Chapter 14 - Perfect

"Pass me the spoon Kevin." The mother, Leah says as she prepares breakfast for the house.

"Of course." Kevin says with a smile as he hands over the wooden spoon to the woman.

A few weeks have passed since Kevin had stopped the two muggers and stumbled into this household. After crashing at their place for this long, Kevin has decided it's his last day before he leaves out on his own.

Breakfast is served and the four eat together in the kitchen. "You sure you really wanna leave already Kevin? It's not like we want to rush you out." Leah says as she eats with a soft smile.

"Eh, I could do with having the living room all to myself." The old man, Harold says with a chuckle as he eats his soup.

"I won't miss your snoring either." Kevin says as he sits back against the counter and stirs his fork around his plate. He's still getting used to the whole idea of eating but appreciates the warm taste of the pancakes Leah prepared nonetheless, even though he has never felt hungry.

"You could work on that Dad." Leah says with a giggle before taking a bite of the meal she prepared.

After a bit of friendly banter, Leah suggests, "How about we do something before you leave? Like that fair down the road?"

"Oh yeah! We could go on the Ferris wheel!" Derrick says with a smile, forgetting his food as he stands up from his chair.

"Alright. Alright." Kevin says with a warm smile as he finishes taking a bite out of his breakfast.

The family along with the smiling godling leave their small home and arrive at the fair. After buying tickets, Derrick is released from his mother's arms and immediately rushes toward various rides with Kevin trying his best to follow along, even though he could move faster than a rocket. "Let's go! Let's go!" Derrick shouts over and over as he rushes from ride to ride.

"It's nice to have someone watch over the little gremlin for once." Harold murmurs to Leah as she laughs because of Kevin's struggle. "It is nice huh?" Leah says back as she watches the two go across a ride's tracks.

"Ferris wheel! Ferris wheel!" Derrick shouts as he drags Kevin along to the tall spinning machine. Derrick runs past the ticket checker and immediately climbs into a red car.

"Sorry about that." Kevin says with an awkward smile as he quickly shows the man his ticket and gets into the car with Derrick.

"It's so high!" Derrick yells as they reach the top of the wheel and he stares at the view of the fair with wonder.

Kevin follows Derrick's gaze and studies the clouds for a moment. How could anyone want to rule this? How could anyone want to contain this for themself?

They soon get off the ride and Derrick rushes back over to Leah and Harold. "You look like you had fun honey! How was the Ferris wheel?" Leah says as she hugs her son.

"It was awesome! Did you see how high I went, Mom?" Derrick yells up at Leah.

"You didn't let him drag you around too much right?" Leah says as she looks over at Kevin.

"Eh. He may have got lucky a couple of times." Kevin replies with a smile as he joins the rest of the group.

"How about we go get some ice cream huh?" Leah says looking back down at Derrick as his face lights up. "Yeah!" Derrick yells causing Leah to giggle.

Leah and Derrick walk toward the little ice cream shop while the withering man and the eternal slow walk behind.

"So have you figured out what you're gonna do after this? What you're gonna do with your 'finite' life?" The old man says with a small chuckle as he pushes himself along with his cane.

"Hm. Not exactly. But that's the beauty in it right?" Kevin says with a smile as he walks alongside Harold.

The elder returns his chuckle, "I guess so." Harold says as they sit together at a black table by the ice cream shop.

"What do you see in it? What do you find beautiful?" Kevin murmurs as he sits back, his eyes on the clouds yet again.

The old man stares for a moment silently before responding. With a deep breath, he finally replies looking out at the sky as the sun falls and the moon begins to rise.

"I think it doesn't matter what you find beautiful. After all, there's so much to love. To some, it may be the flowers that blossom under the warm sun or the view over a forest from a mountain. To others, it may be someone they love, their family or a partner. From the smallest flower to the stars in the sky, they all shine so beautifully do they not?" Harold says as he looks over at Kevin with a smile.

"That's why ultimately I don't think it matters what you love, they all belong to the world, I think what matters is that you love them." He finishes as he turns back to see the stars begin to light up in the forming night.

"Hm. I think maybe you're right old man." Kevin says with a small smile as he leans forward and watches as a bird lands back in its nest, probably to feed its children. Maybe

"Hey! We got ice cream!" Derrick says as he and Leah arrive at the table. They sit down and the two others turn to them.

Leah giggles. "How about you go grab us some napkins, Kevin?" Leah says as she watches Derrick eat his chocolate ice cream messily.

"Sure thing." Kevin says as he stands and walks over to a dispenser on the wall of the shop. He looks back and watches as the three laugh together. He smiles warmly as he turns back to the dispenser. Suddenly, he feels a small ache in his stomach.

Is this life?

Hmmmmm.. CRACK.
