--------

Luz is walking home after an exhausting day of shopping on the eve of her graduation party. Her home is on a plot of land on the outskirts of the city, so the walk home is long, but the day is so beautiful that she decides to walk. For some unknown reason, she feels the need to move her feet and feel nature.

On the outskirts of the city where she lived, you could see roads flanked by large hills covered with dense vegetation and tall trees. Luz walked lost in her thoughts, making her way along the road with two large bags in each hand. She was already regretting not taking transportation. Her arms were heavy and burning. "I don't know what I was thinking when I decided to walk," the young woman lamented aloud as she pouted. The girl was lost in her thoughts when she felt something strange. She heard what sounded like the whimpering of a small animal, a puppy.

The whimpers were tragic, and it was clear that the creature was suffering. Luz couldn't remain indifferent to the pitiful cries. She stepped off the path she was walking on and turned her full attention to the sound. She listened carefully, as she couldn't quite pinpoint where it was coming from. She knew it wasn't close, but she decided to try anyway. At the side of the path, there were a lot of thorny bushes laden with blackberries. She dropped her bags and carefully pushed the branches aside, making her way through without completely emerging victorious from her feat, as she suffered large bruises that left the skin on her hands and neck exposed, covered in long red lines as a result of her skin rubbing against the thorns.

Luz usually wore long-sleeved sweatshirts and loose pants, all very baggy because she was ashamed of her body. It was only because of this that she did not end up with more injuries, as her clothing protected her. When she managed to free herself, she saw the tall pine trees in front of her. She became nervous when she heard the small animal let out its pitiful howl again. ignoring her own injuries and following the sound carefully. She went deeper into the forest, noticing how the pine trees planted by logging companies were being replaced by native trees such as araucarias and larch trees. She could smell the scent of nature filling her nose, filling her soul with a pleasant sensation.

As she searched for the source of the sound, she wondered what could have happened to the puppy.

"Did it fall off a cliff or was it attacked by a wild animal, a puma perhaps?" This worried her and filled her with fear, but then she convinced herself that it was impossible, as pumas lived much further inland and a small puppy would not be able to escape their attack. Convinced of this, she gathered her courage to continue, as her desire to help the animal was greater than her fear.

She followed the sound, walking in its direction, but it still seemed far away. As she continued deeper into the forest, she saw trees that were getting bigger and taller, with enormous trunks that would take two or three people with their arms outstretched to embrace their circumference. She noticed dense foliage that blocked the sunlight every few feet. As she wandered in her thoughts, she followed the animal's whimpering. It seemed to be closer, but she still couldn't find it.

"Don't worry, I'm coming to help you," she said aloud to comfort the puppy she still couldn't find.

As she spoke, she felt the puppy stop crying. Without its whimpering, it would be even harder to find it.

She stopped for a few minutes, listening for any sound, even the slightest, such as footsteps on dry leaves. When she heard something, she continued in that direction. She walked about fifty meters and spotted a puppy that looked like a small dog, perhaps a young one, which meant it was a large puppy but already showing signs of what it would look like as an adult. with its hind leg caught in a bear trap. She exclaimed, "But they don't use those traps in Chile! There are no bears in this country, and they are absolutely prohibited for hunting pumas or any other species!"

As she got closer, she could see the beautiful animal more clearly. It looked like a Siberian dog puppy, but the distribution of the white and gray colors of its fur made it impossible to recognize it as belonging to that breed. It looked more like a small wolf because of the shape of its paws and snout. It was almost black, but with white tufts on its head. It had a beautiful pair of two-colored eyes, one blue and one brown, staring at her.

"It can't be a wolf, they don't exist in our nature!" She had only seen them in zoos.

When she got close enough, she noticed that the puppy looked at her with surprise and curiosity, directly into her green eyes, but then it took a defensive stance and began to growl.

"Calm down," Luz repeated. 'Calm down, I won't hurt you, I just want to help you.' She moved her hands very slowly to reassure the animal.

She used to speak aloud to express her thoughts, which earned her more than one nickname, such as crazy, chatterbox, and weirdo, among others at her school, but she didn't care and just laughed when she realized she was talking to herself and remembered fondly that her mother did the same thing.

Luz repeated constantly, "Poor little animal, you must be in so much pain. What idiot would think of setting traps in the forest? Calm down, calm down, I'll help you get free and take you to the vet to get your wounds treated."

As she spoke, the puppy stopped growling, tilted his head, and raised one of his ears as if to say, "What is she saying?" Then he lowered his head and tucked his tail between his hind legs.

Luz moved closer until she reached him and said, "Please don't bite me, I just want to help you."

She put her hand on the animal's back and stroked it tenderly, which seemed to calm him down. Then she looked at his injured paw and, noticing his rear end, exclaimed, "Well, well, well, you're a girl!" She frowned as she looked at the bloody paw caught in the trap's blades. "I hope it's just soft tissue and you haven't broken any bones. I don't want them to have to amputate your leg."
