Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 – Reputation War

Chapter 34 – Reputation War

The morning sun had barely risen over the Goldbear Estate when Glic Goldbear finished reading the latest intelligence reports.

Three separate stacks of parchment lay neatly arranged across his desk.

The first stack detailed the production output of the Mushroom Grove Dungeon Farm.

The second recorded the profits earned by the Second Branch in Valebridge.

The third...

Contained nothing but rumors.

Glic picked up the top report.

> "Goldbear Fusion Armor slowly steals the wearer's life."

Another.

> "The Goldbear family experiments on slaves using forbidden wizardry."

Another.

> "The monsters serving Goldbear are corrupted creatures created through Black Wizard rituals."

Another.

> "The mysterious artificer behind the Fusion Company is actually a Chaos Wizard from the Dark Fae Market."

He quietly placed the papers back onto the desk.

"So..."

"The reputation war has begun."

---

A Noble's Greatest Weapon

Unlike commoners, nobles rarely destroyed one another through open warfare.

Doing so attracted unwanted attention from the Wizard Tower and the royal court.

Instead...

They destroyed reputations.

Once a noble's name became stained...

Merchants refused business.

Churches denied blessings.

Knights abandoned service.

Even marriages became impossible.

A ruined reputation could erase centuries of family history.

Glic smiled slightly.

Unfortunately for Baron Tyreth...

Edward McAllister had once lived in the twenty-fifth century.

Information warfare wasn't new to him.

It was simply...

More primitive.

---

The Intelligence Department

"Summon everyone."

Within half an hour the conference room filled.

Captain Reinhardt.

Sariah.

Krex through a communication crystal from the Second Branch.

Several trusted merchants.

Goblin scouts.

Two kobold messengers.

Even Mira, leader of the spy network, quietly appeared from the shadows.

Glic looked around the room.

"Today."

"We establish a new department."

Everyone became curious.

"A department?"

Glic nodded.

"The Intelligence Department."

He walked toward a large map.

"Information wins battles."

"If we know our enemies before they move..."

"...we choose where they die."

He pointed toward Drenwick.

"Mira."

"You command intelligence gathering."

She grinned.

"I've been waiting for that."

---

Intelligence Structure

Glic quickly reorganized his forces.

Goldbear Intelligence Department

Mira

Sections:

Reconnaissance Team

Goblin scouts

Giant Eagles

Even Sariah looked impressed.

"My Lord..."

"You've planned this before."

Glic simply smiled.

"In another life."

---

Rumors...

Can Become Weapons

He turned toward Mira.

"I don't want lies."

She blinked.

"...What?"

"We don't spread false information."

"We spread true information..."

"...that people don't know yet."

The room fell silent.

Everyone looked confused.

Glic explained.

"If Baron Tyreth wastes tax money..."

Tell people.

"If merchants are mistreated..."

Tell people.

"If corrupt officials take bribes..."

Expose them.

Truth.

Presented correctly...

Was stronger than lies.

---

Mission One

Mira accepted her first assignment.

Investigate Baron Tyreth.

His finances.

His military.

His servants.

His merchants.

Everything.

"No fabricated evidence."

"I want facts."

She disappeared into the shadows.

---

The Merchant Union

Meanwhile...

Another meeting took place.

This time with merchants.

Over thirty merchants gathered inside the Goldbear Estate.

Many had once feared doing business with Glic.

Now...

The Mushroom Grove profits had changed everything.

A fat merchant raised his hand.

"My Lord."

"There are rumors."

"People are afraid."

Glic nodded.

"Then let them visit."

Everyone looked surprised.

"What?"

"Open the estate."

"Allow merchants to inspect the workshops."

Silence.

Captain Reinhardt frowned.

"That could be dangerous."

"It could."

"But transparency builds trust."

"If people see normal craftsmen..."

"If they see ordinary workshops..."

Rumors lose strength.

---

Open Factory Day

A week later...

The impossible happened.

The Goldbear Fusion Company opened its doors.

Hundreds arrived.

Merchants.

Scholars.

Minor nobles.

Craftsmen.

Even priests.

They expected dark rituals.

Instead...

They found organized workshops.

Blacksmiths forging armor.

Alchemists refining mushrooms.

Runes carefully engraved onto equipment.

Everything documented.

Everything recorded.

A priest whispered,

"This isn't chaos magic..."

"It's proper enchanting."

Another scholar stared at the production records.

"Incredible efficiency..."

The rumors immediately weakened.

---

The Three-Legged Crow's Hut

Several representatives from the Three-Legged Crow's Hut also attended.

One elderly artificer adjusted his spectacles.

"So..."

"These products really exist."

Another nodded.

"The quality exceeds ordinary apprentice work."

A third quietly smiled.

"This Goldbear..."

"...is worth investing in."

Unknown to everyone...

That was exactly what Glic wanted.

---

Mira Returns

Late that evening...

Mira returned.

She placed a thick folder on the desk.

"I found dirt."

"A lot."

Glic opened it.

His eyebrows slowly rose.

Baron Tyreth...

Had secretly increased road taxes.

Accepted bribes from smugglers.

Diverted emergency grain funds.

Forced villages to provide unpaid labor.

One page caught Glic's attention.

Hidden payments...

Connected to the surviving Crimson Blade Bandits.

His expression turned cold.

"So..."

"The bandits never disappeared."

"They simply changed employers."

---

Bigger Than Expected

Another report appeared.

House Valebridge.

Large purchases of weapons.

Mercenary recruitment.

Secret meetings.

Financial support flowing through shell merchants.

Sariah frowned.

"This isn't politics anymore."

"They're preparing for war."

Glic nodded.

"They're preparing..."

"...because they're afraid."

Power frightened old powers.

---

The familiar blue window appeared.

Glic smiled.

"A quest."

Interesting.

Meanwhile...

Inside Tyreth Manor...

The Baron smashed another wine bottle.

"What do you mean..."

"They opened their workshops?"

A merchant nervously answered.

"Everyone saw them."

"There were priests."

"There were scholars."

"No evidence of forbidden magic."

Tyreth's face twisted.

"And the rumors?"

"They're... weakening."

Another noble added,

"The merchants are beginning to trust Goldbear even more."

Tyreth's breathing grew heavy.

Across the room...

Ser Alaric sighed.

"I warned you."

"You underestimated him."

Tyreth clenched his fists.

"No..."

"I underestimated the man behind the Goldbear name."

Just then—

A guard hurried into the hall.

"My Lord!"

"A messenger from the capital!"

Tyreth frowned.

"From whom?"

"The Royal Treasury Office."

The room became silent.

Even Ser Alaric looked surprised.

The Baron broke the seal.

His face slowly paled.

"What is it?" Alaric asked.

Tyreth lowered the letter.

"The Treasury..."

"...has approved the Goldbear Fusion Company's application for recognition as an official Wizard Merchant Company."

The hall became deathly quiet.

Official recognition meant the company now enjoyed legal protections under the Kingdom of Fae Wood's commercial laws. Harassing it openly could draw investigations from the crown, the Wizard Tower, or both.

Ser Alaric closed his eyes.

"We've just lost the first battle."

Tyreth crushed the letter in his hand.

"No..."

"The war has only begun."

Outside the manor, thunder rolled across the sky.

Far away, at the Goldbear Estate, Glic looked toward the horizon with calm confidence.

The first move had belonged to his enemies.

The second had belonged to him.

Now the board was set for a conflict that would decide not just the fate of a company, but the future balance of power throughout the Kingdom of Fae Wood.
