Chapter 19 - You Snooze, You Lose

(Open POV)

Townsville…

There is the city skyline at night, with a soft glow over the horizon.

"The city of Townsville…" The narrator said, looking across the city as he continues. "…has brushed its teeth and tucked itself into the warm blanket of night. But as the city dreams…"

There is the observatory visible between two buildings.

"…a monkey schemes." The narrator said.

Observatory…

The shadow of Mojo Jojo cast huge against the wall inside. There is the scratching of a pencil with Mojo standing on the floor. Mojo is working at a drawing board that stands by itself in its particular area of the lair. A single lamp throws light onto his efforts.

"Yes…Yes…Yes!" Mojo cheered, with mounting fervor. "Yes!" He stops working, looking at the design. "No."

Mojo looks down at his blueprint. The drawing shows a large platform standing on jointed legs, with a large tube connected to its underside and centered over an X on the ground. Stick figures of the girls are drawn in to represent their motion up the tube, where a large blaster points at them.

"Something's amiss. Let's see…" Mojo said, looking at the bottom section of the blueprint, he points at X. "Girls stand on X…" He traced a path up to the platform. "…get sucked up to platform, where I sit poised with a laser gun. I activate the beam and the girls…"

Mojo looked at the girls on the X. Now they look more like their usual selves, and they take off.

"…fly away." Mojo said, groaning loudly. "That's where this otherwise brilliant plan falls apart! I must find a way to keep them from flying away! Hmmm…Ooh! How about flypaper?" He is crumpling up the design. "No! That's stupid!" Mojo is tossing it away. "No."

The balled-up paper is tossed over to a pile of other rejected ideas behind Mojo.

"Now, let's see…no…no…" Mojo said, tossing two more wads into the pile during this line.

There is a much larger collection of garbage. Mojo is snoring now on the drawing board, over which he has fallen asleep. Suddenly his eyes pop open, and he straightens up.

"By gum! I've got it!" Mojo said, scribbling a few calculations; his pencil is flying on the paper. "Oh yeah, oh yeah, ooooh, that's it!" He is triumphant. "Ha-ha! Perfect!"

Mojo kisses the blueprint, reaches down and comes up with an envelope. Now he addresses it as if it were a beloved child.

"Now I'll just keep you safe in here…" Mojo said, sliding the blueprint into an envelope. "…until tomorrow when I shall unleash…"

Mojo seizes the pencil and writes on the front of the envelope. It is in his hands; it now bears a title in big black letters.

"…'Mojo Jojo's Best Plan to Destroy the Powerpuff Girls Ever!'" Mojo siad, reading what is on the envelope.

Mojo laughs evilly over this soon-to-be coup de grace. Still laughing evilly, he runs off across the lair, his shadow looming over the far wall, and through a door that slides shut behind him. He is frozen in this same mad glee and Mojo looks back; this is a picture that hangs over his bed. Mojo is now under the covers, holding the plans in one hand and showing nearly the exact same expression. After a few seconds, he cuts himself off abruptly and falls asleep.

At the window, the curtains flutter in a draft from outside. A gust blows the envelope out from under Mojo's arm and carries it away.

Townsville…

Outside the window, the envelope floats out into the night and toward the park. The Amoeba Boys is slithering through the area and not looking particularly threatening—as usual.

"Oh, look. It's the Amoeba Boys, Townsville's most pathetic criminals ever. They couldn't commit a crime even if it smacked 'em in the face." The narrator said, bored.

The plans do exactly that to Bossman. He pulls them away.

"Hey! Hmmm…" Bossman said, curious.

Slim and Junior, look over his 'shoulders' at this item. All three look rather bewildered. Bossman has the labeled side of the envelope facing him.

"'Mojo Jojo's Best Plan to Destroy the Powerpuff Girls Ever!'" Bossman said, reading slowly, and he is still looking down at the envelope.

"Duh—what is it, Boss?" Junior asked.

"I…have no idea." Bossman said, looking up.

The Boys stand in completely confounded silence for a long moment—so long, in fact, that night fades into morning above them. Slim is the first to have something resembling an idea.

"Duh…uh…uh…maybe we, uh…should, uh…open it?" Slim asked.

Bossman flips the envelope over and sees the flap on the other side, with a clasp holding it shut.

"Wooooowww…" The Boys said, softly.

The clasp is undone, and the envelope's contents are removed. The plan looks very much like the one Mojo started with, but it does not impress Bossman too much.

"I knew it! Just a bunch of fancy words and numbers." Bossman said, tossing the plans over his 'shoulder'. "Phooey!"

The Boys slither away.

