Chapter 34 - CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR - THE NOGITSUNE'S TAIL OF DESTRUCTION

PREVIOUSLY...

The ivory courtyard of the Tamawo kingdom transformed into a battlefield of elemental fury. While Jasmine's whirlwinds scattered the guards like autumn leaves and Catherine's vines bound them to the earth, the two foxes finally went on the offensive.

"Elijah!" Akihiko barked, his voice echoing with a double-toned, supernatural resonance. As a white Gumiho, his speed was nearly impossible to track. He moved as a blur of snow-white fur and moonlight, swiping through the Tamawo spears with claws that hummed with spiritual energy.

Beside him, Baekhyun shifted with the grace of an orange Kitsune. His movements were fluid and mischievous. With a flick of his tail, he conjured fox-fire—brilliant, sapphire-blue flames that didn't burn the flesh but instead paralyzed the spirit of any Tamawo guard they touched.

"I've got him!" Baekhyun shouted, leaping over a defensive line to reach the altar where Elijah was being held.

"Hurry!" Catherine yelled, her hands glowing as she struggled to keep the vines from being cut by the King's elite warriors. "The connection to our world is weakening!"

Ambrose reached Alya just as the lead guard attempted to shove another handful of the cursed black rice into her mouth. With a roar of protective fury, Ambrose's muscles surged; he grabbed the guard by the collar and hurled him across the courtyard with the strength of his Babaylan ancestors.

"I've got you, Alya. Stay with me!" Ambrose whispered, shielding her with his body.

From his high vantage point, Kaito watched the display with a hunger that bordered on madness. He didn't see enemies; he saw a collection of ancient powers ripe for the taking. The prophecy was fulfilling itself right before his eyes.

"The orange Kitsune, the white Gumiho, and the elemental witch," Kaito whispered, his eyes glowing with the dark, oily smoke of the Nogitsune. He slowly began to descend the ivory stairs, his shadow lengthening until it swallowed the light of the courtyard. "This is exactly what I need to complete my tail of destruction."

"Stop right there!" Jasmine cried, pointing her weather pipe toward the approaching darkness. "You're not taking anyone else!"

Kaito only laughed—a sound that felt like ice sliding down their spines. "My dear, I've already taken what I wanted. I just need to seal the bond in blood."

THE CONTINUATION...

The Trickster's Shadow

High above the chaos, Kaito sat cross-legged in mid-air, a wicked grin on his face. He unfurled his first tail, a shimmering limb of dark energy. Within seconds, his image began to blur and fracture until dozens of identical Kaitos stood in the courtyard.

"Attack the King of the Tamawo!" Kaito commanded. His duplicates swarmed the ivory castle like a shadow, overwhelming the guards.

As the real Kaito watched the distraction, he unfurled his second tail. In a sickening display of shapeshifting magic, his features melted and reshaped themselves until he was a perfect double of Ambrose. Cloaked in this disguise, he slipped through the fray and followed the real Ambrose toward the glowing portal that led back to the mortal world.

Just as they reached the shimmering veil, the "false" Ambrose lunged. He raked his blackened, razor-sharp nails across the real Ambrose's back, tearing through skin and muscle.

Ambrose let out a strangled cry and fell to his knees.

"Kuya Mayor!" Alya cried out, rushing to his side. She tried to stem the bleeding, her eyes wide with terror. "What happened? Where did that wound come from?"

"I'm okay," Ambrose wheezed, his face pale from the sudden agony. He looked at the portal, which was beginning to flicker. "Go, Alya! We don't have much time!"

With a final, desperate surge of strength, Ambrose shoved Alya through the portal. The transition was a blur of light and wind, and a moment later, Alya gasped for air as she bolted upright in her bed.

"Kuya Mayor, no!" she screamed.

Beside her bed, Dory and Aunt Ara were weeping, but they stopped in shock when they saw Alya awake.

"Why are you crying? The Mayor is in danger! Let me go back!" Alya begged, her voice frantic.

