Chapter 10 - Goodbye

Chapter 10

A trip meant to unlock his potential was now a fight for survival. Grey found himself locked in battle with a Level 3 beast, a creature wielding two elemental attributes, making it a formidable opponent. Limited to only his wind affinity, Grey was at a severe disadvantage.

A sudden whistling sound snapped him back to reality—a shrapnel coated in flames hurtled toward him at an alarming speed.

"Shit! What am I going to do now?" he muttered, his mind racing.

Think, Grey, think! His thoughts spiraled frantically until an idea struck him. Without hesitation, he closed his eyes, ignoring the imminent danger.

Grey concentrated, circulating mana throughout his body and pulling in more from the surrounding environment. The sheer influx of energy caused his core to overload, sending sharp jolts of pain through his body. But he didn't stop.

The sound of the shrapnel slicing through the air grew sharper, closer. His eyes snapped open, and he thrust both hands forward. A sudden burst of pure mana erupted from his palms, colliding with the projectile and sending it flying far away.

Grey collapsed to his knees, gasping for air. His core was nearly depleted.

From an outsider's perspective, it appeared as if he had used wind magic to deflect the attack, but in reality, he had utilized raw mana—a rare technique that required immense focus and a tremendous amount of energy. It was a desperate measure, one that halved a mage's mana pool, which was why it was rarely used.

Just as he was about to catch his breath, the ground beneath him trembled violently.

"Give me a break, damn it!" he shouted in frustration.

The earth suddenly cracked open, launching him into the air. Before he could react, a blunt rock surged upward, slamming into his body with bone-crushing force and sending him crashing into the ground. The impact shattered the earth beneath him.

"Kuh! Kuh! Kuh!" He coughed violently, struggling to breathe as sharp pain radiated from his chest.

"Damn it... I should've run when I had the chance," he groaned, forcing himself upright despite the pain. The sound of pounding paws echoed through the forest, signaling the beast's relentless pursuit.

If only there was sand here... he thought desperately, eyes scanning his surroundings. Then he spotted it—a jagged piece of shrapnel lying just a few feet away.

Summoning what little mana he had left, Grey extended his hand and twirled his fingers. The shrapnel trembled before slowly lifting into the air and drifting toward him. He caught it tightly, adjusting his weak stance, prepared for the beast's next move.

The massive wolf emerged from the dust, locking eyes with him. Its piercing gaze took in his bleeding face, hands, and nose, then flicked to the makeshift weapon he clutched.

With a soft tap of its paw, the ground propelled the beast forward at blinding speed. Grey braced himself, gripping the shrapnel as the wolf opened its mouth wide. A long stream of fire erupted toward him.

I only have enough for one last defense.

Weaving his hands through the air, Grey swiftly performed the seals for his wind spell.

"Aerius!"

A massive gust of wind burst from his palms, surging forward with greater force than before, extinguishing the flames entirely.

What? Did my wind powers just grow stronger? Confusion flashed through his mind. But there was no time to dwell on it.

Unbeknownst to him, his repeated use of wind magic throughout the battle had strengthened his affinity, allowing him to generate more powerful spells. Yet, all of that would mean nothing if he didn't escape this alive.

The wolf, undeterred, closed in. With no other options, Grey held his weapon high, ready to counter. A sharp rock shard shot toward him, but he swung the shrapnel, deflecting it midair.

The beast was now mere inches away.

Gritting his teeth, Grey lunged forward and drove the shrapnel deep into the creature's side, forcing it back slightly. Drawing upon his remaining mana, he conjured a gust of wind to propel himself forward. With precision, he thrust the jagged metal straight into the beast's eye.

A deafening howl of agony echoed through the forest as the wolf twisted its head frantically, blinded and disoriented.

Grey staggered back, raising both hands. This was his last chance.

"Goodbye! Aerius!"

With the last of his strength, he unleashed one final burst of wind. The powerful gust struck the embedded shrapnel, driving it further into the wolf's skull. The jagged tip burst through the back of its head.

The beast trembled, swayed unsteadily, then collapsed with a resounding thud.

Grey fell to the ground beside it, utterly drained.

Darkness crept at the edges of his vision as exhaustion took hold. His battle was over—but at what cost?