(Jared's POV)

Sky…

Buttercup and I are in flight, I'm flying in front of Buttercup. The paper sails into view and smacks me in the face.

"Hey!" I said, angrily stopping mid flight. "Damn it! I forgot which adventure this is! Patrolling the city can be so boring sometimes!"

I pulled the paper away and I read it, remembering which adventure it was.

"Yeah!" Buttercup said, grabbing the paper away from me, and had a look before dropping toward ground level and calling to the Boys from behind. Now she is quite irritated. "Did you fly in front of me to stop the paper from hitting me?"

"Yup." I said, happily.

"Thanks. Amoeba Boys! Better watch where you're throwing your trash, or I'll…" Buttercup said, annoyed.

Blossom flies into view.

"Wait! Jared, you flew in front of Buttercup on purpose." Blossom said, taking the plans. "Let me see that."

Bubbles joins her sisters and I in midair as Blossom inspects the diagram and brightens considerably upon doing so.

"Oh, boy! You know what this is? It's a scavenger hunt list!" Blossom cooed.

"That, or a plan for world domination by an evil genius." I said, happily.

Bubbles gasp softly.

"A scavenger hunt or a plan for world domination?" Bubbles asked, smiling. "How terrible!" She then spoke in an angry tone. "I don't believe in hunting scavengers."

Blossom flies away with me, "Jared, what can you tell me about this scavenger hunt list?"

"It's a plan. I can tell you that much." I said, smiling.

"A plan for what?"

"World domination? I guess."

"No, Bubbles! A scavenger hunt is when you dig up stuff nobody wants." Buttercup said, flying away.

"I know." Bubbles said, floating in the sky.

Townsville…

On ground level, Blossom and I approached the Boys.

"So you guys must be on a scavenger hunt, right?" Blossom asked.

"Duh…" Bossman said, annoyed.

The other girls fly down.

"Great! We'll help!" Blossom said, looking at the plans. "Now, the first thing we have to find is…"

Mojo's frustrated roar echoes from inside the observatory and can be heard even here, as can the sound of a lair being turned upside down in search of evil plans.

"This is going to be a long and fun day." I said, clutching the strap of my sling bag.

(Open POV)

Observatory…

A considerable pile of stuff has been dumped out onto the floor. Items that are visible include a spare brain cap, a blaster that looks very much like the one he used against the girls at the end of 'Bubblevicious', a voodoo doll in Blossom's image, books entitled 'BAD' and 'EVIL', and a statue that looks very much like the Anubis dog's head he stole in 'Monkey See, Doggie Do'—odd, considering that it shattered over his head at the end of that episode.

More items are flung into view, including a lit bomb, a brain, and a self-portrait, and Mojo starts to speak.

"I can't find it! Where is it? I just had it!" Mojo yelled, standing in front of a closet; more items and articles of clothing are thrown out behind him. "Oh, where, oh, where can my perfect plan be?! If only that fanboy trusted me, then he would tell me where my perfect plan is?!"

(Jared's POV)

Townsville…

We're outside, near the observatory, as the search continues. We are the base of the mountain; the girls, the Boys, and I are looking over the 'scavenger hunt list'.

"Hmm. Okay…chewing gum. Anybody have any chewing gum?" Blossom asked.

Bossman and Slim look nervously at each other; the former then looks down at Junior, who is chewing merrily away at something and not paying any mind. After some seconds, Bossman gets angry and slaps the runt across the 'face'. Junior stops chewing.

"I do." Junior said, opening his mouth, revealing a well-used wad of gum on his tongue.

"Take mine, Blossom." I said, opening my mouth, revealing the gum I was chewing on while bored when doing some patrolling in the sky. I handed the piece of gum to Blossom. "It's mint flavored."

All three girls look slightly ill at the idea of having to actually touch this stuff, but Blossom forces herself to take it. They regard it with no small disgust.

"Great." Blossom said, holding the chewed piece of gum I was snacking on. "Mint?"

"Yeah. Mint's been in." I said, looking down at Blossom.

"Now we need paper clips. Where can we find paper clips?" Bubbles asked, taking the plans.

"Here you go." I said, taking out several paper clips out of my sling bag and handing it to Bubbles.

These were removed from the palm of my hand, and Bubbles smiled and took the paper clips from me.

"Thanks." Bubbles said, holding the paper clips. "How much did you store in your bag?"

"Everything we need." I said, smugly.

"A flashlight?" Buttercup asked, taking the plans.

"Got it." I said, taking out a flashlight out of my sling bag and revealing exactly what we need. "Wasn't that hard."

The flashlight is already switched on, and Buttercup takes it away and points it at Bubbles, who shields her eyes.

