you think we've lost ourselves in this?" Her voice was small, almost afraid to ask the question aloud.

"No," Damon said, his expression softening. "We're still here, still fighting. We haven't lost each other." His gaze hardened slightly. "But the world we knew is gone. We'll have to build a new one."

The Long Road Ahead

The next few days were a blur of activity. With Jace's death, the fragile peace in their world was shattered, and the vacuum of power that followed was nothing short of chaotic. The men who had once served under Jace began to scatter, some pledging allegiance to Damon, others slipping into the shadows, unsure of where to turn next.

Olivia knew this wasn't over. The fight had just begun.

"Are you sure this is the best plan?" Cassia asked, her eyes narrowed as she studied the papers spread out before them. They were sitting in one of the estate's back rooms, the once-lavish space now a war room. The mood was heavy, the air thick with the weight of decisions yet to come.

Olivia's fingers tapped rhythmically on the table as she stared at the map in front of them. "It's the only plan we have. We strike first—before they can regroup."

Damon, standing at the far end of the room, had his arms crossed, his jaw tight. "We can't afford to wait around, hoping they'll come to us. The next move is ours."

Cassia raised an eyebrow. "And you trust them? The men who followed Jace?"

Olivia's eyes narrowed. "I don't trust anyone right now. But we don't have a choice. We need their loyalty—or we'll be dead before the end of the week."

The Betrayer Within

The next few hours were filled with tension as Damon and Olivia met with the former members of Jace's inner circle. Each one came with their own agenda, their eyes wary as they stood before the new leaders of the empire.

Olivia had expected resistance, but the betrayal still stung. One by one, the men who had once pledged loyalty to Jace now found themselves at a crossroads. Some bowed their heads in submission to Damon's rule, while others seemed less willing to give up their allegiances so easily.

As they moved through the tense negotiations, Olivia couldn't shake the feeling that one of them was planning to betray them.

She wasn't wrong.

The Ambush

It happened quickly. One of the men, a low-ranking enforcer who had played his part well, turned on them the moment their backs were turned. Gunfire erupted, and the room erupted into chaos.

Damon's instincts kicked in first, his body moving in a blur as he shielded Olivia from the initial barrage. But the attack had been well-coordinated, and within moments, they were surrounded. The trap had been set, and they had walked right into it.

"Get down!" Damon barked, shoving Olivia behind a heavy table as bullets whizzed past them.

Her heart hammered in her chest, the sound of gunfire ringing in her ears. She hadn't expected this—hadn't anticipated that the man they had trusted most would betray them so easily.

"They knew," Damon muttered, his voice dark with realization. "Jace had planned this from the start. He knew we'd come here."

"Damon, we need to get out of here," Olivia said, her voice trembling as she pulled herself closer to him.

"We're not leaving yet," he said, his eyes burning with fury. "We finish this now."

The Final Stand

It was a fight for their lives. The gunfire, the shouts, the chaos—it all blurred together as Damon and Olivia fought side by side. Every move was calculated, every strike deadly.

Cassia fought with them, her movements swift and precise. The enforcers who had once served Jace were dropping one by one, their plans unraveling in the face of Damon's unrelenting fury.

But even in the midst of the battle, Olivia couldn't shake the feeling that the worst was still to come. As she took cover behind a pillar, her eyes scanned the room, searching for the one man who had yet to show his face.

And then she saw him.

The Dark Truth

There, standing in the doorway, was the last person she ever expected.

Her breath caught in her throat as the man smiled at her, a cold, calculating grin.

"It's over, Olivia," he said, his voice smooth and mocking. "You never stood a chance."

It was Damien's brother—Sebastian
