While the alpha was waiting for her, I was still sitting silently on the bench. He stood and read my diary. His gaze glided too intently over the lines. As if completely maniacally, and this made me extremely uncomfortable.
In general, it is unlikely that anyone would feel comfortable when their diary is read, but, having somehow stepped over it, I decided not to take the diary for now.
Moreover, I started keeping it literally before the meeting with Carter. And I stopped writing anything in it when our paths diverged.
Therefore, the diary was mostly about our relationship. And I admired him there. Only at the end of the diary about hatred. About what he did to me and what I experienced? There were even places where the ink flowed from my tears.
About twenty minutes passed before Carter got another call. They had already gotten the information from the precinct. And I had no idea what the alpha had been told, but during the phone conversation, his face clearly expressed insane rage.
It even seemed that he was about to smash the phone to hell and then destroy the world.
But, throwing the phone on the bench, Carter slowly turned that look on me, from which I felt something much worse than hell on my skin.
"Give me her number. I want to talk to Lily," he walked towards me, and I was seriously scared, because Carter emanated something akin to abnormal obsession. "Where does she live? Tell me the address."
"I can't. She doesn't want to see you," I backed away, leaning my back against the tree. "You remember what you did to her, right?"
"I'll still find out where she is," the alpha leaned his hand against the tree next to my head. Thus trapping me.
There was some truth in his words. I doomed myself to this when I told him my name and what my father's name was.
"You will find her, but it won't be easy even for you, since Lily's parents got divorced and now she has not only a different last name, but also a different first name," I clenched my teeth.
A nervous shudder ran through me, but I decided to get to the main thing. "But... Okay. I'll tell you her current name. If you want, I'll even persuade her to meet you today."
"So she's in this city?" He caught that part of my words. Even doing it in such a way that I got scared. Why the hell did he need me?
"I didn't say that, but... I came here because I need your help. Promise me that you'll give it to me, and I'll make sure that you talk to Lily today."
"Do you think I'll look for her for a long time without you?"
"If you don't help, I'll ask her to hide so that you'll look for her as long as possible."
Carter's gaze flared. Making it clear that I was already walking on the edge of a blade, but the palm of which he rested on the tree, clenching into a fist, the alpha said: "Arrange a meeting with her before noon and I will help you with whatever you need there."
Carter did not even ask what kind of help I needed, and I jumped at it.
"Do you promise?" I asked immediately.
"If I see her before noon, I promise."
My chest felt a little lighter. If Carter helps with the test, everything will be normal. Miranda will not be imprisoned, and perhaps I will still be able to be with Jad. In any case, I wanted it.
But for some reason, I still felt uneasy admitting to Carter that I was Lily. True, he would find out anyway. And this way, I would at least get some benefit.
"Okay… You promised," having slipped to the side under Carter's arm, I went to my bench and took my wallet out of my backpack. I pulled out my documents from it. They were in the form of cards. With photographs.
I handed them to Carter.
"Why do I need your documents?" he asked, lowering his gaze to the top card. But then holding his gaze on it. Or rather, on the name "Lily Garcia". But, at the same time, in the photo I am already sixteen years old. I am almost the same as now.
"I am Lily. I promised a meeting, and here it is. Before noon. I fulfilled my conditions."
Carter looked at my documents for several unbearably long seconds. Then, raising his head, his gaze slid over my face. What I saw in his eyes, I was not able to understand, but it was something powerful. Something that passed through my consciousness like a burn and invisibly pierced my skin with needles.
"You…" Carter's heavy, hoarse voice burned my nerve endings, and I instinctively squeezed my documents tighter. I didn't like the way he said it and, even more so, the way he looked at me.
There was something about it that caused a caustic shudder, as if in contact with red-hot steel. And on an intuitive level, it inevitably scared me.
Especially the way Carter's gaze, with his no longer human eyes, slowly slid over my face. Examining me in a way he had never done before. In a way that seemed completely impossible. Absorbing every feature of my face millimeter by millimeter.
As if devouring them altogether. Focusing on the lips, eyes, cheeks, and cheekbones. Then I lowered my gaze and looked at the neck. At the same time, the feeling that something was happening to Carter was becoming more and more persistent.
True, I didn't understand what exactly yet. Only looking at his face and catching a strange facial expression, in which it seemed to me that there was still disbelief in the alpha. Powerful.
And that it was generally on the verge of a breakdown, but every time Carter wanted to tell me something again, he looked at me. Even more devouring with his gaze. Sometimes wincing as if his head was pierced by a suffocating pain.
