Chapter 2 - The First Trimester

The excitement of the pregnancy test had worn off, and reality was setting in. Jane's body was undergoing changes she never thought possible. Morning sickness had become her new norm, and fatigue had turned her into a couch potato. Simple tasks left her drained, and the smell of food made her stomach churn.

As she lay on the couch, Mark sat beside her, concern etched on his face. "How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

Jane sighed, "I'm just so tired and sick all the time. I feel like I'm losing myself in this pregnancy."

Mark nodded sympathetically, but Jane could sense his uncertainty. He didn't understand what she was going through, and she couldn't blame him. How could he? He wasn't carrying a tiny human that was slowly taking over her body.

"You're doing great," he said, trying to reassure her. "You're strong and capable."

Jane smiled weakly, appreciating his effort. But deep down, she wondered if she was truly ready for motherhood. Was she prepared to put someone else's needs before her own 24/7? The thought terrified her.

As the days went by, Jane's emotions became increasingly unpredictable. One moment she'd be fine, and the next, she'd be overwhelmed with tears. Mark tried to be patient, but she could see the frustration in his eyes. He didn't know how to fix this, and she didn't expect him to. This was her journey, and she had to navigate it.

One evening, as Mark was cooking dinner, Jane stumbled into the kitchen, feeling particularly queasy. Mark immediately turned off the stove and guided her to a chair. "Sit down, I'll get you some crackers," he said.

Jane appreciated his kindness, but a part of her felt like she was a burden. She didn't want to be treated like a fragile egg; she wanted to be seen as a strong, capable woman who just happened to be pregnant.

As she munched on crackers, Mark sat beside her, holding her hand. "We'll get through this together," he said.

Jane smiled, feeling grateful for his support. But as she looked at her changing body, she couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. Would she ever feel like herself again? Only time would tell.
