Cherreads

Chapter 15 - 5

She turns, and with hatred fueling her insurmountable rage, extends her arm. The electricity speeds down her arm, curling around it like a coil. Once it gets to her fingertips, it lunges forward, branching out and attacking whatever its master wishes it to. Blue streaks of electricity light up the entire forest, finally providing illumination to an otherwise haunted place.

She hears something scream in pain, and before long, wings beating as the figure retreats. She's done it…for now. But she wasted a substantial amount of energy, energy she didn't have the luxury of wasting. Her chest pounds, and she can feel her body shutting down. She's on borrowed time now. A move like that typically would have gone smoother, but so many factors were playing against her.

Fighting through the pain, she continues to run. She reminds herself of what she is carrying. Even death won't stop her; she will see her mission completed.

But, as if the Divines themselves were looking down upon her, a house comes into view. It sits away from the forest, amongst the grassland that this land seems to relish. It appears quite quaint, surrounded by so much nature. Similar to a beacon to a weary traveler, providing a rare type of hope. Or, to some, it could be just another sign of the continuing wilderness, an absence of civilization.

Yet, it is sanctuary no less, and she stumbles towards it, trying her hardest not to fall to her knees. She taps the wooden door irritably, her eyes darting to the sky. Nothing appears in the dimly lit sky, but it would be foolish of her to be so easily deceived by what her eyes could not see. Her calm visage begins to twist as the shrieks grow louder, a whimper starting in the back of her throat. The shrieks are not yet upon her, but she can already feel their crushing weight.
