Viella's breath came in short gasps as she forced herself to move.
The ringing in her ears dulled the sounds of battle, but she could see it all—the flash of steel, the arc of blood, the wild, gleeful shrieks of the goblins as they attacked without restraint.
Even those who were already down on the ground couldn't escape another slash of their swords.
Not far from her, Caspian groaned, struggling to push himself up from the wreckage. Without thinking, Viella rushed to his side, grasping his arm and hauling him to his feet.
"Come on Caspian, we have to get out of here. There's so many of them!" Viella exclaimed in the ruckus.
Despite him being so slender, his weight nearly sent them both tumbling back down, but she braced herself, gripping his arm tight.
"Marie," he gasped, coughing against the smoke. "She's still there."
"I know! We need to get to her! She's unconscious!" Viella replied.
