I waited till the military vehicles went beyond the horizon. Then I walked back indoors. Mom showed me to my room and I told her that I don't sleep anymore. I stopped sleeping the day I injected this stuff into me. She asked me what else I could do. I sat down and sensed my surroundings. I told her that I can sense everyone in the entire city. I heard a cry and figured out that people were being transported in a bus got trapped by the zombies so I flew towards them. I grabbed the bus and flew it back. The people were less afraid of me after that. Mom stood frozen for a minute. Then her smile grew. I sat down and people thanked me for I had done. They didn't mind that I was different. Even the warden smiled that I showed up. He promised not to tell anyone and so did everyone else.
The people in the bus was scared at first then they walked calmly. The bus mostly filled with children. The first to leave were people wearing lab coats and nurses outfits. I was told these are custodians of the local orphanage. The last to walk out was two cute kids. They were the twins Angela and Angus Wakefield. They stared at everyone with caution and walked quietly towards the building. The man wearing lab coat said that he was a surgeon once upon a time but he switched to phycology. He just keeps the coat as a reminder.
The kids were taken to A Block. They stayed comfortably wondering if they would be adopted or not. I asked around if anyone was looking to adopt and a few came forward. I told them to go to A Block and claim the kids. There was something about the lab coat that just didn't sit well at all. The adults agreed and approached the kids. The nurses looked displeased. The doctor tried to dissuade them but in the end the only kids left were the Wakefield twins, an African American kid and a Chinese kid. The rest were absorbed the adults. The doctor was pissed but he was happy that some still was around. He ordered that the Diana be moved to the basement for experiments after hours. The nurses agreed and I was shocked so I asked Bilyk women to adopt the other kids or they will be found dead. They immediately ran to collect the kids. Mom went with them and they came back with them. This didn't seem to deter the doctor as he waited till everyone was asleep to kidnap her. I woke the women up and we followed those idiots till they reached the basement. She bit one of them and ran. I tried to hug and mom pointed her gun at these nincompoops. Her brother grabbed her and held her in shock. He had a very high regard of the doctor. So when he heard that he wanted to hurt his sister was a huge break of trust.
We called the warden and he ordered that they leave immediately. The doctor and his assistants protested but the other residents agreed that they are unwelcome. They were escorted out to the gate and it was shut behind them. I climbed the wall and pressed my back against the ceiling and stayed there going through the memory of the donor. I enjoyed a few memories when I was poked with the end of a broom. I opened my eyes and snarled. My mom came into focus holding the broom. She backed away a little but she realized that I didn't mean it. She asked me to come down and I told her that I am here because I feel comfortable here. She insisted since it would scare the kids. They walked in and started to comment on how cool it was that I can do this. Mom stared at the kids for a moment and walked out with a resigned look. The warden chuckled and he went back to bed. Mom came back and apologized for poking me and I forgave her. She smiled and asked me nicely to come down. I told her that I am trying to learn my gifts so I will not be coming down for a few more minutes. She waited till I came down to ask me again. I told her that it is best if she didn't know for the sake of plausible deniability. She gave me a testy look and left. Alice's mom on the other hand wanted to know and she kept insisting. I told her to give it a rest. She gave up and left.
The next morning everyone was having breakfast when Annie brought up Molly and the other reminded her that it could summon her. I chuckled, "Molly turned herself into a werewolf but it didn't heal her. She transformed into a wolf with a human arm and two human legs." They paused for a moment to imagine what she looked like and they burst out laughing. The kids laughed too and mom shook her head. Alice's mom also shook her head and started the inquiry but Sonja told her that she is not going allow her. Both of them had what would described as a staring contest. Sonja won and Alice's mom left without a word. Sonja asked where Molly was. She asked me if I could sense her. I extended my senses and even used Echolocation. I found her in her father's lab. She was injured and her father had no choice but to remove her bionics. She was currently stuck in a wheelchair. Her father had forbidden her to transform. The soldier would shoot her without hesitation. When I explained this the others made sure if she shows up they will take care of it.
After breakfast I asked the warden to ask the governor why the soldiers didn't blow up the city with those creatures boxed up like they had promised. What were they trying do? This aroused his curiosity and he called the governor. He made some calls and he explained that the national guard deployment an hour ago and that they are trying to drive these things to a safe zone. They are blowing up these things city by city. The next is us so we have nothing to worry about.
Sure enough they arrived with blood bags and fresh meat. We watched as those things were lured out of the city and was blown up. The city was deemed safe an hour later and we were told we can move about freely. The infection has been eradicated. We walked out not believing for one moment that we are safe. Mostly people walked out thinking those things would pop up from the corner. When they heard a bang they all ran back to the prison. I shook my head and walked in the direction of the sound. Before I got there a strong hand grabbed me and dragged me. It was the warden. He dragged me back to the prison and we closed the door shut. I sensed what happened in the direction of the bang and it turns out to be Shaw. He and his friends laid out a trap for me and the warden saved me. I hugged him to say thank you. He said that no matter what happens I should not go head first into danger. Mom agreed with him.
A few minutes later the national guard arrived and so did Shaw. He and his men walked and demanded that I come with them. The warden told them that this is not a grocery store so please leave. They said it was not a request but he refused and so did mom. Shaw pulled out his gun and shot mom in the head without a second thought. He then shot the warden. The national guard shot Shaw in the chest. Shaw's unit pulled out their gun to retaliate. Bullets started to ricochet around and we fell to the floor. I stared at mom's corpse and cried. When the last bullet expended most of my brother's unit was dead. The others had surrendered. They pretended to be defeated. When the national guard approached them to arrest them, the men and women of the national guard was killed without mercy. I heard Shaw give the order to kill everyone in the prison and take me under restrain.
I looked at him with anger. He has taken enough from me today. So I lunged forward and snapped his neck. I kept turning his head till he was facing his own butt. The others tried to empty their guns but I used Shaw as shield. I ran quickly and got restrain and cuffed the bad guys. But the cat was out of the bag. I had exposed myself to be one of those things. They would get me one way or the other so I ran as fast as I could. I reached the janitor's closet and locked myself in. I wrapped my hands around the bar.
I heard banging on the door but I kept on pulling at the bars to get out. I heard them call for a battering ram. I had enough and just kicked as hard as I could. The bars flew across the street and landed with a clatter. I punched the glass to make room and I watched as the bats arrive in huge numbers. Behind the door I just barred I heard people stepping aside to let someone break the door. I turned into bat and flew into the army of bats. Immediately they flew as fast they could to take me away from there like they were a motorcade or something. I flew half a block away and heard the door finally give. They walk in a declare that I was gone. Yes I was gone just not the way they assumed I would. Time to get my stuff and bail. Below me I saw my beautiful city in ruins. Zombies were attacking here and there. People were dying because now there are people that like kill survivors for fun. This pandemic has brought out the worst in people. I pray that this nightmare would end quickly. I turned around and went back to get my friends before they ended up six feet under. The bats protested but came anyway.