 "A basketball?" Blossom asked.

"Yup." I said, taking out a basketball out of my sling bag. "Picked it up at Dick's Sporting Goods a while back."

I handed the basketball to Blossom.

Now the girls pop up, one by one, in time with their next lines. They have clearly warmed up like me to this whole idea.

"A bathtub?" Bubbles asked.

"A magnet?" Blossom asked.

"A crustacean?" Buttercup asked.

"Uh…" I said, looking down at the ground. "I didn't have enough space for the bathtub. And I didn't want to keep a crustacean in my bag. And I might have lost the magnet."

The other two Boys glare at Junior, and Bossman slaps him across the 'face' again.

"Oh, well. It's okay you couldn't fit a bathtub in there." Blossom said, happily.

The girls take off, one by one, in time with the next lines.

"I'll get the bathtub!" Bubbles chirped.

"I'll get the magnet!" Blossom said, excitedly.

"I'll get the crustacean!" Buttercup said, passing the observatory.

"I'll get to the bottom of this!" Mojo said, from inside the observatory.

(Open POV)

Observatory…

Mojo is looking about in various directions. It might be the sound of a weapon being fired as he speaks.

"Nope, not in there…nope, not in there…nope, not in there…" Mojo said, he is at the controls of a large laser cannon and cutting holes in his walls.

The lair now looks like a piece of Swiss cheese. Mojo cuts one more piece away, and it falls to the floor—no missing plans produced. Now he yells in frustration.

Park…

Outside the observatory, it looks just as bad from here. The Amoeba Boys and I are still here. Bubbles flies into view above us, carrying a bathtub that happens to be occupied by a very fat woman. She lets go of the bathtub.

"Sorry." I said, turning myself intangible, not wanting to be crushed by the bathtub. "Gotta protect myself from this."

The tub hangs in midair for a moment before crashing down on the Amoeba Boys, and it didn't crash into me because of me turning myself intangible. The woman instantly covers the bits that need to be covered in public and blushes beet red from embarrassment. She too hangs in midair and finds herself right back in the tub when it is pulled off the ground to reveal three slightly flattened Amoeba Boys.

The tub is attracted to a giant horseshoe magnet in Blossom's hands. She lets go; at ground level as a shadow grows over the Boys and they look up resignedly. The tub, woman, and magnet crash down on them and embed themselves deep into the ground.

Buttercup is in flight, she goes up against a giant crab and readily gains the upper hand; a pincer is broken off, one eye takes a hit, and all the legs on one side are snapped through. Now she backs up into the air and dives in for the final blow. Before it connects, though.

I'm laughing at the Amoeba Boys, knowing they're still feeling the pain of what Blossom and Bubbles did. Blossom now holds the magnet, Bubbles the bathtub; the fat woman is gone as I teleported her back home. The tub is full of some pink substance now. The Boys have seen better days and are still in the crater left by the impact of the items.

"Gosh, we're sorry, Amoeba Boys. We didn't know you were under there." Blossom said, sadly.

"Are you okay?" Bubbles asked.

"Yeah. We're…" Bossman said.

The remains of the crab fall on the Boys.

"Okay. That really is hilarious." I said, laughing, still intangible.

"…in a lot of pain." Bossman said, muffled, woozily.

Buttercup flies down and lifts up the crab, "Come on, guys, quit laying around and let me see the list."

Buttercup takes it from Bossman and studies it for a moment as she floats over to her sisters and I made myself visible to them.

"Hey! You know what? I think we've got everything." Buttercup said, smirking.

"Hooray! We hunted the scavenger." Bubbles said, smiling.

Blossom checks the sheet.

"Great. Can we go?" Buttercup asked.

"Yeah. I want to play Super Smash Bros with Bubbles and Buttercup." I said, stopping my laughter. "This is getting boring."

"No, wait! There's instructions here. Know what?" Blossom asked, floating toward the Amoeba Boys. "I think we're supposed to put all this stuff together. Is that right, Amoeba Boys? We're supposed to build it?"

"Duh…" The Amoeba Boys said, at the same time.

"Great! Let's get started, girls, Jared." Blossom said, looking at Bubbles, Buttercup, and I.

"Right." I said, clutching the strap of my sling bag.

In a matter of moments, we have put the pieces together. The body of the crab now stands high in the air, with one pincer attached underneath and holding the bathtub upside down. The legs have been attached to the underside, with the joints extended to be nearly straight. A hole has been cut in the center of the shell on top; the magnet points toward this. The tub is still filled with the pink substance that was seen before.

The girls and I land in the shadow of the contraption. Blossom looks at the plans while Bubbles admires the finished product.

