Even though the battlefield wasn't far from the morgue, no one would ever suspect Kifune. I mean, come on—who would associate a quiet, unassuming corpse collector with ninja battles? It's like suspecting the janitor of being a secret agent. Too unrealistic.
And Kifune was totally fine with that. If Sarutobi Hiruzen found out about his little "hobby," he'd probably be sent on dangerous missions or thrown onto the front lines of a war. And let's be real, Kifune wasn't exactly ready for that. He'd rather stay in his cozy morgue, collecting corpses and leveling up safely.
Speaking of corpses, Kifune looked at the two bodies lying on the wooden beds, one glowing red and the other green. He grinned, but his smile was so forced it hurt his face. "If I don't get something good from these two, I'm gonna lose it," he thought. The rare experience card he'd used earlier was valuable, and he needed to make it worth the investment.
Feeling the last bits of power from the experience card still lingering in his body, Kifune decided not to waste it. He started practicing in the morgue, trying to absorb as much of Miura Ikko's skills as possible. After all, a Jonin's experience was way beyond what a Genin like him could dream of.
He'd taken down an elite Chunin in just a few breaths earlier, and he wasn't about to let the rest of the card's power go to waste. Even if he could only learn a little, it was better than nothing.
As the power finally faded, the system notification popped up:

Kifune's eyes lit up. "Yes! Bonus points!" Five extra attributes were like finding free ramen after a long day. Totally worth it.
Feeling proud of himself, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a cigarette he'd snagged from Asuma earlier. He lit it up, took a deep puff, and then—oh no. He remembered he was in the morgue. Smoking around corpses? Not cool.
He tried to hold it in, but swallowing cigarette smoke is like swallowing a mouthful of wasabi. He stumbled outside, coughing and gagging like he'd just eaten a bad bowl of ramen.
After recovering, he flicked the cigarette ash and muttered, "If I'm gonna benefit from these corpses, I gotta respect them first." He took one last puff, put out the cigarette, and went back inside to clean up the mess from the earlier fight.
By now, it was almost midnight. Kifune had made up his mind: no sleep until he'd opened his "loot boxes." He dragged over a creaky rocking chair, sat down, and started gently rocking back and forth. The chair made a loud "creak-creak" sound that would've scared anyone passing by. Imagine hearing that outside a morgue at midnight. Spooky, right?
But Kifune was chilling. "Ah, the life of a salted fish is so comfortable," he thought, leaning back.
Finally, the clock struck midnight. Kifune jumped up like he'd won the lottery. "It's time!" He washed his hands, splashed some water on his face, and even fixed his hair. Gotta be respectful when you're about to loot a corpse, right?
He walked over to the glowing green corpse—the one that had tried to steal the other body earlier. "Brother," Kifune said, placing a hand on the corpse's chest, "we had no beef. I just wanted to touch the corpse quietly. You didn't have to go all ninja on me. Now look at you—dead. Why'd you have to be so impatient?"
He activated the system.
[Fail!]
Kifune blinked. "Seriously? After all that?" He glared at the corpse. "Don't make me throw you into the sea to feed the fish, buddy."
He tried again.
[Success! Obtained Rock Ninja Huoshi's Obsession!]
Kifune tilted his head. "Huoshi's Obsession? What's that? A coupon for Iwagakure ramen?" He scratched his head, confused but intrigued. Whatever it was, he'd figure it out later.