As she spoke, everyone turned toward Ambrose's physical body, which was still lying in its trance. He suddenly arched his back and spat out a mouthful of dark blood, his shirt staining red in the exact spot where his soul had been struck.

"God, what is happening?" Ara cried, springing into action. "Dory, help me! Get the herbs we gathered from the forest! Alya, stay right there!"

The Prince's Betrayal

In the heart of the Tamawo kingdom, the air grew thick with a cold, unnatural mist.

"The Nogitsune is here," Catherine whispered, her fingers trembling as she flipped through the pages of her spellbook.

Jasmine stood beside her, eyes wide with horror as the clones of Kaito began to multiply. "They're hideous! Why are there so many of them?"

"Focus! Protect the Sigbinan!" Catherine commanded. Jasmine gripped her weather pipe and released a violent whirlwind, scattering the first wave of clones like dust. Simultaneously, Catherine chanted a protection spell, encasing Ethan, Aki, and Baekhyun in shimmering, translucent bubbles.

"Catherine, what is this?" Ethan shouted, pressing his hands against the glowing barrier. "Why are we trapped in here?"

"The Nogitsune is here," she repeated, her eyes scanning the crowd. Suddenly, "Ambrose" stumbled toward them, clutching a bleeding wound. Jasmine rushed to his side.

"Ambrose! Are you okay? Where are Alya and Elijah?"

"They're safe in the human world," the man wheezed. "I just got caught on some thorns. But who are these creatures?"

"They are the Nogitsune," Jasmine explained, her voice low. "But we have to find the real one. Ambrose, you're a Babaylan—you have the ability to see through a shapeshifter's lies."

Catherine stopped her chanting, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the man. "Is that true, Ambrose?"

"I... I'm not sure if my powers work in this realm," he stammered.

"Oh, they work," Catherine said coldly. "All Babaylan are powerful in the world of the Engkanto... unless, of course, you aren't the real Ambrose."

Without warning, Catherine released a powerful shockwave. The man's image flickered and shattered, revealing the pale, grinning face of Kaito.

"Shapeshifter! He's the real Nogitsune!" Baekhyun yelled.

"Jasmine, get away from him!" Aki tried to leap forward, but he froze mid-air. Kaito had exerted his will over the area, paralyzing the three foxes. Aki's hands sparked with electricity, but the lightning refused to leave his palms.

Kaito seized Jasmine by the throat, his nails lengthening into obsidian blades. "Don't make a move, Witch, or your friend will meet her Bathala sooner than expected. Give me the King of the Tamawo, and I'll leave you in peace."

"Really? Can you truly grant wishes?"

The group turned to see Soren, the Prince of Tamawo, stepping out from the shadows. His face was cold, devoid of the charm he had shown Elijah.

"Soren? What are you doing?" the King gasped, his voice breaking.

"I'm done being a Tamawo," Soren said, looking at Kaito. "I'll let you kill my father. In return, make me human."

"No!" Catherine screamed.

Kaito's laughter echoed through the ivory halls. "Deal!" he barked. He dissolved into a swirling cloud of black smoke, coiling around Soren like a serpent.

"What are you doing, my son!" the King wailed.

As the paralysis wore off, Ethan, Baekhyun, and Aki rushed toward the throne, but they slammed into a wall of vibrating energy. An invisible force field had been erected around the Prince and the shadow.

"Why can't we stop them?" Ethan cried, hammering his fists against the air.

"We can't," Catherine said, her voice heavy with dread. "The Prince made a pact with the Nogitsune. It's an ancient blood deal—one that no one can intervene in. Not even the devil himself can break it now."

The Ninth Tail and the Bitter Truth

In the physical world, Jasmine gasped for air as she was jolted out of her meditation. An elderly woman was tapping her forehead, her face etched with worry.

"Ambrose!" Jasmine cried, the name tearing from her throat. She took a glass of water from Dory with trembling hands.

