Leah and Seth came running over in wolf form after the training with the Cullens.
(You're back so how was it?) asked Dean.
(It was amazing! Vampires are so cool! That guy Jasper was awesome, a war hero who took on hordes of Newborns in the past, he told us what to watch out for and what to do, I'm going to kick so much Newborn butt,) said Seth excitedly.
(Ugh, please don't phrase it that way,) said Leah.
Dean snorted, (A war hero huh, that's laughable, listen well Seth, Newborns are just overly strong rabid animals, as long as you pay attention and avoid getting grabbed, you'll be alright, it doesn't take a skilled master to beat one.)
It wouldn't be surprising to him if most vampires had very little supernatural combat experience, rarely having to fight one another which often resulted in quick bouts. At least it made killing them easier.
(Ah, okay,) said Seth a little deflated.
(Remember we're wolves, we were created to be better than them in every way,) said Dean, trying to cheer him back up.
(I know, and it's cool being wolves, but it'd be nice running around like they do in human form,) said Seth.
(Well, it's not like you can't, our human forms may not be as powerful as theirs but it's still strong. You bring up a good point though, we've been slacking when it comes to training in our human forms, we'll start doing that from now on so we can be ready for everything like we're supposed to be, after all, if we can't defend ourselves in human form, we could get killed before we even transform,) said Dean.
(Way to go Seth,) Leah groaned sarcastically, not interested in more training.
Seth's ears dropped, also not feeling enthused about the idea.
(What about you, what did you think?) directing his question to Leah.
(I think they don't care about anything but themselves and they're only interested in using us to protect themselves, the way they joke and play with one another without a care in the world during such an important time is sickening to me, I wish to see them all dead,) said Leah.
(In due time,) said Dean.
(Wha, I thought we were allies now?" said Seth.
(Reluctant allies sure, but never forget what we were made for Seth, vampires are the enemy, and to leave one alive is to leave an endless threat, a plague of destruction for every living thing,) said Dean.
(But they're vegetarians,) argued Seth.
(Vegetarians, what a joke, have you seen the animals they killed? Even when they're not targeting humans, the destruction they cause is immense, and let's not forget they still change others, others who may not want to stick to their so-called vegetarian diet,) said Dean.
(Do you understand?) asked Leah.
(I guess,) said a defeated Seth.
(Come on, how about I take you out on a hunt for tonight's dinner,) said Dean, intending to show Seth firsthand what the Cullens leave behind.
(Can I?) asked Seth, tail wagging.
(Sure, I'll just stay here then,) said Leah despondently.
(Alright then, it seems Leah doesn't want to come, it's just you and me little bro,) said Dean.
(Sweet, I'm going to catch the biggest Buck,) said Seth.
(Think bigger,) said Dean, thinking it's been a while since he had elk.
(Bastards,) said Leah to their retreating forms, deciding it would be nice to visit her mom while they were gone.
...
Joint training continued for another week in a much more limited capacity with Dean continuing to keep his distance, keeping his hunger in check.
Back at the refuge the intensity of their training also picked up with the added hand-to-hand combat which Quil and Paul excelled at.
Jake was still being a moody little bitch about Bella and Edward though it became obvious to anyone observant that Bella wasn't the girl everyone portrayed her as. She had a real strength to her, the way she mouthed off against the two boys' shit whenever it grew too much was a sight to behold.
However, she proved to be an enigma to most, including Dean and Leah, the latter of which hated to admit the girl had spunk when she wasn't acting all meek, hiding away behind the leeches, pretending to be something she wasn't.
Leah knew deep down it wasn't Bella's fault, but she still carried a grudge for bringing her problems to them.
On the other hand, Dean noticed during the rare times their paths crossed, the strange way Bella watched what she said around the vamps as if walking on eggshells. It looked more like an actor trying to put on the perfect performance so that they might endear themselves to her, and the funny thing is, it was working, Rosalie excluded.
This became abundantly obvious when he would spot her hanging out with her human friends, laughing and having a good time.
Everything changed when the first snowfall hit. The Cullens pixie fortune teller had a vision that they would attack soon, putting everyone on high alert. Game plans were formed between the Cullens and the pack with Jake and Sam taking the lead.
Dean would consider such plans, but it was ultimately his word they would follow.
It was during one cold winter night they finally came. A howl went out gathering everyone together.
(Cullens called, they're coming,) said Sam.
(I spotted a scout!) Quil called out from outside the refuge doing his patrols.
(Stick with the plan, head to the open meadow, where we'll meet up with...) Sam was cut off.
(Scrap that, gather up, we're heading out, we'll ambush them in the forest, Sam will lead, and the little ones will stay behind and guard the refuge,) ordered Dean.
(Understood,) said Sam, falling in line.
(What, why is he leading?) asked Paul, thinking if anyone other than Dean was leading a fight it should be him, it was about time he got his time to shine.
(Because of his coat dumbass,) Jared replied smugly.
(Fuck you,) said Paul.
(Hang on a damn minute! What about the Cullens, the plan? Bella?) asked Jake angrily.
(There it is, was wondering when you'd bring her up,) Leah sneered.
(What about them?) asked Dean uncaringly.
(I'm not leaving Bella unguarded; I'm sticking with the plan!) said Jake running off.
(Jake!) shouted Embry in disbelief.
(Let him go, he'll get what's coming to him after, meanwhile, we can use that, the Newborns will likely lose their leader when she realizes where Bella is, making things much easier for us,) said Dean.
(The red bitch is mine!) Leah growled.
(Come on Embry, are you really surprised?) asked Quil.
(I guess not, it's just sad you know, he's choosing Bella over us, over everyone, I can't believe he's changed so much,) said Embry.
(Yeah man, I know,) said Quil solemnly.
Hearing them, Leah thought about what Dean told her in the past, about how Jake and Bella made a blood pact, wondering if that had anything to do with his behavior change when he became a wolf and not just giving Bella a bit of vamp protection.
(We can help,) said Brady determinedly, not content with staying behind.
(I know you can, the vamps won't all stay in one place to die, and I expect you three to keep the refuge safe, tell me now if you can't handle it, no one will be here to hold your hands,) said Dean.
(We can handle it,) said Brady confidently with the other two echoing his sentiment.
(Good, let's go guys, we have an infestation to exterminate,) said Dean, leading them away.
