The apple, freshly sliced into crescent wedges, gleamed with crisp, juicy flesh. Tiny droplets slid down its surface, leaving faint trails on the wooden table.
Lily, delighted, clutched a slice in her small hands.
Before biting, she paused, stood on tiptoes, and raised the apple to James's mouth.
"Here, brother, you first," she said sweetly.
"Thanks, little Lily," James replied, smiling as he took a bite.
The apple was crisp and sweet, bursting with refreshing flavor. It brought a moment of pure joy, cooling the hot summer day.
The siblings sat by their cottage door, each with an apple slice, eating slowly. They watched passersby in Ironhaven and the old trees swaying in the breeze.
"Brother, when will I grow taller?"
"No telling," James said.
"I wanna be tall soon," Lily muttered, perched on the high threshold. Her short legs swung back and forth, unable to touch the ground, as she nibbled her apple.
Each swing matched a crisp bite—one swing, one chomp, repeating rhythmically. Her toes traced arcs in the air, as if time had slowed in this tranquil moment.
Summer, a little girl, and an apple… a scene of simple beauty.
To James, it was heartwarming, though discipline was needed. He lightly tapped her forehead.
"Eat quietly, stop fidgeting," he said.
"Brother, you're so mean!" Lily pouted but stilled her legs, focusing on her apple.
Soon, they finished. James ate most of it, as Lily's appetite was small.
Still, her belly bulged. Leaning lazily against James, she mumbled, "Your fault, brother. Take responsibility. Let me rest."
Exhausted, her voice faded into soft snores.
"Kids, huh? Out like a light," James muttered, shaking his head. He gently carried her on his back to the bed.
He laid her on the quilt, propping her up to avoid indigestion from her full stomach.
"Troublesome kid," he said, smiling.
As she slept, her innocent face looked like a peaceful cub's.
Sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the bed.
James sat nearby, fanning her with a woven leaf to keep heat and mosquitoes at bay.
"She's too attached," he thought. "When I go to the arcane conclave next year, she'll cry buckets if I leave her."
He chuckled, picturing it.
Originally, James planned to join a sorcery academy alone, but Lily's clinginess worried him. He couldn't leave her with strangers.
"Maybe we go together," he mused. With his Celestial Affinity, he was confident the academy would agree.
[Time flows on]
[You awaited the arcane conclave and proposed Lily come along. She agreed, thrilled to stay with you.]
[One month, two months, three months…]
[A year passed—your fifth in this arcane world. The conclave began.]
[Sorcerers descended, some on flying artifacts, others weaving spells in the air. They cast a grand detection array over Ironhaven to find magical affinities.]
[Three affinities, four affinities, five affinities…]
[The array revealed few with magical potential, most with weak, mixed affinities.]
[Suddenly!]
[A surge coursed through you, your Celestial Affinity blazing in a brilliant display!]
[Lily cheered but felt small, knowing she had no magical affinity.]
In Ironhaven, the detection array erupted in a radiant blue light, piercing the sky. Sorcerers, previously calm, were stunned.
"That aura…"
"No doubt—a water-attributed Celestial Affinity!"
"Haha, this boy belongs at our Celestial Academy!"
Instantly, composed sorcerers swarmed the Carter siblings, their excitement like merchants at a bustling fair.
"Brother…"
"It's okay, I've got this." James held Lily's trembling hand, shielding her as he faced the crowd.
Some coaxed, others offered promises, a few tried bribes. It was chaos.
James chose the Celestial Academy.
It had the strongest reputation, led by multiple Archmage-tier sorcerers. Their offer was genuine: a prime apprentice role, exclusive resources, and a private study chamber. Crucially, they allowed Lily to join.
"You've decided, young man?"
"Yes, elder. I choose the Celestial Academy."
[The Academy sorcerers were elated. They whisked you and Lily from Ironhaven, soaring on enchanted artifacts.]
[Clouds blurred past, the sun and moon cycled once, until the artifacts descended into a majestic mountain range—the Celestial Academy's home.]
[You and Lily rested briefly in a chamber.]
[Upon waking, you were ushered to the Academy's grand hall, where powerful sorcerers eagerly offered mentorship.]
[After careful thought, you joined Azure Spell Peak, aligned with your water affinity, becoming the prime apprentice of its Archmage leader.]