"Ooh! It's…" Bubbles said, frowning.

"Not done." I said, looking down at the drawing in Blossom's hands, with the raygun visible on top. "Unfortunately."

"Yeah. The high-tech laser is missing." Buttercup said, annoyed.

The plans are lowered to show the machine in the distance.

"But who has a high-tech laser?" Blossom asked.

"Mojo Jojo." I said, pointing my finger at the observatory.

(Open POV)

Observatory…

Mojo is now borderline psychotic—in his lair. His eyes are very bloodshot, and one pupil is noticeably larger than the other. A twisted smile is frozen on his face.

"I know who took my plans!" Mojo yelled, slowly directing his gaze to his left; we can hear his eyeballs creaking in their sockets. Suddenly he turns to his right and points angrily. "It was you!"

Mojo points in that direction to the wall. His 'suspect' is a bird perched in one of the holes he cut earlier. It chirps innocently.

"Well, then…it was you!" Mojo said, pointing again, stopping on a telephone. It has nothing to say either.

Mojo spots light from the holes falling all over the floor, "It was all of you!"

The room begins to shake with a series of impacts, and Mojo covers his ears.

"Ohh, the pounding, the pounding! Why won't it stop?" Mojo asked.

Outside, the girls and I are at Mojo's front door. The source of the tremors is Buttercup's overly enthusiastic knocking, delivered in rhythm with her next line.

"Why—won't—this—guy—answer?!" Buttercup exclaimed.

Mojo throws the door open, "WHAAAATTTT?!?"

From Mojo's perspective, Bubbles finds herself being pushed in front of him by Buttercup; Blossom and I remain away from the door. Blossom is caught a little off guard by the maneuver, but addresses him, acting as you might expect a nervous little kid to act in front of a grown-up - hands behind her back, scuffing her toes against the ground and being as polite as she knows how.

"Hello!" Bubbles said, as Buttercup backs off. "Please, Mr. Mojo, sir, could we please borrow your supercharged high-tech laser, please?"

"Too cute." I said, standing behind Bubbles and Buttercup.

A pause.

"Okay, okay. Just don't bother me again. I'm trying to find my plans on how to destroy you." Mojo said, scoffing.

(Jared's POV)

Outside the observatory…

The girls and I fly a little way down the side of the mountain away from the observatory. A large hatch opens in the rock, and the object of their search—the same laser Mojo was using to open up the walls—is extended out to them on a long, flexible arm. We take hold of it to carry it off.

"Thank you, Mojo!" The girls said, at the same time.

"Yeah. Thanks!" I said, flying away with the girls.

The arm retracts and the hatch closes as we go.

Townsville…

I look at the upper portion of the machine. The laser has been mounted on top of the magnet. I then looked down to the base of the machine, where the two groups and I were admiring the final result.

"Ahhh…" The girls said, at the same time.

"Will you look at that?" Bubbles asked.

"Yeah…What is it?" Buttercup asked.

"It looks like some sort of ride. Is that right, Boys? Is it a ride?" Blossom asked.

Brief silence from the Amoeba Boys.

"Duh…" Bossman said, annoyed.

"Come on, girls. This looks like fun!" Blossom chirped.

They zip over.

A large X has been marked on the ground beneath the platform. The Powerpuff Girls land on this; nothing happens for a few seconds, however.

"Amoeba Boys! Now, what do we do?" Blossom asked, cupping her hands to her mouth.

"Uh…" I said, looking at the Amoeba Boys, all of whom are absolutely dumbfounded. "Got anything?"

Bossman holds the plans, "Duh…"

"Read the instructions!" Buttercup yelled, nearby.

Bossman peruses the girls for a moment, "Duh…Oh! Go get the bathtub."

"No, no, no, we did that already! How do we start the ride?" Blossom asked.

The Boys and I lean in to read the plans more closely.

I looked behind Bossman and looked at one section; now we can see the directions very clearly: 'TO START MACHINE, PUSH RED BUTTON'.

"Duh…" Bossman said, and I looked down at the Amoeba Boys. "Push the red button!"

"Girls, if you don't know how to get out of this sticky situation. Chew your way out of it." I said, looking at the girls.

"Okay!" Blossom yelled.

The two groups face each other from their respective positions—the girls under the rig, the Boys and I standing away from it—for a moment. Nothing out of the ordinary happens.

"Amoeba Boys!" The girls said, irritated.

"What?" Bossman asked.

"Push the button!"

"Push the damn button!" I said, angrily.

"Oh." Bossman said, getting the idea.