"The Mayor is dead, Miss Jasmine," Alya whispered, her voice hollow.

Jasmine spun around and rushed to Ambrose's side. She shook him, screaming his name, but his body remained limp and cold.

"Ija, he's gone," Ara said, her eyes red from weeping. "I tried everything, but he was attacked by something beyond our medicine. Look at this." She pulled back the cloth to reveal the deep, jagged lacerations on Ambrose's chest.

"The Nogitsune," Jasmine hissed, tears streaming down her face. "He will pay for this!"

"Nogitsune?" Ara whispered, the name sounding foreign and dangerous.

"Yes. I was just with your son, Baekhyun, in the world of the Tamawo. I have to go back—I have to tell them where we are." Jasmine immediately sat back down, crossing her legs. She forced her consciousness back across the veil, returning to the ivory kingdom just in time to see Kaito standing over the lifeless body of the King of the Tamawo.

Nearby, a group of elder Babaylan trembled in terror. A dark, suffocating energy radiated from Kaito as his Ninth Tail slowly unfurled, shimmering with a terrifying, absolute power.

"The Apocalypse is near!" the Babaylan cried out. Catherine acted quickly, waving her hands to create a thick shroud of smoke that teleported the elderly priestesses back to safety in the mortal realm.

"Baekhyun!" Jasmine's astral form appeared beside him. "I'm with your mother now. Find us in Rover Town. Ambrose... Ambrose is dead!" Before they could respond, her spirit flickered and vanished, pulled back to her grieving body.

"Let's go. I know where that town is," Aki said, his fox ears twitching.

"But what about the Nogitsune?" Ethan asked, looking at the god-like figure on the throne.

"Kuya Ethan, now is not the time to face him," Catherine said grimly. "Not while he has all nine tails." With a forceful wave of her hand, she vanished the entire group from the Tamawo world.

The Truth Behind the Mask

Meanwhile, in a hidden mansion deep within the forest, Kaito's team stood in stunned silence. The air hummed with a frequency that made their skin crawl.

"He's done it," Calista whispered, clutching her book of spells. "Kaito has earned his ninth tail."

"What do we do now?" Daisuke asked.

"I can feel him," Zac added, his voice shaking as the aquatic fins on his arms began to pulse with blue light. "He's coming."

A whirlwind of black smoke erupted in the center of the room. A massive black fox emerged, its nine tails fanning out like a crown of shadows before it shifted back into Kaito's human form.

"Kaito-sama?" Calista said, she and the others bowing low.

"Finally," Kaito exhaled, his voice sounding deeper, more resonant. "I am back."

"We are honored to see you restored, my Lord," Calista said.

To her surprise, Kaito walked over and pulled her into a brief, firm hug. "Kaito-sama? What is this?" she asked, startled by the sudden show of affection.

"You are one of the reasons I have my tails again," Kaito said, his eyes softening for a fleeting second. "You have been like a mother to me. Allow me to thank you."

"Thank you, Kaito," she replied, still confused.

"Now," Kaito's expression turned cold again. "It is payback time. You will all help me uncover the truth."

"What truth, my Lord?" Daisuke asked.

"The truth of who slaughtered my kind. I want justice."

"I thought... I thought you wanted to conquer the world?" Zac asked hesitantly.

"No," Kaito replied. "I am seeking the truth. My memories returned with my tails." As he spoke, the dark marks of the curse on Zac and Daisuke's hands began to fade away.

"My Lord? The curse... it's disappearing," Zac noted, raising his hand.

"I am releasing you," Kaito said. "But before you go, we celebrate this victory. I need to know who truly killed the Nogitsunes."

Calista looked at him, her heart racing. "Do you have a lead?"

"I am not certain of everything yet," Kaito said, looking out toward the dark forest. "But I am sure of one thing: The White Dove was not involved in the massacre."

Calista gasped, the revelation shattering everything she thought she knew about the ancient war.
