Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 – “The Underworld’s Deal”

The air was thick with tension as Sophie and Aiden arrived at the sleek, black car that would take them to the meeting. Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that this was one of those moments where there was no turning back. The car glided through the streets of the city, its tinted windows obscuring the world outside. The skyline, once a symbol of hope and ambition, now seemed like a maze of glass and steel that threatened to trap her.

She sat in silence, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Aiden was unusually quiet beside her, his face a mask of concentration. The man she had married — a man who had once seemed like an unfeeling stranger — was now someone she depended on more than she cared to admit. Their relationship, though still fragile and marked by moments of distrust, had evolved in ways she hadn't anticipated.

Aiden's voice broke the silence, his tone steady. "Are you ready for this?"

Sophie turned her head slightly to glance at him. "I'm not sure there is such a thing as 'ready' when it comes to Eli Stone."

Aiden smirked, but it lacked the warmth it usually carried. "True. He's not exactly someone who deals in certainties."

Eli Stone. The name itself sent a shiver down Sophie's spine. He was a man who controlled the shadows of the city, a figure who lurked in the darkest corners, pulling strings in both the legal and illegal sectors. He wasn't a man to be underestimated, nor one to be trusted. Yet, here they were, heading straight into his domain.

The car slowed as it approached an unmarked building nestled between two towering skyscrapers. The building was nothing like the polished glass structures that dominated the skyline. It looked old, unassuming, but Sophie knew better than to judge by appearances. This was the kind of place where deals were made in whispers, where loyalty was as fleeting as the smoke in the air.

The door opened before they could knock. A tall, broad-shouldered man stood in the doorway, his cold gaze sweeping over them before he stepped aside. Without a word, he gestured for them to enter.

Sophie followed Aiden inside, her heart racing. The dimly lit hallway seemed to stretch on forever, its walls adorned with dark paintings that only added to the oppressive atmosphere. As they walked, Sophie couldn't help but feel like they were walking deeper into a web, each step taking them further from safety.

At the end of the hallway, they reached a large, ornate door. The man knocked once, then opened it without waiting for a response. Inside, a vast room awaited them, its walls lined with bookshelves, its floors covered in expensive rugs. A massive desk sat in the center of the room, behind which Eli Stone himself stood.

Eli Stone was a man of imposing presence. In his mid-forties, he had the kind of face that was hard to read — sharp features, piercing blue eyes, and a jawline that could cut glass. His black suit was perfectly tailored, his black hair combed back with a care that suggested both vanity and control. He didn't need to say a word to command attention. His mere presence in the room made it clear that he was the one in charge.

"Mr. Hart," Eli greeted, his voice smooth but carrying an undercurrent of authority. "And Mrs. Hart." He gave Sophie a slight nod, his eyes lingering on her a moment longer than necessary. "I trust the drive was comfortable?"

Aiden's expression remained unchanged. "We're here, Eli. Let's get to business."

Eli's smile widened, but there was no warmth in it. "Of course. Let's get to the heart of the matter, then."

Sophie stood to the side, watching as Aiden and Eli exchanged words, their voices low, their gestures deliberate. This was a negotiation, and every word, every pause, every look could tilt the balance. She wasn't sure if she was more nervous about the deal or the man across from her.

"I understand your interest in taking down Voss," Eli said, leaning back in his chair. "And I assume you're aware of the power I hold in this city. If you want to succeed, you'll need more than just ambition, Aiden. You'll need the right people, the right resources."

Aiden nodded, his jaw tight. "We're willing to pay for your help. But we need to know where your loyalties lie."

Eli's smile didn't falter. "Loyalties?" He laughed softly, a sound that echoed unnervingly in the room. "I have no loyalties. I have interests. And right now, those interests align with yours."

Sophie felt a chill run down her spine. This wasn't just about money, she realized. Eli was in this for more than just a financial gain. He had his own reasons for wanting Voss gone, reasons that might not align with Aiden's.

"You want to take Voss down because he's in your way," Sophie interjected, her voice steady despite the unease that clung to her like a second skin. "But what if his fall doesn't benefit you the way you think it will? What if you end up with less than you have now?"

Eli's gaze snapped to her, a flicker of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Mrs. Hart, you've got a sharp tongue for someone so young. I like that." He paused, considering her words. "But you underestimate me. I always know what I'm doing."

Aiden's hand brushed Sophie's, a subtle gesture, but one that didn't go unnoticed. His grip tightened ever so slightly, as if to remind her that they were in this together. They had to trust each other now more than ever.

"We're not here to play games, Eli," Aiden said, his tone hardening. "We need your full support. No half-measures."

Eli leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "Then we have a deal. But remember, nothing is ever truly free. There's always a price."

Sophie's pulse quickened as she realized just how much she had just stepped into. Nothing was ever free with people like Eli Stone. But right now, they had no choice. They needed him, whether they liked it or not.

"Deal," Aiden said, extending his hand.

Eli's smile returned, colder than before. "We'll make sure you're properly equipped, Aiden. But remember, if you fail, the consequences will be… unpleasant."

As the deal was sealed, Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that they were now deeper in the underworld than ever before. They had made an ally, but the cost of that alliance could be more than they could bear.