The Boys slither over to the machine and up into the seat behind the laser. A large red button on the control panel is pressed, and the show begins. As the girls look up happily, the bathtub is lowered toward them; they are caught within the green sludge inside and lifted up.

"Ewwww!" The girls cried, while I'm looking at them from-the-ground view of them being hauled in. "Whee!"

The tub disappears inside the shell, and the opening closes; inside, the tub is placed on a conveyor belt and pulled away to leave the girls stuck to it. Still encased in the muck, they laugh as they are carried through a tunnel, up to an incline, and onto a small platform. Next, they are raised into the air, emerging in the center of the upper surface of the crab shell. They have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

"Wow!" Buttercup said, at a loss for words.

"That was fun!" Bubbles said, excitedly.

"Yeah, Amoeba Boys, that was great!" Blossom said, as the happy mood is broken when the laser starts to swing into position and target them. "Oh, no! That laser is coming right toward us! This is no ride—this is a Powerpuff destruction machine!"

"Whoops. I thought it was a world domination machine." I said, and now the weapon has locked onto the girls, and they struggle to free themselves from the pink glop without success. "Son of a bitch."

"HELP!" The girls said, and I looked over at the Amoeba Boys, then back at the girls. "HELP!"

(Open POV)

Observatory…

Mojo is still having no luck finding his plans. The bird now sits atop his brain cap. As the girls keep yelling, he inspects a sheet of paper, crumples it, and throws it away.

"HELP! HELP! HELP!" The girls said, from outside.

Mojo is now atop of a pile of papers that stands at least three times as tall as he does, "What's all that racket?"

Mojo grabs the edge of one of the holes in the wall and pulls himself up for a look. He claps his hands to his face in total shock; his perspective of the Powerpuff destructor, just as he designed it.

"MY MACHINE!!" Mojo said, terrified.

The Amoeba Boys are at the control panel.

(Jared's POV)

Townsville…

Junior is working the aiming yoke back and forth, "Duh—hey, look, Boss! I'm drivin'!"

Mojo shoves the Amoeba Boys aside.

"Get out of here! This is my machine!" Mojo said, laughing as he takes hold of the yoke to fine-tune the aim. "Now I've got you, Powerpuff Girls!" The laser turns down to point right at the Powerpuff Girls. "And it is my plan that will destroy you! And then I will rule the world!"

The girls are not at all pleased with his sudden hogging of the spotlight.

"Mojo, you creep!" Buttercup said, angrily.

"This is the Amoebas' plan!" Blossom yelled.

"Yeah! You're just jealous!" Bubbles chirped.

Mojo flips out, "No! No! It is mine, I tell you! I came up with the crab! And the laser! And even the chewing gum that holds you!"

"Chewing gum?!" The girls exclaimed.

The girls smile.

"Minty fresh, girls!" I said, looking up at the Powerpuff Girls.

"Girls! That is what you meant, Jared. Thanks! 'Chew' thinking what I'm thinking?" Blossom asked.

"Mmm-hmm!" Bubbles and Buttercup said, nodding.

Now we—and they—know the nature of that green sludge in the bathtub. The Powerpuff Girls start chomping at high speed, not at all bothered by the fact that this stuff came straight out my mouth. In seconds they have freed themselves; they fly toward Mojo, each blowing a huge bubble that pops with explosive force when they reach the camera. The monkey is knocked from his seat, and the girls serve up their usual all-you-can-eat buffet of physical abuse, ending with a smashing triple punch. At a close-up of a section of the crab's upper surface; Mojo's shadow advances into view in slow motion, and he crashes down after it.

"This is going to be a nice show." I said, looking between three very angry girls face three still-puzzled Boys. "I love it."

"Well, Amoeba Boys, playing dumb all these years." Blossom said.

"When all the while you were criminal masterminds!" Bubbles said, angrily.

"Looks like it's the big house for you!" Buttercup yelled.

Mojo suddenly snaps back to consciousness when he hears these words, and he gets partway up. He is nearly as frantic as when he was unable to find his plans.

"But it is I who planned it! I did it, not them!" Mojo said, as I looked at his face. "I am the criminal mastermind! I am the evil genius! I smart! They dumb!"

"The Amoeba Boys are dumb and you are smart, Mojo Jojo." I said, walking over to the Powerpuff Girls.

Mojo reaches into view, jerking a thumb toward himself as he continues, "I am responsible for trying to destroy you!"

The girls and I smile.

"Okay. Then you go to jail." Blossom said.

"Yup. You go to jail." I said, crossing my arms.

"That's right!" Mojo said, triumphantly.

The standard end shot comes up.

"So once again the day is saved—thanks to the Powerpuff Girls!" The narrator cheered.
